Apparently terrible flooding in the French Pyrenees resort of Bareges. Hope In Garbure We Trust and Emma (MountainBug?) are OK.

Hi rob. That name rings a bell - it has an interesting history in terms of avalanches, documented in the mid-1800s. Have never been there. Would be interesting to know more of the age of the town and when it's been hit by natural disasters.

They are all fine and have been evacuated from
Bareges. The valley has suffered serious damage
and many people have lost homes and business. There have
been 2 deaths which is a miracle considering.

Didn't they also have huge and problematical amounts of snow, too, which led to evacuations? They must wonder what's coming next.

Yes we ve had huge snow falls this winter which is now causing
the higher than normal river levels. There is no access to
Bareges as the road had washed away in several places.
The army have arrived and are currently diverting the river
back to its original course to prevent further damage. The
Problem is also made worse as they are releasing water from
the various dams high up. It resembles something from
a Spielberg film-devastating!

Settlement patterns are going to have to be re-thought in some areas (it's already happening in Italy where some very vulnerable settlements have been forcibly evacuated).
Those pictures are horrendous.

pam w, I agree. Looking at the pictures from Vielha in the video above it's noticeable that the 'old town' is much higher up above the river than the new building. Same goes from some other the other Villages in the valley, although in Arties it looks like some of the old village has been flooded.

Pyrenees update: water levels have reduced and there is a
massive mobilasation of volunteers, pompiers, securite civil
etc. The clean up and repair is progressing well with services
restored to most areas. Bareges is still cut off by road but the
rest of the valley is accessible and open.
Next step is to save the summer season as best a possible
for local business.
More digging out houses tomorrow, I have never witnessed such
sense of community spirit and team work.
