^ blimey, lets hope your next trip is a bit more successful!
Im sure it wont be that bad lol. When i got back to our hotel the receptionist passed me a piece of paper with a phone number on and asked me to give this woman a ring who was a reporter. So i rang her up and she was from a newspaper called the "Herald and Journal"??? she was asking me what it was like up there etc and the next day my whole interview was on the front page and also on page 3 of the newspaper, i have a copy of it as well, so yes, an event i will never forget!!!

^ Strathspey and Badenoch Herald?
Sounds pretty momentus what with being interviewed about it - must have been wild even by Scottish standards!
Winterhighland, very glad someone caught the view of the half frozen Loch Morlich, forgot to stop and get a pic of that
I think the Loch is still fully frozen, but water has got on top of the ice at the Eastern end following the thaw and stormy winds, the ice shifted too cause there is a heap of it stranded on the beach now the Loch has fallen back again.

roga, it is the press and journal, just looked at the newspaper.
barry, the date was 6th jan 2008 i think. Everyone was in the car park and the snow plough would go down with 3 cars behind it at a time, any more and the snow got to thick to drive in. When waiting in the top car park there was someone from the ski centre going around telling everyone What was happening and he was freezing, I ended up giving him my neckwarmer to stay warm, it was pretty serious to be fair!
I was asked for some Scottish music, a set of Irish tunes will have to suffice from Youtube! First tune is 'The Rolling Wave' a trad tune that features in more upbeat version in the set 'Between the Strings' by Calico on the album Celanova Square. A fantastic album for anyone who likes Celtic folk music.

roga, thanks for that, makes it a lot clearer!!! I have been to cairngorm once for about 30 minutes before we got evacuated, yes evacuated lol! i got the train to the top, stepped outside into what i can only describe as a sheer whiteout and horrendously cold temps. i skied about 40 metres then got to a poma i think then the lift attendants we going mad and urging everyone to get inside asap and to get down the mountain. The wind was filling in the train track and the access road was being blown in with snow and wind, it was a pretty bad experience to say the least, one i will never forget though! The only bit of the road i can remember is the Hilton hotel and the bit where the access gates are, the rest i was to busy trying to stay on the road!
I had an identical experience at new year a couple or three seasons back; sirens, 2 minutes on skis, evacuation, car being blown sideways across the Cas car park. Amazing memories too. Very much the exception though so stick with it, it's worth it.

The lovely inversion lifted at lunch today and the cloud came in, but didn't stop me doing just as much skiing as yesterday! I'm quite keen on this 10-lady warm up, it should take just over an hour when the M1 is ski-on and the piste perfect! The lift is just over 4 mins, and the run just over two
Hoping the cloud drops a little fresh and the bashers work hard tonight as some busy areas were a little scraped at the end of the day. Forecast for tomorrow on MWIS is for the cloud to burn away by lunchtime

MoodyFFS, yes, the GFS keeps generating sets of wigglies as near perfect as you could ever hope for.
Half term could be awesomes.

There looks like there could be a fair amount of snow in the cards judging by the gfs run, am I right?
Ricklovesthepowder, certainly the right wigglies for it... but it's still a long way out...

could be rain, could be snow, could be nothing, there is little or no agreement in the models, which means low confidence. Not surprising given it's a fair time away!
Little or no model agreement ? Other than that our high pressure will have collapsed south within a week, a westerly spell will have set in with a series of fronts ambling across Scotland under mean mountain top temperatures several degrees below zero, there will be precipitation on the hills and mountains and a lot of it will be snow.

I was referring to the GFS chart posted a little higher up, and stand by what I say, at the moment, there is little or no agreement in the GFS runs.
Up until 1st feb there is broad agreement for rising temps, after that the models diverge alot.
In fact, check MWIS which says:
Planning Outlook for all mountain areas from Sunday, 30th January, 2011
Sunday will be fine with extensive sunshine and light winds across most mountain areas, but western Scotland will become windy, and areas of low cloud will in some areas penetrate well inland. Windy on most mountain areas for much of next week, with upland gales extensively on the Scottish Highlands. Bands of cloud and rain will come in off the Atlantic, although away from western Scotland, total rainfall will be small

kitenski, I think moffatross is talking about the basic agreement between the different models (GFS, NOGAPS, GEM, NAEFS, etc). Whereas there is quite a divergence between each of the ensemble runs within each model?

I can guarantee there will be fantastic snow in Scotland from 5th February as I go to France then. I've went skiing the first week in March for the last few years and ALWAYS missed amazing snow in Scotland so we decided to book a differnet week this year, obviously that means there will be amazing snow in Scotland 5-12 February and we'll be skiing ice in Serre Chevalier by day while looking at pics of everyone skiing powder at home at night

Though the GFS ensembles still look all over the shot, it's less about the general pattern now and more about the fact that nailing the specific timing of frontal systems as depressions come through isn't possible more than a few days out. However small changes in the detail, alignment of the high, depth and thus trajectory of the lows could have big changes to what's actually experienced on the mountains in Highland Scotland, but there does seem to be growing support for cool if not becoming cold zonality.
Cold Zonality is just about the Holy Grail for the West, it's these big Atlantic Storms piling in which really are the base builders on the West Coast. There will be freeze/thaw cycling, the key is that over each storm cycle there's more depth to the base than at the start, even just a little - so don't get to hung up on the day to day or hour to hour fluctuations in this kinda cool zonal roller coaster !!

The Netweather snowsport forecasts are auto generated every 6 hours from the operational GFS beyond 36 hours (prior to that I think they have NMM input IIRC) so at the range posted above, look for trends and to be honest you'll get a better feel for what's going on by look at the synoptic charts and the changes in them at that range.
A note about the precipitation amounts, where snow is indicated at the base elevation, the figure for precipitation is SNOW DEPTH in mm, not water equivalent depth, thus the 59mm is 5.9cm not 59cm of snow sadly!
Also the Base is the Coire na Ciste carpark, not Daylodge height, so 1800ft vs 2150ft (well about 2100 for the tows).

Cairngorm was indeed excellent today - the recent snow and thorough pisting has made a huge difference. White Lady, Cas, M2 and the top bowls (Ciste Fairway/Bowl and Ptarmigan) were firm and grippy with very little hard snow. M1 has improved significantly and although hard in the middle of the run, there is plenty of snow at the sides to carve cleanly.
The Fiaciall rollers and back in action for the first time this season and the patchwork to fill in the gaps along Burnside is excellent, given the snow loss last week, with a slightly thin run with a few icy patches from the Cas T-Bar station to the Base Station. Home Road, however, is very hard, icy, thin and rocky and I would not recommend it. No need anyway as the Sheiling side is good for everyone, including beginners.
A brilliant day on the hill and fantastic work by the CML staff.
Wow! If that were to come off there would be some serious snowfall up there, 59mm of precipitation on the 8th, how much s is would that out down? Thats the day I arrive in aviemore lol!

Ricklovesthepowder, take a look at the wigglies on the charts posted by moffatross three quarters of the way down this page on the weather thread - looks like potentially silly amounts of precipitation in the west and a good amount in the east - let's hope they verify!
Anyway back to now and the Cairngorm website are reporting a further dusting of fresh on the slopes this morning - it's gonna be a fantastic day!
Must dash, I've gotta teach some people to ski but sadly not at sunny and snowy Cairngorm

I would take the predictions with a large pinch of salt. All season the local, highly experienced Met Office staff have struggle to predict the snowfall so met modelling without a local experience and knowledge input is less likely to be highly accurate. As an example, the model shows no forecast snow today at CGM but it is actually snowing at the moment!
I would suspect that conditions will be fine until well into March, if not beyond.
andytb, looking good. Just one question, you say at 9am you were sent into the ciste car park, is that because the other one was full or do they fill the ciste one up first and then bus you around?
Snow showers on and off intermingled with brighter spells, eventually clearing away to blue skies during the afternoon.

had to bail out today before the clouds cleared and before the ciste gulley and east gulley #1 opened (18month old nipper waiting for a lunchtime walk!)
some prety heavy snow showers in the morning, snow was great. pretty busy up there (top car park must've been full by 9am Ricklovesthepowder, the top fills first, i was there for 7.30am and in the first few rows with the climbers and overnighters). Cas side busiest as usual, white lady and m1 were great, but the pick (in the morning at least) was down the m2 and into the aonach bowl, onto the west wall poma which was dead quiet (making that route the pick!.) Imagine things picked up over there once the gulleys "opened". What was the traverse like anyone?
Another morning sesh tomorrow, hope to get into the ciste earlier (was tempted to make a run for the lecht as it would be less windy but the wind forecast seems to have downgraded a tad)

Looks like the wind is picking up throughout this week... at what kind of wind speeds to they need to shut things down?
Have the opportunity to ski somewhere different on the Saturday, are Glencoe/Nevis any better if the winds are an issue at the 'gorm?
