MoodyFFS, generally no, because the operation of the access lifts often determine whether skiing is possible. However SW is the worst direction for affecting CairnGorm - looks like it's down to just the Carpark Tow and Ptarmigan Tow at the moment on CairnGorm with the wind picking up. Glencoe can get away with strong SW winds, but small changes in direction can nullify the shelter the bulk of the mountain offers, at Nevis Range the gondola is particularly susceptible to SW gales. Lecht and parts of Glenshee have more shelter, when quiet such as mid-week the Pomas can run in higher wind speeds before problems start!

Can anyone help me out here, possibly thinking of getting a lesson whilst up at Cairngorm. I will have my skis etc hired anyway so the lessons will be £62 which includes the lift pass. It also says that if there is less that 4 people, and im sure there will be when im going that they will run it as a private lesson and it will last for 2 hours. Would the lift pass still continue to run for the whole of that day or would the take it off me at the end of the lesson and then have to buy a half day ticket for the afternoon after my lesson? If they allowed me to keep it this is a great price as the day ticket is £30 on its own! Cheers.

Ricklovesthepowder, yup you'll get a day pass as part of the package.
1873Chris, hopefully this'll be the case - some forecast for Cairngorm too but last time I looked it was silly amounts in the west
Beware though, it'll be very stormy through next week and into next weekend so however much falls I suspect there will be little chance to enjoy until the week after and fingers crossed it's snow and not rain!

GFS charts look off the scale precipitation wise, but also fairly warm....
MWIS says
Planning Outlook for all mountain areas from Tuesday, 1st February, 2011
A complete change in the weather pattern for the coming week or more. Frequent upland gales, for periods storm force or above, especially across Scotland. Precipitation will be frequent on all mountain areas, but focussed across western Scotland. Temperatures will vary rapidly, with a series of freeze thaw cycles on all higher areas, the freeze cycles most long lasting over Highland Scotland, where on western mountains there will be periods of considerable very heavy snowfall - but also one or two periods of considerable thaw. Forecast issued from Glenmore Lodge

What part of frequent upland gales don't you understand
Snow + heavy rain, be interesting to see what the hills look like a week today...

Agreed.
Scotland is going to get big rain from valley to summit for most of the next week.

That's not entirely clear yet to be honest.
To get this in perspective guys it's worth emphasising that MWIS is saying the west highlands will be getting most of the rain (and snow) rather than the east, I think it's also worth quoting the usually pretty reliable Winterhighland outlook at length (hope you don't mind Alan):
Quote: |
Mountain Weather Outlook
Monday should stay largely dry in the East, the best chance of some brightness in the NE Cairngorms. A deepening low pressure (at 965mb midday SW of Iceland), will see Severe Gale strengthen with gusts to 80mph which will restrict lift served snowsports - the Lecht should have a degree of shelter. Snow showers in the West will turn to rain as the FL rises to 4500ft. Around 0°c expected mid-day in the Cairngorms, rising later.
Overnight a double cold front is forecast to sweep in, as it progresses the precipitation will change back to snow on the mountains before clearing to snow showers as the FL falls back.
On Tuesday the snow showers should reach all parts, falling as snow to or below the lower slopes, but will be most frequent in the West where they will give spells of whiteout conditions. Some sunny spells in the Cairngorms, but visibility reduced by blowing snow. At Munro Level -1°c in the Cairngorms, falling later and -2°c in the West Highlands. Westerly 40 gusting 80mph, but perhaps slightly less in the Southern Cairngorms.
Overnight into early hours of Wednesday a warm sector will raise the FL above the tops once again, precipitation turning to rain at all levels, heavy in the West but lighter and possibly fairly patchy in the Cairngorms, esp towards the NE.
During Wednesday a cold front will move Eastwards and as it does so frontal rain will turn to snow on the hills before clearing from the West, leaving the West with snow showers on the hills, while the Eastern ranges might just stay dry. Even windier with Storm or Violent Storm Force South Westerlies in the region of 60mph gusting to or over 100mph. FL around 4000ft in the East falling later, around 3000ft in the West.
Beyond Wednesday the models and forecast ensemble members diverge on timing and there is greater uncertainty about the track of the low pressures. This will have a significant effect on the proportion of rain to snow, esp on Friday.
Early indications are for Snow Showers to or below 1000ft on Thursday, with Storm Force Westerlies. Showers most frequent to the West, some bright or sunny spells a possibility in the East.
It looks highly probable that Friday will be a very stormy day, but it's still not clear if the Central Highlands will fall in the warm sector or whether it will pass South. Snow to rain, then rain to snow if we get the warm sector, if the triple point passes just South of the Central Highlands, somewhere might get a big dump!
Violent Storm Force SW winds likely to increase to Hurricane Force 12 has stronger model support than whether the ski areas get rain or snow on Friday, in the region of 80 to 90mph gusting in excess of 120mph, Cairngorms Plateau and other exposed ridge lines, summits and downslopes. |
So increasingly stormy but uncertain towards the end of the week with the west bearing the brunt of the precipitiataion as well as the freeze/thaw.
All ultimately in the lap of the gods but, as others have said, it will be 'interesting' to see what things are like in a weeks time and whether we have a net gain or loss of cover in the various ski areas!
What is pretty sure if I'm reading things right though is that next week it's not going to be a great idea heading into the Scottish mountains and at the moment Friday in particular is looking like a bit of nailbiter for all the ski areas!

Quick snow report from Glenshee from Sunday 30th. Sorry, not sure of the run names.
Little wind when I arrived in the morning. Generally overcast with the summits shrouded in mist.
Started on Sunnyside.
Some runs had pretty decent cover considering the surrounding mountains were almost devoid of snow.
However alot had alot of patchy ice.
The 2 best that I found were the Blue run down from Meall Odhar
and the green run back to the car park from the top of Sunnyside Poma/Tom Dearg Poma.
Went up to the top of Glas Maol. But at the time, cloud cover had come down and visibility was very low (at best!).
But as the day went on, it cleared up and even saw the sunshine... occasionally!
The run itself had a layer of fresh snow but as was the case withmost runs, some ice.
After lunch, tried the Cairnwell side briefly. The Cairnwell chairlift and runs to the side were closed.
Conditions definitely not as good as sunnyside due to more ice.
So headed back over to Sunnyside pretty quick.
So in summary, ice patches on most runs. Anything off the pisted areas really not enough snow to venture onto.
Guy in ski hire place said they were expecting flurries of snow this week, with a larger amount due Thursday.

By most accounts, that sounds about the same as everywhere else in Europe at the moment.

Ricklovesthepowder, personally I won't get excited about any snow that arrives this week as nobody'll get a chance to ski it and it'll be slurrified by a couple of inches of rain at the end. It's what we get from then on that could make for some epic conditions as the wind turns WNW'ly and we get on the cooler side for a while. The GFS 12Z was an absolute belter in that respect ...

moffatross, you fancy a ski 9th, 10th 11th either at Cairngorm or nevis? What do you think the conditions will be like up there this time next week?

moffatross, Ricklovesthepowder, I think Friday will be the interesting day to see what damage is done by the rain, then after that what benefit is bought on if/when the colder weather arrives.....

Ricklovesthepowder, like kitenski said, it's pure guesswork at the moment but if the goods are delivered I might well be able to sneak one of those days off work & it would be great to meet for some turns. You've got to appreciate that driving past Glencoe to head to Nevis is particularly heartwrenching though

moffatross, haha. I am staying near crubenmore lodge/newtonmore about 20 miles south of Aviemore so Glencoe is a bit far really. Cairngorm is 20 mins away and Nevis 60 which is more than do able, but to get to Glencoe it is nearly 2 hours. Lets see how the weather goes etc and keep in touch. Oh, and cross everything you can that this weather system dumps snow, not rain!

Cheers Ross, aye, reckon they got a good old foot massage, still though shows nicely how bombproof the base is over there, and somewhat gives perspective to the snow cover, comments like there's nothing off-piste is just plain wrong - depends on what you mean by off piste though.
Looking at that - roll on some spring tours (fairweather tourer me - cant be doing with low vis or variable surface, gimme sunshine and spring snow every time!).
Thems the dudes for some guiding, bc instruction if anyone is after that when up these parts (they do rafting, kayaking in the summer too - there are worse ways to earn a living i suppose!!)
