Here in Champery its been sleet/rain in the village since Monday night. However on the positive side, the snow line is just above the village and its been dumping up top for about 12 hours. I have been up teaching all day in knee high powder. Its heavy in places that have been exposed to the high winds, although elsewhere in the lee its fantastic fun! The wind has made some interesting waist high drifts on alot of the tracks which is fun for my mini 5 yr old skiers who cannot see over them! Chavanette (Wall) was a bit wind swept too but was nice to ski all the same! Sorry did not get onto the French side today but heard the vis and wind were similiar!

Very similar in Chatel today - wet at village/bottom lifts but heavy snow further up. good fun but vis was poor. Tomorrow should be awsome!!

What are the general snow conditions like in the PDS at the moment (Chatel in particular)? I have just booked flights to Geneva for 7th March and I'm thinking a return to the PDS would be nice!
Incidently (wrong forum - sorry!) If anyone knows of any catered chalets in Chatel (sunday - sunday 2 people) I'd be interested in hearing about them!

For what it's worth, there's light rain in the valley at the moment and it's very warm - snow level around 1500m or higher. Decent dump forecast to start on Thursday and Swiss radio said at lunchtime that the snow level is forecast to come down to 1000m on Friday. Nice weather is forecast on Saturday which should be a great day. Unfortunately very high winds and very mild temperatures forecast for Saturday night into Sunday which risk making a mess of the new snow, particularly high up. Then looks like its cooling down again with some more snow although any further out than that is poor reliability.

Its likewise raining in the village but snowing hard at 1300m just above the village in Champery. The vis was better on the Swiss side to the French side today. I was over in the Avoriaz Park teaching and the fog was thick on the way over from Mossettes at 10am. Its forecast to be much the same tomorrow with a freezing level rising a little for Thursday and dropping Fri/Sat.

What a difference a week makes.
Very warm temps and strong Fohn winds have trashed the low level snow. Pleney and presumably anywhere else in the area, are looking patchy low down. A brief spell of cold weather will offer some respite this weekend before another prolonged spell of warm southerly winds and freezing levels of about 1600m arrive on Sun. I suspect any pistes below 1400mish, that havn't been cannoned, will become very patchy by next week. Once that base has gone, it wont be coming back. It's amazing how quickly a little warm weather can cause such damage.
Looking on the bright side, my drive is clear of snow, hopefully for the rest of the season........oh, and the snow above 1500m is pretty good.

I'm sure you're right about it getting cold again (not sure about clearing my drive today though, I'll let Sundays rain do that). However, we both know that once the base has gone, whether on the lower slopes or in my garden, any snow that falls at this stage of the season isn't going to hang around for long.
Anyway, I'm not depressed, I'm happy, summers coming!

Falling thick and fast this morning at 8.20am....Rather more horizontal than vertical snow fall though. The top of Champery Cable car is bleak to say the least....About 20cm fallen but hard to see it and 60kph winds at 1600, approx 1900m and 90kph winds apparently. Links currently closed (Not surprising) and my lesson taking in steeps in Avoriaz and some moguls is not looking promising for my clients....Could be Hot Chocolate and Ovalmaltine sampling instead!

Sadly heavy, heavy rain and wind this morning....Cable car and most lifts shut due to high speed gusts. All my lessons cancelled unsurprisingly. Links definitely out of the question today. Raining at 1800m and 3 degrees. Not sure if the French sideis fairing any better? Off to see Didier Defago this afternoon in Morgins for the village celebrations and to welcome home their Olympic Champion.

I'm gald somebody's positive. I'm not out there until the 20th March and although I'm Avoriaz so will hopefully be surrounded by plenty of snow still, I'm starting to wish I'd gone back to a higher resort (higher top station I should say). I'm geeting visions of Kitzbuhel 2007 again...

turned out to be a ruddy great southerly storm, 10C at my house (850m) at midnight last night and a ton of rain, yummy! Turns out we just caught the edge of the storm

Yesterday a snowboarder died on Mt Chery, according to the paper he took off his board, ducked a rope and trod on a cornice, this gave way, he fell though, this caused an avalanche from which he did not survive. Ironically the last avalanche related death in the PDS was on Mt Chery last year.
and
A ski tourer was out with 3 friends on the Abondance side of the Roc de Tavaneurse yesteday, he was avalanched, they tried to find him with their transceivers and failed, a rescue party was flown to the scene with an avalanche dog who had been picked up with its handler from Avoriaz, they found the victim alive 45 minutes after he was buried. He is now in a bad way in Hospital..

any ideas how the weather is shaping up following on from what sounds like a pretty naff few days?
heading out on the 12th for a week, staying up in ski chamois chalethotel so not quite down in morzine but not quite avoriaz height either
webcam from the chalet looks to show a nice covering! any signs of another couple of feet over the course of the week and then glorious blue skies from the 12th?!?!

Blue sky day here today (Monday) in Champery. Pistes hard and fast this morning after a day of shut lifts, high winds and rain/snow up top. By 11 south facing slopes were soft and fun though. Came down at lunchtime and heard that its become quite slushy. The forecast for tomorrow is precipitation of the snowy variety above 1200m and rain below, with sunny intervals in the afternoon. Forecast has been alittle bizarre the last few days.

In les gets at the mo. Sunday most depressing day ever, just think sound of running water you get the picture. Day finished better with maybe 2cm above 1500. Monday great crisp morning nice pistes up top at least. By afternoon getting sugary round mid stations. Resort runs pretty much trashed though still skiable... Just. Much colder now at last the infernal dripping stopped but may be too late, anticipating ice rinks and advert for Tate n lyle. Expected tiny bit snow tomorrow morning so again hopefully good pistes higher up, but going to get depressingly warm again after. At least is going to freeze At night for rest of week. Sunday was enough to break any snow lover's spirit. Shame clearly been great snow up till now still loads around despite ridiculously warm conditions. only couple of bare patches on resort
runs. Not my year I guess what a week to pick but not despairing yet, still good skiing to be had - today up till lunchtime kicked.
If coming to PDs, aim high.

How thoroughly depressing! I am going out on Sunday!
This time last week (when I was booking flights and accommodation) the snow was good and the euro was at 1.15!
Guess it will have to be first lift and long lunches... so not all bad!

Bambi on ice, current forecast is cold and sunny next week. Will mean they can get the snow cannons going and with a bit of luck 10cm's at the weekend and life will be good again, at least on piste.

bobinch, TBH I'm not too downhearted... I spent my first ever week skiing in Morzine the first week in March in 2008. There were plenty of closed runs, lots of scrapy icy runs and the resort runs were pretty slushy! It snowed a bit during the week, to freshen what was open up, but the conditions were hardly epic!
I had a great time in 2008... This year it looks like the PDS has the majority of runs open and the web cams certainly look a lot better than 2008... I imagine I'll have a great time this time!
The wigglies certainly seem to suggest a cooling trend towards the end of this week and are starting to agree at below average temps for next... Not sure where the 10cm at the weekend is coming from... but heres hoping!

Only sounding depressed because two days before we came was looking like best conditions I'd ever had. It's nothing like 08. It's only bad relatively there's still piles of snow around. Woken up to 3 cm in resort judging by cars from window. Will melt in resort again fast but can't wait to get up there this morning should be decent. don't fancy driving elsewhere poor old fiesta only just made it this far.not been here before but we already like les gets, really nice atmosphere and low punk to human being ratio Tomorrow looking warmish again what's best way of skiing avoriaz from les gets, ski to morzine or just get there directly by road?

Firstly NOT a man and secondly I ride on snow and in the summer...Race pro mountainbike and racing this week in Saas Fee on the glacier!! So I hope for some more snow to make the race interesting! I need snow to teach skiing in the winter too. Ironically its snowing here in Champery this morning, albeit lightly at 8.50am!!!

sounds a bit mixed out there at the moment then! saying that, a quick look at the forecast (taken with a pinch of salt!) showed a week of blue skies and cold-ish temps. Of course, things could be very different by the 12th but if its a week of sunshine skiing and having to stay up high to get the best snow, i can think of worse ways to spend a week! besides, if it gets too slushy by the afternoon, we'll just extend the apres ski!
