Ski Boots for Wide Feet

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

The problem I have is that I have wide and or sensitive feet. With most boots that are the right length (28.5) they bite on the sides and after about 10 mins the pain is such that I need to undo the straps, etc.

Just been to Snow and Rock and they recommended Technica Vento 8's. Unfortunately they didn't have any in stock so I tried on the Technica model up and had the same problem, really bad pain after about 5-10 minutes. The shop claimed the Vento 8's are about 2mm wider so may help.

Anyone have any ideas? Are Technica wide boots? any other manufacturers you can recommend?

Thanks
Nick

nicke, welcome to snowHead

always difficult to try and answer a boot question without seeing your feet, the vento is fairly wide, others to look at would be head Edge range, the Atomic B series, it may not only be the width of your feet that is the problem, it may be the way your foot sits that is causing the issues. you will most likely need a custom footbed and some modification of the boot to make them work for you. the best thing to do is avaoid the chain stores and find your nearest specialist fitter, where abouts are you there may be someone close to you that can help or it may involve a bit of a journey

Hi,

I live in St Albans, Herts

The guy at snow & rock seemed pretty knowledgable - are there better specialist fitters? I found profeet on the web, might it be worth checking them out?

To be honest I don't know that I've got particularly wide feet, I've never had any problems with shoes.

I've got a custom fit in another boot and I still get the problem (Head)

Also, whilst I'm a 28.5 would it cause any material issue with my skiing if I went upto a 29 or 29.5? I believe the width also increases with the size?

Thanks
Nick

the fact that you do not get the problem in shoes would say to me that the issue is the way that a ski boot holds your foot. going up a size will not solve the problem the width does increase with size but if your foot is rotating in the boot all it will do is cause more problems

Technica now make wider fitting boots after discovering that the reason they sold only very few in the UK was that they were modelled on narrower Italian feet ! Thus found some good, solid, wider English feet on which to model the boots and now sell a lot more.

nicke, Vento 8: 110mm forefoot in 28, Diablo 105mm. Atomic B-tech:112mm forefoot in 28, Head Edge the same only with wider heel and more volume in mid-foot. Like my ex-collegue, i'd recomend first foot support, to reduce lateral spread and secondaly choice of liner and appropriate deformation of the shell to accomodate forefoot pitch, go see CEM, he's not too far away! Thanks for all the info. I think for the long term solution a visit to CEM is indeed in order.

I understand though that CEM doesn't sell boots so I guess I still need to resource the 'closest' possible.

Unfortunately I've left it to the last minute again and am skiing at Arc 1950 for a week on Saturday - for this trip I may have one final attempt at getting S&Rock to stretch my current head boots a bit further - it's not going to be perfect but I need something ASAP; I want to try and avoid having to hire a pair that are too long so the width is accommodated which may be my only other option given the short timescales.

Thanks
Nick

nicke, I'm sure PG will know who's a good bootman/woman either in 1950 or another Arc. Drop him a PM. If you can't get them right, they can at least try again to stretch them for you rather than renting.

I've been wearing boots that are a size too big - even with comformab'le foamed inners I was getting all sorts of pain. I've now got a pair the right size and for the last 4 days I've had (almost) no pain. Of course my foot is already damaged, so it won't be perfect overnight. This sounds simple but isn't as the make that suits me isn't made any more ... anyway tonight I went to my local super bootfitter to have the new boots custom foam injected - wow! wonderful. I'm now slightly disappointed that I have a day off tomorrow!!!

Get the right size, the right boot, and get it properly fitted with proper insoles.

Get thee to Profeet (profeet.co.uk) I had years of being openly laughed at in boot shops, hollow "if they dont feel fab we will refund you" guarantees, vicious foot pain with the total loss of confidence that that entails etc, then I went to Profeet in Fulham, was sold a pair of Head Edge 10.8 boots, which they fitted (took 2 hours +) but I went skiing and at last skied with a total absence of pain. Could not recommend them more highly. For anyone, I have to say don't buy boots in resort if you are only going for a week or 2 - if you buy them here, you KNOW where to find them if you have any gripes! 3 pairs of duff overpriced boots later has proven this point to me!

To be fair. as it was St. Albans S & R, you probably saw Martin (young tall guy) He knows his stuff, one of the good guys. If he couldn't sort you out, go to CEM in Bicester.

Nicke, i couldn't sympathise more. I've spent years getting to lunch time in tears of pain. Missing the last couple of runs of the day just because my feet are too wide for any make of ski boot.
Through recommendation i went up to see CEM in Bicester. It was a revelation.
After being told i had a very individually shaped pair of feet. In fact i was given the dubious accolade of having the strangest feet he had ever seen!! The lady in the ski shop agreed!!
With CEM's help, advice and expertise, i now have a custom fitted pair of ski boots that i can wear all day!!! i don't miss the last runs, and i don't have the unbearable pain.
The work he put in was unbelievable. there was not an area of the boot that he didn't push out in some way. You'd never get that without seeing a boot fitter.
Of course you have to be up for rethinking the feel of wearing boots. If you've got wide feet chances are you've bought boots too big, then over tighten to try and secure your foot, hence the unbearable squeeze.
CEM makes sure you have a boot that fits your foot then accomodates your individual anomalies.
The overal sensation of wearing a boot is transformed, when a boot fits your foot, it does it's job without the need for over tightening.
I'm sure this is stating the bleeding obvious to most, but with wide feet and off the peg boots it's a constant compromise, with pain as a consequence.
I've had two trips in my new boots, and they've transformed my skiing holidays. So long as i remember not to over tighten (years of bad habits) i ski all day with no pain.

I believe Rossignol did a bit of a world tour of feet so to speak and have now released a variety of new boots that are MUCH wider than the old boots. When I remember what they are called i'll let you know.

The other thing that has really helped my hubby and me are the heated boot elements that you can have fitted. Some of the pain my husband thought was from tight boots was actually from the cold.

I've broken one of my toes and it really plays up in the cold, so much so that I can usually only ski for a few hours. With the heated boots I can ski all day and my toes doesn't give me grief any more!!

I also have wide 28.5 feet. I'm running Head Edge 9.8's which are pretty comfortable. How do you 'boot' guys rate this boot. I've just bought a pair of Supershape Magnums, I'm toying with the idea of up-rating the boots to match?

I too have 28.5 feet and pretty wide forefoot. Also flat footed which makes them seem even wider. Anyway, just been fitted with a pair of Salomon Falcon CS, with the custom mouldable shell. Along with a decent pair of custom footbeds I couldn't be happier. I'm a full shell size down on my previous Salomons and they're even more comfortable.

Yes, CS Pro is £325. Stiffer flex, more racey version. I tried a few boots from Rossignol, Atomic and some of the other Salomon models as suggested by the boot fitter. But the Falcon fitted best out of the box and the flex felt super smooth compared to all of the others. None of the creaking and groaning you get from some boots. Now had 10 days on them and not a single thing to complain about. I'm seriously impressed with both the boots and the fitter.

Hi ,
My problem is the same as nicke but wide feet in snowboard boots.
I have no confidence in the snowboard shops after footbeds in Italy, states,st anton, also about 10 boots or so.I ride in hard and soft boots depending on brd/conds set up
I really would like to appeal to someone on here for further help as I am making a effort this year, too sort this after 13 seasons of pain.
I don,t think much of the snowboard marketing/selling as it goes,it seems aimed at kids and park about 95%. .
Figuring out how to buy a soft snow board boot using a measuring tape, width seems to be at least 110mm,but I am sure it gets bigger/wider with hard riding.
I found it interesting reading boot fitters posts on ski boot width.

Once I get some base info I can then think about footbeds. As after fit and ride time with 3x sets of footbeds I pulled every set as it was less pain without them, complete waste of time.

I have always suffered with ski boots and tried loads for half a day only to end up in loads of pain then past year my ancient Salomons gave up completely and fell apart. I hired some duff looking Atomics but they were a revelation and fitted really well. Try Atomic for width

I know your pain guys - have exactly the same problem. Similar to neilmoss, had Salomons, that were agonising, I couldn't wait to get them off and often my left foot would be numb. Last year I hired boots - whilst measuring my feet the fitter was sure I was wearing two pairs of socks - I had to say twice that I was only wearing one pair - and these were thin ski socks!!! I got fitted with Dalbello boots - most comfortable boot I've ever worn. Dalbello's will be top of my list when I buy my next pair of boots. snowHead

Having problem feet I wasn't hopeful of finding ski boots to fit my wide foot. Even shoes were/are a problem.
I saw the Atomic LiveFits and shortlisted them at EB's.
Tried a couple of other makes but held out for the Atomics and very glad I did. The fit perfect so much so, with the fitting being carried out correctly I was a few sizes smaller in ski boots than in shoes.
