Thanks for all the feedback Chris n...those FB pages look superb and sure those pistes will be fine for next week. Thanks for the hotel recommendation. Think will book that now, hotel looks great and the food will be fine for everybody...what's the general score on NYE in the village? Stick with a hotel or just wander the streets soaking up the fireworks and atmosphere?

divekris, We stayed in the apartment last year and found it very strange looking down on the fireworks! There are plenty of bars etc that will be very lively. A word of caution though if you have children with you, a lot of people who will be here not just locals have a scant regard for safety. One of the local girls got quite badly burned 2 years ago. Pistes at Scheffau were fine again today. There is plenty of green between the pistes but where the snow has been compacted / supplemented by artificial snow they are fine.

Samerberg Sue, I need to do one section of theory again, was running out of time due to language so concentrated on closing all of the others off. Overall happy with the result.

Samerberg Sue, that is exactly what I thought.
For those interested in the weather it is misty this morning but that should lif in the next hour. We had a little rain last night but not enough to do any serious damage to the pistes, below freezing at the moment. Hopefully some pictures this afternoon.

Tried to book the Hotel Wastlhof for NYE but they say they are full. Any other ideas or do you think just wing it and book something when we get to Niederau next Saturday? Thanks for any ideas

divekris, best talk to the tourist office NOW and have them send your request around to the accommodations. If you are not tied to Neiderau look on booking.com as they are showing availability in Soll, Westendorf etc for the NY week. You might end up staying somewhere like Worgl if you really need Neiderau.

Pamski, yes, he is looking for somewhere to eat out on NYE - his accommodation is the Almdorf cabins or something similar (on the previous age). I would think Carolyn would be the best advisor as she is there now and knows the resort extremely well.
divekris, Try the Tourist Office for now, but then blitz a few recommended places as soon as you get into the resort. You can be sure that lots of others (including locals) will be doing the same that's for sure! Friends of mine always leave it until the last minute and always end up disappointed. I've given up trying to organise something for them s they are so indecisive! Each year they say " we'll book earlier next year" but they never do. The Germans and Austrians really like to push he boat out on NYE so the best places fill up really quickly.

That would certainly be our experience of NYE - we used to stay at various places half board over NY and if we had friends doing B&B elsewhere we would have to speak really nicely to management to try and get them squeezed in to eat with us. And, yes, bangers galore, I was always amazed at how the bangers and fireworks were let off with gay abandon.

Thanks everyone... Sorry for confusion but yes we are staying at the Almdorf, so was asking for some ideas for eating on NYE. We don't want to leave it last minute so wanted to book something beforehand. Will try the tourist office and see if they can help but otherwise will have to wing it when we get there next Saturday. Any decent options suggested or will any of he hotels be fine? Thanks for the photos. Looking good and pleased there will be some snow next week. Kids will be in ski school so hopefully be enough for them. Snow is forecast for Alps this weekend but nothing in Niederau it seems. Really looking forward to arriving next week. Ski gear being dragged out of loft as we speak. Thanks again for the tips and photos

Merry Christmas to all, unfortunately föhn winds have taken their toll today. It was stormy during the night and +9 when I went out this morning. Some of the nursery areas are in very poor condition, desperate for a top up. Where there is a significant amount of man made snow cover is still rasonable. Upper mountain conitions were slightly heavy today, getting slushy towards the end of the day, overall not bad considering the temperatures. The large dump of snow forecast for tomorrow now looks like only a couple of centimeters in the evening after a day of rain. More is forecast for the weekend.

Cold with blue sky this morning, snow cannons running. Should be a good day on the upper slopes today.

Yup, snow cannons were on. The Lannerkopf was in excellent nick first thing this morning and we enjoyed a few runs down there. I am finishing at about 2.30 as enough for me but the sun was out and really enjoying being back in Niederau and catching up with a few old faces - ours are even older! Off to Auffach tomorrow.

I am so envious of you peoople who are able to spend New Year in Niederau. One year I will make it out there. It looks particularly appealing this year as we are having so much rain and wind here in Wales this year. Still, I have February to look forwrd to and am eagerly looking for snowy forecasts.

J Rhiannon, New Year here is something special. I have never seen as many pyrotechnics in one go. Celebrations carrying on tonight with lots of fireworks going off in the valley as I write this. Snow cannons have been running for 2 days now and this evening it looks as though the piste team https://www.facebook.com/pages/SNOW-CREW-Niederau/370590979742131?ref=stream are moving the piles of snow created on the lower slopes.
There is snow in the forecast but after the last forecast snow turned out to be rain I am not building my hopes up too much.

We were out quite early this morning and on the gondola from Auffach before 9 so early to pick up the gondola then to Alpach which is a first time for us as it has appeared since we were here four years ago - we spent a really very nice morning bumbling around there before coming back down to Auffach and downloading the whole way about 1.30. Lovely to be given cups of coffee and glasses of water - we are staying in the Austria, where no complaints about the meals but really odd that they won't serve jugs of tap water at dinner, although we are buying loads of wine, very fawlty towers.

When we stayed in the Austria we had the same problem with getting jugs of water, but in the end they gave in (grumpily), but only when we ordered drinks that cost money at the same time - and only 1 jug per meal with no chance of a refill. No such problem in the Harfenwirt - and they were also happy to give my friend a jug full of ice cubes to go with her wine as she likes the 2 together.

Very quiet out there today - the run down the mountain was the best we have seen it this week - and it makes a difference now that so many people have packed up and gone home, or gone to Auffach for the day. The weather looks set to change .... to rain I think probably and it is very warm.

Hi all. Went to Niederau last year for a day and loved it. Want to go again
Does anyone have hotel recommendations in Niederau. Which is the best month to go?
|
|
|
|
|
You know it makes sense.
|
matt23, Depends what you are looking for, family luxury, cheap and cheerful, party central, half board, b&b, self catering etc. Are you looking for diy or a package?
Best month for snow is probably mid to late Feb but the place is packed then with most of Europe on half term holidays. January is a lot quieter and usually colder, March is a lot warmer with generally good snow in the morning with the length of good afternoon skiing getting shorter as the month goes on.

Hello, apologies for the lack of reports lately but have had to put our study away to make room for visitors to stay and computer packed away for 2 weeks! Chris is doing a fantastic job, and lets hope for colder weather and snow soon. The runs are holding up very well, and we are looking forward to the rest of the season here in paradise - sorry, Niederau!

You were right the first time carolyn, paradise. Had a good couple of hours actually skiing first thing this morning. A few runs down the Marchbachjoch followed by a couple of laps of the Lannerkopfl, snow was good and firm early on.
matt23, most if not all of the hotels get good reviews you could look on http://www.wildschoenau.com/en/hotels-and-accommodation for details.

divekris, think that we met you this evening - my OH says that meeting us old whatsits would be enough to put anyone off - but you can see that we love the village and that although we live elsewhere now we still love coming back. Looks like a really nice place that you chose to stay. Hope that 6.20 pick up is not too soon!

The snow was lovely up at the chapel and fine down the famous red 19 yesterday but today the sun has gone in and it is milder and cloudy. The forecast is to clear up next week with plenty sun but no snow showing except for a few "wintery showers" tomorrow. Pamski, are you still here? If so for how long? Wouls be goos to see you!

carolyn, yes we are still here! not leaving until tomorrow morning. We have decided not to ski today - we only bought passes till yesterday as not sure if the hotel would be able to fit us in for tonight - they can - but we are going to have a day off! We could meet you for a drink late afternoon?

Just back from Niederau and just wanted to say what a great week we had. Met Pamski on last evening in the Bauernkeller at the Almdorf (a lovely place to eat and no you wouldn't put anyone off coming to the area...you are clearly very fond of Niederau). Thanks to everyone for all the tips and ideas. It's a lovely village, pity about the poor snow but at least we had a lot of sun and the kids loved ski schoool. Will be back!
