@PJ Maza, absolutely agree with all of the above. I always think that Meribel-Mottaret is the most convenient place to stay for accessing the entire domain.

Currently snowing right down here in Bozel (850m…). Maybe we are on for another April/May like last year!

@Hurtle, agree. stayed in Mottaret twice and it's so good.
(except if you fudge up and get "ours" back to base - bleurgh)
although have recently found new love for Les Men with the family.

Mottaret is super convenient - particularly, if you jump on Combes, Plattieres or PdL before the ski school madness begins. We’ve also started utilising the normally quiet Roc de Tougne chair to head over to the Belleville valley. The red Julie off the top is one of my favourites first thing in the AM.

What do we think about the wind on the weekend, high chance that a mountain and all lifts are going to be closed?

@Edvarts66, there is no way the whole mountain will shut IMHO, high links might shut or might be open and shut without much warning, hence they usually put boards out advising against inter valley travel.

Want to make a quick weekend trip, France or Austria because going with a car, but can't understand where the best conditions are going to be as the souther wind is destroying the fresh snow ((

Most of the high lifts closed around lunchtime today, some earlier. Advised against using links from first thing.

Afternoon! On our way for an epic trip to VT. Has anyone been over to Orelle recently? Is it worth a visit? Any favourite runs to recommend?
We have never been over that side of the 3V.
Also my husband thinks you can ski “in Italy” from Orelle. Is that right?!
|
|
|
|
|

@SirCharles, Orelle had great snow a week ago, it's high so suspect it'll still be good. There are 4 lifts to chose from 1 black 2 reds and 4 blues I think, go ski 'em all then head back! But if the forecast winds are present the lifts in/out maybe shut.
I think your husband is getting confused with another ski resort, perhaps La Rosiere which is linked to La Thuile in Italy??

So looking forward to this weekend/week at VT. So it looks like you recommend not skiing out of the valley on Sat and Sunday due to high winds. What’s the very flat run like down to Les Menuires if we need to get lower out of the wind?

@Cato, see what the lift company say, they have boards out usually at the lower lifts if needed.

We skied Orelle quite a bit last April, lovely slopes, well worth a visit, all runs are great.

As others have said, just keep an eye on the 3 Vallees app - it has a "live" status feed for lifts + runs (inc which runs have been groomed overnight).
There is absolutely no point heading down to LM on the Boulevard Cumin as the top of Bruyeres or other key lifts for your return back to VT may be closed too. You just need to plan your day depending on what the weather and the lift company throw at you.
Hopefully, the Plan de l'Eau / Boismint sector (2 fast chairs / lovely network of blues and reds) will escape any lift closures.

Just got last lift down from Rhodos mid station to avoid the slush fest with wife and kids. Stopping people loading and then it was off by the time we were on our way back up to mottaret on tougnette. Don't think we will bother going back out after lunch.

Looking bleak in Meribel now. Started queuing for tougnets 2 (huge queues), but after 10mins the lift stopped. We gave up the ghost and wandered over to the L’Arpasson where it seems like most of the mountain have decamped.
Lifts closed everywhere for anything higher up and anything below 2000 is getting slushier by the minute.
Hoping the winds die down later today / tonight - our 3V lift passes have been defunct since getting here weds night - we’ve been trapped in Meribel both days…

It has certainly been blowing in Meribel but has eased off a bit now. All the lifts are currently closed. Tougnette 1 was stopped for quite a while, with passengers onboard, and the cabins swinging quite dramatically in the gusts!

If anyone is skiing in VT, it is interesting to see the ice tunnel that has appeared under the Glacier de Peclet. It can be reached by traversing off piste, to the left, just before the Christine piste splits off from the Tete Ronde. There has been quite a queue to go through but it was less busy last week.

Ths wind is the main issue, they have cancelled the 3v enduro planned for sunday. Based on that and looking at forecasts it doesn't look like things will improve much until Monday where a fair bit of precipitation is forecast combined with lower temperatures and wind.

@MontyMM, Courchevel seemed to keep the most open today, I’d check the 3v app first thing tomorrow personally.
It’s late March you are going to get slushy/mushy snow most places below 1800m, Ive skied alot this time of year and don’t think slushy snow is an issue and actually quite enjoy slushy bumps!

Pretty windy down in St M this morning, much more than first thing yesterday, so I don’t think there will be much opening today. Dog walk and house tidying on the agenda.

Not looking good in Méribel either.
Went to the grocery store in Mottaret this morning and the winds even at this level are very strong. Debris littered around.
Be surprised if any lifts open this morning.
Are there buses that run from Meribel to Courchevel ??
|
|
|
|
|
|
@seano508, not any more. If there is nothing open in the Meribel valley there isn't likely to be much in Courchevel either.
If you are really keen /desperate it is only around 3 miles walk (taxi?) from Meribel Village to La Tania, both of which are on their resort navette routes.
