Have just been on phone to Ryanair chargeable recorded message for 6 minutes and then it decided it was sooo busy that I should call back later. Fume.
Perhaps an experienced person can assist please. Off to Grenoble from Liverpool end of March - self, partner and daughter (teenager=lots of stuff). Daugher and I have own skis and boots. Have booked 4 checked in bags (one each plus a boot bag with both of our boots in) which will all fit into the luggage allowance weight, and ALSO paid £50 for ski carriage as we have a double bag for 2 pairs of skis and poles. A friend of a friend has now told me that if you take 2 pairs of skis , even in one ski bag, you have to pay for 2 x ski packs = £100.???? tried to ring the airline but waste of time. Please help, as I each time I ring them I am slowly losing the will to live..

fificat, never flown from liverpool but have with Ryanair from other UK airports and virtually always have 2 pairs of skis in one bag. Never been an issue so far, hoping not to tempt fate  .

Well I have heard that at some airports, airline check in staff may ask to look in the bag if they are suspicious.
Pity not all airports are like Innsbruck, where you can check in your skis before you go to the main check in, so the airline check in staff never even see the bag, just the sticker.

Thanks y'all so far.
I've now read the small print in the booking conditions, and the teeny tiny even smaller print. In fact I'm surprised that there isn't a stipulation that for my £50 hard earned cash spent on the ski luggage section, you can take ONE Ski ( and one ski only). So I'll take everyone's advice and put the two pairs together together (and more). Now, what else can I worry about for the next month???

So is the price for Ski luggage (a bag) £50?? It's weird because I was told it's 15.50 one way so it makes £31 return. Any ideas?

Funnily enough I spoke to them about 20 minutes ago to add some ski carriage - £30 per leg when booked added to an existing booking over the phone.

Yes, it seems basic cost has gone up to £25 per flight or £30 if booked on at the airport. Looks like they are trying to price themselves out of the ski market.

I tried this with Easyjet, they weighed the ski bag, so weight of 2 pairs of skis + my ski bag was over 32kg so they tried to charge me extra....
I like the idea suggested in another thread of keeping a mate to one side with 2nd pair of skis and adding them into the bag once bag has been tagged on it's way to the outsize luggage drop off

I've doubled up skis dozens of times on EasyJet and Ryan air and never had a problem.
kitenski, surely the 32kg is just for the sporting equipment (ie: the skis) and doesn't include your 20kg allowance for 1 booked bag .. or do you mean the 2 skis in 1 bag was over 32kg ?? .. if so you've got some heavy skis !!

Allowance seems to have gone up to 50kg total when taking skis with Easyjet - see their baggage allowance.

achilles, I don't think your interpretation is correct. My take on this is that you can take 20kg as basic hold allowance in up to 8 bags as long as you pay the 'per bag fee'. Paying the extra for sporting goods specifically increases your allowance to a total of 32kg, and you are allowed one additional item to cater for this. The 50kg limit is an overall one for a single passenger regardless of how that is made up, i.e. an absolute upper limit.
In the case of paid hold bag plus paid skis EJ is giving themselves the right to charge excess baggage on the element of your overall baggage above 32kg, and if you are over 50kg then to refuse to carry some (or all?) of your baggage.
However, it's not at all clear and the various conditions are not revealed in a logical order. You have to read it all then kind of assemble the jigsaw yourself.

50kg is is the absolute maximum permitted - but you'd have to pay for overweight baggage over the 32kg. It isn't stated very clearly.
Also Ryanair basic bag is 15kg, not 20kg, unless they changed it in the last month or so.

To show how different each airline is, here is the Jet2 version. I'm flying with them on Saturday so have been reading their baggage T&C carefully.
If you pay for a hold bag(s) then 20kg, but no single bag over 25kg allowed.
If you pay for additional sporting goods then this can be up to 20kg, one bag/item up to 6ft by 3ft in size.
Excess baggge charges payable at £6/kg for exceeding these limits.
Absolutely nothing is said about single pair of skis only etc., so I should be perfectly OK taking our double ski bag with hers and my skis in it at 16kg all up. Not a bad deal compared to some of the other carriers.

Nope! With Easyjet the £15 per way allows you to have a total 32kg, so for me, one ski bag inc boots at 20kg, and a double ski bag at 14kg took me over the limit 
I since worked out the bag itself was 5kg, last weekend I got my main luggage down to 14kg, so would have been ok with the double ski bag....

Easyjet's online booking form for adding skis on a flight only had 2 options -
0 pair(s) of skis
1 pair(s) of skis
so I'd be interested to see how they'd charge you for a 2nd pair in a bag (weight issues aside)

Ryanair is set to increase its already expensive charges for hold luggage, with an estimated £25-£35 per bag per flight in peak season (June to September) and £15-£20 in the remainder of the year.
Mr O'Leary, the airline's chief executive, says that charges should be higher at peak times as that's when travellers are likely to have more bags. He continued to say that prices would go up until there were no more hold bags, and that reducing the proportion of passengers who checked in bags from around 80% to 19% has saved the company lots of money.

At Liverpool airport the check in desk is manned by Ryanair, the excess baggage desk is manned by the airport. Many airlines, easyjet and Ryanair have a max weight limit of main bag plus ski bag. I had to pay extra on easyjet because my 2 pairs of skis in hard abs case weighed more than 12 kg (hold bag was already maxed out at 20 kg) I avoided problem on my way home by reducing weight of the main hold bag (transfer stuff into cabin bags) I fly Ryanair several times a year and many other airlines too. Never had any problems ( unlike Emirates Business Class)

Just be careful if putting more than one pair of skis in a bag. If your baggage is lost or damaged and you try to make a claim, they could use the one ski per bag rule against you and only pay out for one.
