Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

If the snow is good head to Nevis but if conditions remain as they are then it looks like Cairngorm would be the pick of the bunch.

If the snow is good I'll definitely be at Nevis or Glencoe.

Bluebirrrrddddd, fresh snow everywhere. About an inch or two of really great snow that sat great on the firm base. Amazing. Magical. Superb. Alps eat your heart out that was the best snow I've skied on all season.

Did 10 laps of the White Lady to start the day off, groomed immaculately overnight. Then they sent the bashers over the M1 sidetrack so I caught fresh tracks behind a machine TWICE and caught up each time just before it got to the bottom. Joy joy joy joy joy.

Also with the better vis ventured down the M2 (niiice) and the lower part of the Aonach bowl that had been groomed and pisted - hard but still good for charging on as nobody was going down it Very Happy Very Happy Sofar as ungroomed areas tried out the East Wall of Lady which had soft snow but too thin a base to be comfortable, many rocks were showing. The frozen traverse clearly put everyone off the coronation wall as I had virtually the only runs down there the whole day. It softens right up once you're into Coire Cas but still with some frozen bits poking through to keep you on guard Wink

Still fresh tracks to be had off the Ptarmigan at the end of the day if you wanted to ski to the Ciste rather than the Ptarmigan tow.

Everyone get up here tomorrow, sorry don't, I like the M1 poma more when the biggest queue is a queue of one Cool

Hope you're suitably not-jealous roga Wink

^West Wall Poma & Ciste Fairway, Sat 4th Feb 2006. What can happen when you get a limpet high pressure in January following an early season thaw before an extensive base is established.

If the above was the situation now those panicking would have cause, as it is CairnGorm Mountain remained open into May in 2006 and it also happens that we are ahead of the game compared to 2001, in the case of CairnGorm a long way ahead of where we were at this stage in 2001. Chill out, but think snow. snowHead

Just spotted a photo from today on Winterhighland that gives a virtually identical view to the one above ... but with a wee bit more snow snowHead

Ricklovesthepowder, you're sounding a bit more upbeat than a couple of days ago wink

Whitegold, yeah some great photos but at the moment east is best I believe, with Cairngorm the pick of the bunch - I heard that Nevis was pretty bone shaking today so not much fresh there yet, hopefully more will be along in the west too ... fingers crossed! Toofy Grin

 You know it makes sense.

A reasonable number out on the 'Gorm today (reasonable means enough to be a decent turn out with no threat of queues...) and CairnGorm has been quietly notching up the skier days figure this month, in contrast to last Jan when so many days were lost to the weather. If you can get up on Friday you really should. Glenshee has caught about an inch of fresh now too, but CairnGorm & the Lecht have the best and most consistent surface conditions to play on just now.

I got numerous complaints from managers to directors in various sizes of company last year for mentioning 'sickies', but I see now CML are encouraging it too! For their sake I hope not too many CML staff watch that tonight! Toofy Grin snowHead

MoodyFFS, that's a bit of a complicated question, some places have a full week I think whilst others only have a couple of days, the Highland dates are Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th Feb so the weekend before will likely be busy and then the following weekend it's the start of the English half-term so probs busy too as the weekend after may well be too.

MoodyFFS, most areas of Scotland have a long weekend mid Feb rather than a full half term holiday. Edinburgh City though has the full week. Local to the Ski Areas the schools are on a long weekend including Mon 14th and Tues 15th Feb, but some parts of Highland are off the full week this year - usually it's Fri to Tues.

i am booked in the cottage we have rented from Tues 8th until the morning on Sat 12th we couldnt extend it by an extra night as the owners said that this weekend is the start of the school holidays so i pressume they break up on Friday 11th Feb.

roga, it looks great again now, i always had faith, honest wink

Winterhighland, that top picture of the frozen Loch in the background is stunning, looks very Canadian. In the second picture you say that it is the first picture reversed so looking towards the mountains, to give me a scale and get my bearings etc where abouts is the skiing etc. Cheers.

Fantastic photos - seven days at Cairngorm so far this season and had wind , cloud or bad viz every time , really jealous but so good for the Scottish Ski scene.

Really shows how where the photographs are being taken from can really tell a different story.

Seems to me that it would be worth investing the money in positioning the webcams in better places if it would encourage more people to visit?

Could be some snowy weather on the way in February, but pretty windy too...

Ricklovesthepowder, have a look at the annotated photo below:

If you also take a look at the piste map here you'll be able to work out most of it - remember though, you can only see the Coire Cas side here, the Ciste is in the next Coire (to the left).

Yes that's the line of the funicular, you can just make out the tunnel mouth below the Ptarmigan Restaurant (you can see it very clearly in the larger version of the photo).

It does look Canadian doesn't it - wait until you drive through the forest towards the ski area, if it's clear you'll get some great glimpses through the trees of the snowy peaks above, I love that drive Very Happy

that's just half the lift served area - the infrastructure you can see there is in Coire Cas, the next one over (to lookers left in the photo) is Coire na Ciste, where is home to the top beginners bowls and the lift served steeper stuff further down the Coire into the Ciste Gulley, East and West Walls

I agree but the Cairngorm ones are actually better placed than some of the others, Nevis Range in particular is very poor indeed and shows little but often bare lower slopes rather than the more snow sure upper slopes.

roga, thanks for that, makes it a lot clearer!!! I have been to cairngorm once for about 30 minutes before we got evacuated, yes evacuated lol! i got the train to the top, stepped outside into what i can only describe as a sheer whiteout and horrendously cold temps. i skied about 40 metres then got to a poma i think then the lift attendants we going mad and urging everyone to get inside asap and to get down the mountain. The wind was filling in the train track and the access road was being blown in with snow and wind, it was a pretty bad experience to say the least, one i will never forget though! Smile The only bit of the road i can remember is the Hilton hotel and the bit where the access gates are, the rest i was to busy trying to stay on the road!
