Well it's cooled down from summer now and we've just got the first proper snowfall today so I guess the next season is slowly getting underway.

Actually I lie, on my walk into work this morning Esja the mountain range that is ever present on the Reykjavik skyline is covered in a light layer of snow down to about 600m. It's also hellaciously windy.

meh, excellent. Some areas filling in already. I'd happily ski cover as thin as that, especially this early in the season.

Blimey! Practically down to sea level, it must be very cold up there at the minute. How unusual is snow mid Spetember in Iceland. Thursday will be very wild up there with the tail end of the hurricane sweeping over the island!!!

Just watching the devastation on the news now, digging up buried sheep dead and alive. There is a fair amount of snow up north!

Still snowing oop north, particularly if you check out the webcam linked just above and can see snow on the tops in the distance from my office window. Will take a drive out this weekend and see how stuff is shaping up.

I'm off on my honeymoon to iceland on the 30th. Is there any chance of lift served skiing anywhere in the counry if it belts it down with snow?

mr_big_ad, no hope yet sorry.
It's about to pelt down with snow up north though but I doubt it will be enough to get the lifts open unless they start snowmaking but most of the mountains above 1000m have snowy tops.

meh: Mrs MA & I are always on the lookout for new places to ski and ski tour.....
We're easily pleased and have skied the likes of tiny (one lift) areas in Poland. Should we be adding Iceland to our list? How extensive are the ski areas (vertical/kms of piste) and are ski guides readily available for touring purposes (and if so, are they reasonably priced)?
Cheers.

mountainaddict, of course you should. Iceland has a loooooooot of mountains and gets a fair bit of snow. There are a couple of small ski areas near Reykjavik which only have a tiny amount of vertical but quite a few lifts. The best is Hlíðarfjall up north which is also in the best area for touring, if you check this link you'll see it's sunny and there is fresh snow down to sea level right now:
http://www.hlidarfjall.is/is/vefmyndavelar
Still needs a bit more base at the moment!
Guiding wise I'd recommend these guys:

All the snow is on the wrong side of the country! Which is okay because it's starting to get cold enough to snow here and isn't completely stormy. Will be driving up north to see whats what in a couple of weeks.

meh, Thinking of heading over in early April with >these guys< around the Fjords of the NW peninsular.
Haven't made my mind up, but will need to do so shortly so any views on the area/timing would be most welcome. Thanks, Geoff

You'll be fine at that time of year and the area is awesome, some of the more remote bits of Iceland that are a bitch to get to in winter by land. If you're stopping in Reykjavik at all give me a shout.

Pretty much the best season start in years, sadly all of it up North at the moment. If you look at the webcam images above it's pure white down to sea level. Here's come photos from the Arctic Heli-Ski guys:

Sadly the Game of Thrones guys are taking up all the hotel space otherwise I'd be up there this weekend! Am booked in up there the weekend after though.
They're also snow making at the nearby ski area so hopefully it won't be too long until I can get my mid-week after work night skiing going.
