Poster: A snowHead
|
The organising committee of the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics - TOROC - claim that the Games will have no net impact on climate change. TOROC is to invest in tree planting, energy efficiency and renewables to offset its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
Other environmental measures include improving the energy efficiency of snowmaking systems and special measures to deal with sewage treatment.
This report from Reuters.
Any comments on these measures?
One point which seems relevant is the CO2 emitted by spectators and athletes flying or driving to the Games, which is presumably not being measured - though this is essentially the responsibility of those travelling or providing transport, rather than the organisers' responsibility.

I would have thought that the addition the possible change they make to climate change will be so tiny as to be completely insignificant.... so I see this as nothing mroe than an attempt for positive publicity..... guess they have to get it somehow!

This report from Noticias.info explains that the organisers of the Turin Winter Olympics are working with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to execute their environmental policy. The UNEP is also working with the organisers of the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
