Whitegold, and Steve Angus, glad you enjoy the shots. Had a great day at Coronet today with three runs down the back bowls getting fresh tracks each time. Went way down below the traverse line so a bit of hiking required but the snow was nice boot top and sooooo smooth, way better than any thing I had yesterday at the Remarkables. On the rest of the mountain a bit variable but lots of fun to be had and no rocks to worry about. Now home with tired legs and a nice cup of tea

A somewhat unexpected 15cm at Coronet last night, raining in town at the moment, so I would guess more snow on the hills.
And looking like a decent amount on the way in bits and pieces over the next week or so.
It's been a patchy July and August, but I think September will be having a great start.
I've only got 3 weeks left in Queenstown, but looking forward to catching the end of the season in the Mackenzie and Canterbury.

hang11, Enjoy the next 3 weeks, it should be good with the forcast snow falls. |
Cheers!
I'm only moving a couple of hours North, new locals will be Dobson/Fox/Roundhill and Hutt, although not keen on spending much time at the latter. And I'll have a work funded four wheeler too Looking forward to a change of scenery, some different fish to annoy, and being a bit closer to some decent surf on the Banks Peninsula as well.
Hopefully there will be a good long season into late October, as some of the smaller mountains open on weekends if the snow gods come to the party.

More snow last night on the local mountains. 25cm on the top half of Coronet Peak with it reducing to 7cm of wet slop at the bottom. On the web cams the visibility is very poor but it might clear for a while after lunch so I might head up for a couple of hours latter.
Here is a shot of the night skiing lights on last night. This was taken between the showers. (edited with correct link)

Went to Ohau today.
Best pow day of the season for me, patchy cloud, but enough viz to pick a line. And about 30 people up there Spent the day lapping the lift in untracked goodness. The ridge was closed, so I would think there will be more of the same when they open it up.

Shimmy Alcott, Well just to check on the snow I went up for a few runs this morning before an afternoon in the office. Snow was hard on piste but crusty and lumpy off piste. No fun at all. It should improve with time and use. More snow forcast for Friday so the weekend looks good.

Mount Dobson on Tuesday of this week sounds like it was fantastic - just heard from a friend who was there - 45cm's of fresh snow on a 2.8m base, bluebird, 36 cars in the car park and he managed 20+ uncut pow runs. He's calling it his best day ever in 17 seasons in NZ.
So it must have been bloody good!

hang11, Get him to send some photos. Got to keep the northern folks jealous
Shimmy Alcott, Just organised my first after winter break for late October. Hope to do a bit of hiking and time in the hills.
The forcast for tomorrow is still for snow with some expected as low as 200m. Considering the lake and town is at 320m it could be a white morning with the usual havoc on the roads as the realy smart locals get stuck everywhere and block all the roads. I might just take the camera with me to capture the fun.

^^great, one of my snow chains is in at the engineering place getting welded back together
If you see a bloke in a little suzuki 4wd going round in circles, it's me
I'm planning to head up to TC on Saturday, first time this season. Will take my DSLR and try to get some nice pics to keep the northern hemisphere jealousy thing going.
Just organised my first after winter trip too, tramping near the Lewis Pass at the beginning of November, hassling the fish on opening day. Last time we went in to the same spot, we pulled out 36 trout in 8 hours, biggest being 9lb. Really looking forward to getting back in there.

hang11, Looks like we might get a bit all right. They are forecasting 10cm plus for tomorrow and who knows what latter in the week. Had a surprisingly good day at Coronet yesterday on the soft spring snow. The off piste was very nice with a smooth surface that you could really get your edges into.

Metvuw looks like a few days of it, with another one in behind that storm. I reckon it could end up with half a metre over three or four days, but probably just being a bit too hopeful with that prediction,
This weekend will be my last chance to get up a Queenstown hill this season, so the timing is good.
And hopefully Ohau or Dobson the following weekend.

Heaps of snow coming down in Arrowtown this morning, and snowing in Queenstown too.
Looking at the forecast, there will be a few days of this. 75cm of snow forecast on the Milford Rd today, although lots of wind coming too.
TC could be great when the weather clears - about a metre of new snow forecast over the next few days.

Shot up to CP for a couple of hours this morning, great new snow, very wind affected, and stripped in places, but good pockets in places. It was snowing heavily when I left.
That was my last day at CP for this season, moving house tomorrow, so the tail end of the season will be spent at some of the Mackenzie hills. Looking forward to it.

As hang11, said the new snow was quite wind affected but in the sheltered areas it was great. I managed to be in the first group into the back bowls when they were opened. Nice boot top snow, a little heavy but lots of fun. Today was also very nice but everything is tracked out. Could be more snow over the next two days. hang11, enjoy the new job and location. There is plenty of snow up that way so you should have fun.

Sorry about that
There was a lot more snow around today through Mackenzie than last weekend, although it didn't look that great at Ohau or Dobson when I drove past them today, and definitely less generally than around Queenstown.

Another 10cm over night and a bit more this morning so the spring is just getting better and better. Forecast is for 30cm to 45cm more over the next three days

Shimmy Alcott, Last time on snow was Sunday but not since then due to weather, work etc. But should get out in the next couple of days. Another few cms over night and more forecast for this afternoon and tomorrow.

Shimmy Alcott, Yes it does but I have to pay for skiing somehow. 10cms at Coronet overnight and 15 to 25 at the Remakables. The snow base just keeps growing even though we are in the last few weeks of the season. I hope they decide to stay open longer this year but not holding my breath. The lift management folks are not that flexible here.
The weather has not been good for all unfortunately. In Invercargill city (on south coast) the 10 year old sports stadium roof collapsed due to heavy snow. There has also been heavy loss of lambs and calves in Southland province due to the continuing cold, wet and very windy weather. It has been the worst weather during lambing down there in living memory. Further north the strong winds have damaged buildings and electricity has been out for thousands of homes. The storm system is bigger than Australia and is only now starting to move away.
