Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Weight forward: backpack on front

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
As I was commuting into work this morning (running with rucksack on my back) I was thinking about fore-aft weight distribution. Its generally recognised that a sack on the back whilst skiing makes it harder for the skier to maintain correct fore-aft balance and I was reminded of what we often do if we have to carry more than one sack whilst running in the mountains: we put it on our front.

Have any of you instructors tried putting a rucksack on a student's front as an aid for getting their weight forward - to help them feel what its like and how the skis react when the weight is balanced in this way. To feel the difference from being in the back seat?

Gonna veto that one i think, nice idea for sure, but apart from there being easier ways to get weight forward, the student will almost certainly compensate resulting in them just being in the middle again and then as soon as i take it away they'll be on their heels... my 2 cents

dulcamara, thats fair enough however it could also provide a breakthrough (an "ahhh") so that the student gets an insight into a) how it feels to have the weight forward, b) how things behave differently when you do.

Its not to say that just because they've experienced it that its fixed for good, however they now have an insight into what it feels like to be there and what happens, how the skis behave differently (the output) when you are. Thats obviously not the same as knowing "how" to do it without the aid, which I think is your point.

Quite often we can get stuck talking about the "how" to do something and this works for some learners, however others need to understand how it "feels" (the kinesthetics amoungst us) and the "why" - sometimes intellectually understanding the why isn't sufficient we need to experience it.

I know for my part I learn best if I understand the fundamentals of something as it means I don't need to learn anything by rote.

Anyway, just a thought.

just fix a bungeee cord to the ski tips and the skiers shoulders, adjust to encourage forward weighting and bobs your uncle. But slightly more seriously why not something technical that assesses the weight distribution and turns a light green, overly complicated for sure.

The bungee needs to link the ski tips to the scrotum; weight never moves backwards again.

Trust me on this.

This. It would make things worse ie back bottom out squat.

I don't carry a big or heavy backpack but I don't feel it pulls my weight back. The simple exercise done years ago with easiski is pretty effective - traverse, jumping the back of the skis off the ground. Then when you've cracked that, jump front and backs up alternately. Can repeat same on boring drag lifts - which also keeps you warm in cold weather.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

spyderjon, I was interpreting the following:

"..It is recommended that you ski without a rucksack to reach your best performance levels" which is an extract from a BASI course prep notes (see http://www.icesi.org/pdf/BASI_Level_1_Instructor_More_About_the_Course_July_2011.pdf)

abd, there's a bit of a difference between "maintaining correct fore-aft balance" and "reaching your best performance levels" on a BASI course! And there are backpacks and backpacks. Most off-piste skiers will be carrying packs and I see many (and we have plenty of videos here on Snowheads) of skier with backpacks showing admirable fore-aft balance.

Admittedly a backpack filled with assorted tourist crap like a camera, spare camera, scarf , spare scarf , extra layer, spare coat, bottle of coke, crushed baguette, hat, spare hat, spare googles , change of sunnies, phone charger, spare batteries for camera, 3 walkie-talkies, 4 Dairy Milks and a leftover bag of Walkers Prawn Cocktail might not help the average beginner get to grips with a nice stacked stance.

Whilst I agree that this whole backpack idea isn't the best, some people could definitely do with more bend at the waist, and it's essential for really high angles.
