carvers, twin tips, powder skis. Is there one ski that stands out which is suitable for someone (like me) who wants a bit of everything. Well aware that a range of uses means some compromises on performance, I would be keen to hear what you lads and lasses recommend. 
used a pair of x-scream this year and thought they were a fine a pair of skis.

I use a pair of Head Mad Trix Mojos. great for powder, ca. 90mm underfoot but carve surprisingly well on the groomers.

I love my Salomon Scream 8s. They're great for dabbling in a bit of powder and work perfectly well on piste. If you read the equipment thread 1080s are also highly recommended, but I've never tried them.

I've skied my Nordica Beast 74s (said to be a ski in the 1080 mould) in a variety of conditions and found them very good, except for the extremes: icy runs and more than knee-deep powder, for which they are only ok. I don't race.
Don't know if that tells me I should stick with them or buy a pair of slaloms and one of fatties.

K2 Axis XP would be quite good, although it is more weighted to off piste than on.
I have a pair of Axis X Pros which are good all mountain, but not for the terrain park, which I'm looking to sell.
I was told once that the definition of an all-mountain ski is one that doesn't do particularly well on any part of the mountain!

As for 'all-mountain' skis, the claim has been made ever since I began getting interested in ski hardware in the early '70s. There's no adequate common denominator between powder flotation and ice carving performance. Wear The Fox Hat's second 'paragraph' should therefore not have an exclamation mark, since it is scientific fact.

I ski Volkl Vertigo Motion which seem to handle everything i can apart from really deep stuff. They are billed as being an "All-Mountain" ski and they "seem to" react equally as well on groomers as they do thru the trees.

Bought 1080's at the beginning of the season and they're pretty good in everything, except best to keep the edges sharp as they're a bit ropey on hard stuff. I'd definitely recommend them, although I thought last seasons Xmax were a brilliant all round ski. Didn't like this season's so much when I tried them.
I'm still not convinced of the need for really fat skis though. The Voilkl six star supersports I tried were fine on everything, including powder, and if I was buying now I'd seriously consider these. Unless you want to fly over the top of everything in big carve turns I'm not sure what else fatter skis offer (other than making powder easier generally).

I think it depends on your weight. I'm 85Kg & 183cm. I found Scream 10s too soft on piste, but great in the powder, so I tried last years (softer) Crossmax 10's and find they give me the best compromise. Others in our group prefer the screams, but they are all little light guys.
The SX-9s I found unstable at speed but that could be a function of the length I tried

Thanks for the all the tips. it's as i feared, a big choice. appreciate the comments. Guess all I need now is to persuade the better half to have another ski holiday, try out some of those mentioned above and then look in the spring sales.
I take it that try before you buy is always good idea?

i'd agree with Martin, it has a big deal to do with how much you weigh, or how much force you can excert on the ski during the turn. I found the Screams too "chattery" in high speed turns, but i'm quite a big guy 90KG. Try before you buy is always a good option if you can manage it.

try before you buy I'd say is essential. Also make sure you give yourself enough time to get used to the ski - it takes a little while to adjust the way you ski to get the most from the new ski you're on. The 1080s I bought I didn't like to start with - too short, too small a radius and too soft - but once I got used to them I realised they were great fun!!

Stuart - Banana skis with bloody bright bottle green boots is kind of hard to miss ... it kind of makes you stand out as you ski down under a chair lift and you just know half the people on the lift are praying for you to wipe out as obviously I'm a poseur!
Right enough the SX-9's are pretty loud ... shows you how aware of the 1080's I am!!!

hence the reason I'm not convinced that owning skis works anymore. Best to hire based on what skiing you are going to be doing the next day. Thus you can change day by day based on the weather, the pow and who you are skiing with
