Correcting myself - Arabba just closed a bunch of lifts including marmolada (that’s what I would expect…) didn’t know they’d change this in the same morning

@Snow&skifan, do you mean the runs down from Dantercepies to Selva?
If you come off the chair at Dantercepies on your way up from Colfosco, stay left and take the easier route down by Panorama Bar.
Again stay left for the easiest route down. Those runs down into Selva from Dantercepies are all excellent. |
Hi, yes. I knew my description of the top point was inaccurate but as a newbie couldn’t find a place name.
Fantastic here today, just keeps snowing and snowing, anyone in the Dolomites just now is incredibly lucky.
I’m skiing on my own (I’m happy to) as the two fair weather skiers in my family have chickened out

@Snow&skifan, I am jealous. I am looking to head out end of next week.
Where you going for lunch?
I can recommend Punta Trieste for the lamb chops and veal ribeye. Also Crep de Munt for everything.
Easy to find from Corvara.

@Snow&skifan, sssshhhhhh mate, don't want it filling up there!
Some of the best weeks I've skied have been the Dollies pre-Christmas week after decent early snow. Blue skies and no one there.

There's a thought, especially as there are now flights on Weds and Sundays to Bolzano from Stansted... could be a last minute thing this Dec

Off on Saturday to the same hotel we stayed in last March (Acadia in Selva, right next to Nives drag)...booked last March...
It's just a bit different from elsewhere

Bear with me, as it’s snowing heavily high up. I took the gondola up to the Jimmi Hut from Colfosco, then to Selva. But I ended up at Colfosco
Obviously took the wrong piste up the top.

We usually ski that week above Schladming. We lucked out with snow but on 23/12/22 and 23/12/23 torrential rain arrived. At 1,000m, and the last few weeks have seen +16c on many days, surely the warmest February in recorded history in Styria?
We’ve had a good run for our money there, I’ll look at the Dolomites again.

I know where that hotel is - same side of the road. Snow on trees is fantastic, and the south facing side of the valley should be snow covered still unlike last March...unless the rain gets it...

I had quite an adventure today. The weather turned and was much windier in areas. I got to my second lift on the way to my next hut, and found that it was closed due to winds. It was the only way I could get to Lagazuoi this afternoon. The trail was closed as well, but the lift attendants gave me permission to skin up (so glad I brought my skins). It was a little less than 2 miles (3k) of climbing to a very windy top, but I was able to get to the pass and ski down the other side. I made it all the way to the next pass (Armentarola-Falzerego) where I had to take a taxi, but there were no taxis because no one was traveling. Eventually, I got lucky and a taxi came down and he saw me signal him. I had to pay the full fare of €35 instead of the usual €8 for a single person. He was able to drop me off at the top of the pass but the tram taking me to Rifugio Lagazuoi was shut down due to winds and the rifugio was closed to guests. The trails to the next working lift had not been groomed and had about 4 feet of snow on them, making it impossible to get anywhere. So I skied the road down the other side of the pass to the next lift. I took that lift which brought me to rifugio Scoiattoli where I stayed a night in 2020. They gave me a room in a dormitory and said they may be able to move me to a private room if it ends up other clients can’t make it given the weather. Big adventure!

Hi all. I woke up in Bolzano and will be shortly taking the bus to the Suisi Cabanova. From there I’ll ski over to Val di Fazza to my first rifugio. I’ll let you know how the conditions are. I’m a bit concerned because I’m supposed to be staying the night at the Lagazuoi and Averau rifugios Tuesday and Wednesday nights. However, the road from Armentarola to the Lagazuoi bubble remains closed. I can’t get there from the Civetta area either because despite the bus running to the Fedare lift, that lift and numerous others remain closed. Wish me luck! |
On Sunday almost all high passes were closed. Passo Rolle, San Pellegrino, Valles, Falzarego (the one you mention going from San Cassiano to the Lagazuoi lift), Giau, Fedaia, all red. I know Passo Rolle and Valles are closed today as well. No info on the others.
Been skiing in fresh pow the full weekend in Civetta. Nice tree line runs. About 1m of fresh snow, had to dig out a lost ski from a buddy took a while Will be going back sat and sun. Saturday, was reasonably sunny. Started snowing again saturday evening. Sunday when we left home (Feltre) it was raining and snowing from Agordo (600m asl). Stopped snowing around noon.

What an adventure!! Good you are safe! But it means you are just below Averau that you booked no? From Scoiattoli it's just 1 lift up to Averau. (or about 45min / 1 hour of skinning).

I know how longs a piece of string but what are folks experiences of skiing the Dolomites last week of March? May have an opportunity and looking at the current dumping Looked at other European resorts by they don’t have “that magic” that Dolomites do for us, although not averse to anywhere else!

How bad - rifugio Scoiattoli may well be one of the nicest places in the world to have to unexpectedly stay!
How light is the powder people? I have a sense with the freezing line issues it mightn't quite be champagne?

@8611, light enough above 1800m at Rittner Horn today, a bit heavy below later on, and some rain below 1600m towards the end od the day. This was all on south facing slopes.

The powder wasn’t wet or heavy at all, huge heaps of new light and fluffy stuff.
Only encountered heavy snow mid afternoon circa 1,700m or below on pistes. No rain at all, still snowing, the Corvara valley temperature briefly peaked at 3.4c.

I would have a look at the movi family apartment hotel in corvara. They have a creche but as were not using it can't comment on prices or suitability for a 2 year old but staff seem friendly. Hotel has an amazing kids pool area and a soft play area. It's expensive but worth it.

To the seasoned Dolomites SH’s, how much should we budget for both legs of a private taxi transfer from say Verona to Corvara? We don’t carry skis, but do have large cases.
I’m actually fine driving overseas and in winter, I’ve used chains, but now I can’t be bothered with that, so would prefer not to car rent.

Likely to be a lot more from Verona. We paid €300 one way recently just to take us to Castelrotto, which is before Val Gardena. Corvara is quite a way further.

Sorry, I meant Venice.
I thought of Verona as that’s where we fly to when visiting western Trentino-Alto-Adige.

I fly into Milan and it’s €13 for a one-way to Milano Centrale train station, about €30 for an easy three hour trip to Bolzano. The bus station is right next to the train station and it’s three euros and 30 minutes to get to Suisi or Castelrotto. I travel with a big ski bag on wheels and a backpack.
I’m having a cappachino at rifugio Scoiattoli right now. Great snow conditions, visibility comes and goes, no wind. But lots of closures surrounding the area.
