A bit of a shock there, most of all for Faivre it seems.

@ster, really sad to see it happen - but amazing for Faivre - two gold medals!

Quite reassuring to see that even the best in the world can put in turns like I do often on ice and end up on my arris (not saying my perception of ice is the same as that course)

I thought it did not look very steep -- until one faller proceeded to slide down the slope for quite some distance !!

Boiler plate, shows the high level of technique required. Usually TV pictures don't convey the steepness and, more significantly, the severity of surfaces.

Agreed on both points although I thought these Cortina races were very well shot, perhaps they lent themselves to good camera positions and angles, but the TV definitely doesn't show the surfaces well at all. They need Geoffrey Boycott and his keys.

Interesting that the course deteriorated really fast and has now levelled out somewhat. Looks like a tight first run if you discount the first five or so bibs.

Chinese skiers don't seem to be entered in this WSC, although I remember them racing at previous ones. They use St. Anton as a training base when in Europe, I've come across them training on Rendl a few times.

@davidthornton,
A Thai skier competed at one of the "recent" Olympics.
Vanessa Mae, the famous violonist competed for Thailand. There was a debate about how she managed to meet the qualification time to compete. She spent a lot of time in Zermatt where she owned a chalet.
In Feb 2022 the Winter Olympics are based in Beijing!

@Timmycb5, thats what I thought after the Mens GS.
Looks a steep run but soft.
I see there a Japanese skier in the top 10. I don’t recall much from this nation in alpine events.

Heck of a race. Despite the ultimate decent margins between the top 3 it was exciting to the end.
Same piste for the men's tomorrow?

It looked to me like they started salting during the race, some of the course crew had buckets. The second run will have been salted beforehand.
Salted snow skis differently to normal ice, you really want to practice a bit on it first, I guess teams will have seen the weather forecast though.

I'm not sure why, but a masdive factor in the results in Cortina has been start number

There was a famous test technique at ADH, where (according to a French friend) "everybody passed". The opener's enormous thighs were not their usual advantage in the soft stuff!

Men's 2nd run will start 15 to 1 then 16 to 30 because of the deteriorating conditions

A lot of bunching at the top, even from the higher starters hitting the top with Pertl.
Apparently Ryding is on injected pain killers for a lower back problem.
10C for the second run will make it interesting.Water skiing anyone?
