So down to 8 days until arrival on morzine on 30th and no ones talking about the forecast for then? Is it too far out to believe the meteoblue one that seems to show bucket loads of snow startin 29 th?

@MHskier, 8 days is too far away to have any certainty, but that period currently looks unsettled for the northern Alps.
For somewhere low like Morzine, could be a lot of rain at valley level. Or could be snow. Should have a better idea in a few days' time.

@MHskier, other than the runs back to the valley, most of the skiing accessible from Morzine is 14/1500m+ - there’s plenty of great snow above that level (and unrecognisable from last year). What’s still green is the bottom bit of Pleney, which as@denfinella says could get snow or could get rain. And will probably be a bit of both.

Christmas Eve through to about the end of the year looks warm, dry and sunny which should be good for skiing. After that GEFS shows a lot of scatter and it is looking more unsettled but perhaps trending slightly cooler. The start of this year has been marginal everywhere which must be linked to the record breaking warmth across Europe over the last 12 months beforehand.

Got a funny feeling the suggested breakdown on GFS around the 30th/31st Dec that’s been cropping up recently is gonna be one of those thats continually pushed out , now coming in on the 1st apparently

Storm Pia slamming into the Alps today.
Very windy.
Some parts of Europe, such as Italy, will soon be a whole month without any real snow.

Another windy day today.
Week of bluebird ahead.
Zero iso for much of the European Alps zooming back up to 3000-4000m.
Some countries, like the UK, may see the hottest ever Xmas Day on record.
Wildfires burning in NW Italy. Arid ground. No major snow or rain for approaching a month.

For Christmas Eve we're looking at a zero iso at 3300 to 3500m in the French N.A.; close to 4000m in the Southern Alps. Should be dry, very warm and sunny through to Thursday when there will be a return to more unstable weather in the Alps but with a very high snowline; perhaps dropping on Saturday. Today I'd say the snow is ok above 1600m on piste, off piste maybe go above 1800-2000 except on north facing bowls that have accumulated some powder. There was about 10-15cm of fresh on a solid base where we were in the Belledonne range today > 1800m.
Perfect weather for the start of Christmas week really.
Slow start to the season but better than last year though, this was at 1800m
today the run was perfect to ski with perhaps 30cm of packed snow.

I understand @whitegold has a bit of a reputation on this forum, but I don’t recall reading any especially trolly comments from them (on this thread at least) over the last few weeks. Certainly wouldn’t wish an unhappy Xmas on anyone.

@davehas, I think it's a little off too but @yellowsnow only* ever posts (generally untrue) negativity about how we're all going to have a terrible time,. so it's not totally unfair.

I’m in Les Arcs at the moment, enjoying a Christmas ski with my girlfriend. We skied on-piste yesterday, always above 1800m. On-piste conditions were about as good as they get. Snow depths at that elevation were good enough for just about complete coverage, with no stones or thin patches on piste, and I’ve not hit a single thing when skiing off-piste since the resort opened this winter. The weather was just about as good as it gets. It being a Saturday there were just about zero lift queues. If you are a piste-only skier I’d say the day was as close to perfect as possible, wonderful at any time of the year never mind the second week of the season, before Christmas Day.
Piste conditions will probably deteriorate as the week goes on, as they inevitably do between fresh falls of snow, but the holiday week looks like it’s going to be extremely enjoyable. The long term forecast is beginning to show more disturbed weather patterns at the end of the week, perhaps with more snow coming in to refresh the conditions.
For those who are able to access higher terrain, perhaps 1800m and up, it would make me wonder about their state of mind if they were unable to find any joy in skiing at the moment. I’ve skied the last 25 Christmases, give or take one or two, and I’ve had better conditions no doubt, but I’ve had a lot, lot worse.

Snow cover up high is excellent I think we have become a little greedy and cannot remember the starts especially from long ago before major snow cannon coverage changed things . I’ve had some horrendous NY trips in the past when you really had no reference apart from the snow reports on teletext .

@rob@rar, very nice. I would only add that we have around 250cms of depth around 1,900m here apparently.
Which is way more than seasonal avg!

I've had a look at the latest models and their ensemble forecasts. All indicate a mobile pattern over the North Atlantic and northern Europe with little indication of any significant weather systems reaching the Alps in the next 6-7 days. All models show a slow decline in 5000 FT temperature from Ps 05 to about zero in that time. Beyond 7 days, model variability and uncertainty kick in with some showing a trough disruption (major low developing over Italy) whilst others maintain mobility, albeit with temperatures continuing a slow decline. In summary, not much happening for a week, but increased probability of decent snowfall in New Year. If (a big!) the trough disruption were to occur, the southern Alps could get some much needed snow. Merry Christmas to you all.

Absurdly warm in the Beaufortain at 1650 metres. Sitting in deck chair in jeans and light fleece. Pistes reportedly excellent , with scarcely any queues. No precipitation this week, please! Family came in for lunch and stripped off layers.

Beautiful in Flaine, snow seemed great, I imagine it will be spring like by the end in the lower parts of the other resorts!! And I didn’t need any heat pads for my hands or feet so that is a result, it’s like skiing at favourite time of year which is actually March/April . Unfortunately the instructor heading up the youngest ski school group at ESI is no good so that may still scupper the week plus, an age range of 4-8 is quite a difference for the youngest & I did ask before booking that this wouldn’t be the case…

I'm not sure I believe the current forecast, for this area at least. It was supposed to be several days of sunshine with a drop in the wind, but meteo fenestra very much suggests otherwise. It is very warm though, 5C at 2000m today.

As predicted, it was tropical across Western Europe today.
London had its hottest Xmas Eve this century.
Hit +12c at 1500m in the Southern European Alps.
Another bluey tomorrow.
Zero iso in France on Mon to Weds headed for 3300m -- at night!
Happy Xmas

My preference is skiing at Oc or lower.
But I got the impression that many Snowheads across recent threads were excited about the conditions this week …. the sun and no rain, the heat doesn’t particularly bother them.

If you mean the time of the year, then I prefer working over xmas, easter, summer & any other holiday that is going to spoiled because of the increase number of kids.
If you mean the conditions, then nope - I know my enjoyment factor decreases in the conditions mentioned.
I much prefer being in a blizzard & wipeout. I remember those days better & it makes the beer colder & the spiked hot chocolate taste even better. Each to their own.
