martone, most people who sign up to a L1 course don't arrive on day 1 at the standard to pass it. Those that do pass will be the ones who have the skill, when asked by the trainer to do something differently, to do it the way they're asked, and then carry on doing it that way for the rest of the week. So it's less about how good is your skiing, and more about how good you are at learning and adapting as necessary. If you have experience in teaching (in whatever context) or just standing in front of people talking, that will help too.
If you wanted some reassurance in advance, you could phone up the snow dome and explain you're thinking of doing an L1 and book a private lesson with one of the more senior instructors. They will be able to give you a lot better idea than we can about whether you're at the right standard.
L1 is not too hard though. It seems to be designed to be the first rung on the ladder and the trainers will be working hard to get you up to the pass level rather than trying to catch you out or fail you.

martone, Hemel run "ski academy" classes specifically for clients considering doing the L1. It's a good way of getting feedback and meeting likeminded individuals. See if CF or any other domes within a manageable distance offer anything similar or follow kieranm's advice and ask very specifically for an instructor who can give you a good pre-assessment.
