So silly me, I must have been imagining all that wind affected snow at altitude that was nigh on impossible to ski, or presume you're just talking piste
That said sitting here typing this on the terrace in some very welcome warm sunshine.
Out on the XC trails early tomorrow morning?

it is pretty good in most places no? Whitespirits all round. Mate who lives in Grand Massif reckons he’s had the day of the season already today.
Am away from computer but some indications that all hope is not lost for a widespread Xmas dump. East is nailed on, west 60:40, maybe 70:30 after another round. Scotland too.
East coast US storm will start the cycle

Can we not all just ignore Whitegold’s posts and not quote them?
It’s like Groundhog Day, every year is the same he/she just posts non stop negativity
Sure, as each year goes by we see (sadly) more evidence of climate change especially at low altitude but they revel in this for some reason
This thread is great and very useful and interesting but please let’s not feed the troll

MeteoBlue forecasting a half metre dump on Thurs/Fri, for Schladming (where we are). Appears to be the same for all of Austria, St Anton is the same for example.

Avoriaz temperatures do seem very warm from yesterday and the next few days. Hopefully won’t affect the base too much.

@MHskier, unlikely to. Mild weather for a few days is not an issue.

The Met Office pressure chart is showing a windy week across the UK and possibly across the western alps for a time on Friday.

It was really cold this afternoon. 0 degrees at 1700m in the car park and the pistes stayed perfect. The forecast 3500m iso certainly didn’t happen in Verbier.

Arrived in Tignes on Saturday. Glorious first day yesterday. Blue Sky, not a cloud. Hardly a breeze and pretty warm in the sun.
Mostly perfect soft piste everywhere we went. Slightly scrapy in the shade in busy spots at end of day. Very quiet with no queues for any lift all day. Did grand motte from the first station and almost had it to ourselves.
Pints seem to be a tenner nearly everywhere now!

Is this due to tax? Why is French beer more expensive than CH while for wine it’s the opposite?

Pints are expensive due to staffing costs, high rent, a short time to make money, and also, yes, a sadly bit of ripping off of tourists.
Alcohol tax is lower in France than it is in the UK.
I run a brewery here in the Alps, and my beer in bars sells between 7-11€ depending on how the bar structures their pricing/margins.

I'm curious why beer in France is generally so much more expensive than Austria. In Morzine a few summers back I was shocked to be paying over €8 a pint, but I assume it's more now. The other day in St Anton I was shocked to pay €7 for a point, which is extortionate for Austria (even with much higher rents city centre bars in Innsbruck are like €3.50-€5) but seems to be cheap for France.
I can understand why your craft beers cost more, but not a bog-standard pine of Kronenbourg or whatever. Rents, staff and other costs can't be dramatically different to AT..?
Edit: sorry, nothing to do with weather...

I disagree - The worse the weather, the less the skiing and the more the Beer!

Thought it might be duty.
Found this interesting - but appears not https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/global/beer-taxes-in-europe-2023/
So maybe has more to do with your German neighbours who pay a low tax rate & Austria want tourists to spend money?

The big thing here is that the big breweries have in the past 2 years done back to back 15% price increases.
Bars here do a x4 margin on beer. So if they pay 2€ a pint, you pay 8€.
The problem is that a lot of people just apply this as a flat rate. Whereas with your cheap lager you could do x5, and an IPA maybe x3, and take a hit on margin on something you won't sell quite as much on.
To be honest, it all seems to be that people try make as much money as they can in 4 months.

Yes, plenty of precipitation coming through this week, it just a question of what at levels it falls as snow, and where. Higher (obviously) and eastern look better and southern side of the Alps ridge also.
New year is then looking colder and snowy again - at the moment

@pam w, Yes the latest runs have continued to suggest that after this brief weather lull we go back to the cold/tropical/cold/tropical rollercoaster of the last month or so .
The western alps really do seem to be the battle ground between the two air masses again .

Historically, is that very often the case?
I picture a raft French ski resorts generally set fair by decent altitude. Whilst it’s often rainy and mild in Grenoble, Annecy, Albertville and Chambery.
The Austria Alps being significantly further from Atlantic air, very often decent at most altitudes from December.

@clarky999, €7 is not that expensive for St Anton, Basecamp is a good deal more not far off €10, the Moose around €8. If you want Innsbruck prices there is the train station bar which is (or was) less than €4. Here in Bavaria the local pub is €4.20 which caused some complaints when it went up from €3.90 a few months back. I believe that a Mass (1L) was around €12 at Oktoberfest this year. Not sure what this has to do with the weather forecast

ECM now seems to have lined up with GFS in forecasting a big hit of snow for Austria especially on Friday.
Could be an exciting transfer day for those going for Xmas week

@munich_irish, oh yeah I know other places cost more, I'm just surprised that everywhere is so much more expensive than Innsbruck (where rents are probably at least 3x what the St Anton bars are paying). BaseCamp are having a laugh at €10 though! We used to drink there quite a bit when I did my first season in St Anton (08/09) and I don't remember it being particularly expensive (or more expensive than anywhere else) back then.

Sites such as MeteoBlue have consistently forecast a big dump over eg Schladming starting Thursday evening, lasting until Saturday morning. Possibly 90cm?
