1985 Villars (as a kid, wow what an experience!)
1987, 1989, 1992 Lake Placid (x3) (friends out there) Murren
1994 Saalbach
1996 Les Menuires (school trip, more under age drinking than skiing! )
2000 Glencoe* (scary! first day on skis since school!)
2002 Glenshee* (absolutely fantastic, about 3 years ago for a day...camped in the car park and had about 2 foot of snow overnight, solid blue skies, no wind....all gone 2 days later!)
2004 Lecht (just cos it was ncie to put on skis again, queued for 2 hours to get them tho!)
2004 Cairngorm (15 of us, all mixed ability, fairly poo conditions, but good fun anyway!)
awaiting my first (proper, e.g. non-scottish) ski trip for 4 years...to Mottaret
* PS i think its very sad they are being sold, but then again the winters have been rubbish recently, ill miss dodging the rocks, and the queuing etiquette is much better than Europe! (not as good as america tho!)

A short career, over the last 7 years, and almost entirely North American:
Big Mountain (Montana)
Jasper
Banff (Norquay/Lake Louise/Sunshine; repeatedly)
Kimberley
Fernie
Panorama
Nakiska
Salt Lake City (Park City/Canyons/Deer Valley)
Also
Yuzawa (Japan)
Madonna di Campiglio (Hallo Europe, and goodbye).
Oh yeah. Not forgetting Piz Castleford.

Martyn C - yes see your point.... was so impressed by the earlier stage of your skiing career that I didn't read to the end!!
I think Verbier is one of those ones that you either love or hate.... I haven't been there for years having overdosed on it when younger. But, when there used to spend most of my time off piste with guides and charging round the blacks - all awesome and you forget how much you've sworn at the long lift queues!

Seems like most of us have been to the usual places - 3V, VdI, Zermatt, Verbier...and so have I. But I always love going to an obscure place where my expectations are low, then being pleasantly surprised! In that category would be:
Dienten, Sonnenkopf, Ste Foy, Gerlos, Sierra Nevada, and Ilkley Moor!

Ilkley Moor!??! how would you have scored the "on-hill" facilities?!

Ilkley Moor skiing was pretty traumatic - there was about 9" of typical wet English sludge over a not so firm base of rotten bracken, plus a few half-buried park benches to catch you out. The only technique that worked was lean-back windscreen wiper jump turns, otherwise your tips got hooked by the bracken!! One local bloke walking his dog did a complete double take and made us pose in Ski-Sunday tuck positions for a photo (sad, I know), so his wife would believe that idiots were really trying to ski. The off-slope facilities however were much better - roast beef & Yorkshire puds at Dick Hudson's pub!

I now realise I'm practically a novice compared to you guys but here goes:
Chateau d'Oex (where I 1st practised the noble art, AAGGHH, such
sweet memories);
Marilleva/Madonna di Campiglio;
Pas de la Casa;
Livigno;
Aviemore (w/e);
Livigno;
Alpe d'Huez;
Zermatt.
That's it, 1 week n each, bar Aviemore. A slight bias for Italy in my case, something to do with the wine, food, men.......although not particularily in that order.....

Christlum - likewise
Hintertux - a few
Skiwelt - a few, too

Plus MK, Castleford and Sheffield !
Also quite a few minor hills on the German / Austrian borders, where I learnt to ski.

Interesting lists including so many of the 'old favourites'.. so I'll leave those out. I learnt to ski among the following in France, rather less familiar! But there are some beautiful places to explore far from the ski tourist factories, away down in the Provençal sunshine.....
Southern French Alps:
Orcières Merlette, St Leger, Ancelle, Chaillol, Val d'Allos, Pra-Loup, Sauze-Supersauze, Sainte Anne, Puy Saint Vincent, Céüze, Superdévoluy, La Joue du Loup, Mont Serein (Ventoux), Isola 2000, Risoul, Vars, Montgenèvre, Serre Chevalier (ok a mini ski tourist factory but one of my favourites all the same), Les Orres, Réallon, Puy Saint Vincent, Vallouise, Chabanon, St Jean Montclar, Valberg, Val Pelens, Crevoux....
And how about the Vosges? Not quite the same weather, but with its own quiet, tree-clad charm...
Le Bonhomme, La Bresse, Le Babant, Ventron, Lac Blanc, Gérardmer... (skied some of those mid-summer on grass though!)
Similar territory in the Jura...
Maisod, Bellefontaine, Les Rousses...
SW of Grenoble in the Vercors:
Lans-en-Vercors, Autrans, Villard-de-Lans
And then there's the Pyrenees, so much to explore down there, but I've only managed to get to the one:
Luchon (Superbagnères)
In many of the above you can go an entire week without seeing a fellow Brit!

Hi,
I am a newbie just joinned.
Took up the game 6 years ago. I drove every time and recently been doing one resort per day. Wonder how many of you take the car along.
Last Christmas went to Austria first time; one week in Zell am See covering Kaprun, Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Bad Gastein. Then moved to Ski Welt Wider Kaiser comprising Soll, Ellmau, Going, Scheffau, Itter, Hopfgarten and Brixentale which are fully linked. Day trips to Westendorf, Kitzbuhel, St. Johann and Alpbach.
Just came back from France last week. One week in Chamonix valley (Grands Montet/Brevent) but also went to Les Gets, Avoriaz, Les Contamines and Courmayeur. Then stayed 4 nights at Boug St. Maurice visiting Les Arc, La Plagne, Tignes, Valmorel and La Rosiere/Thulie.
Done most of the resorts in French Tarentise. Went as far south a Deux Alpes and L'Alpes D'Heuz, Part of Porte de Soleil, Le Grand Massif (flaine/Morillon/Samoens), Megeve St. Gervais, 5 resorts in Switzerland, 3 in Norway, Are in Sweden, Whistler in Canada and Glenshee/Caingorm of Scotland.
Need to do USA sometime, Italian Dolomite, East Switzerland, a few more Austrians in Tirol/Salzburg and the French/Italian MIlky Way. Came very close to have a go in Tehran but not enough snow.

I cross the ferry from North Shield to Amsterdam. WIth 650 miles I could be in Chamonix in France or Zell am See in Austria. The journey takes about 10 to 11 hours and I usually do a two-week trip booking own accommodations. Most of the resorts can be reached within 10-45 minutes and I can have better choices to eat and shop.
For overseas trips I managed with go with friends' vehicles.
I do see odd UK cars at various resorts. Can't tell if it is cheaper than the arranged holiday as only wife and I go only. Had picked up and returned my brother's family to Geneva airport for the last three years. With own vehicle one can afford to stay off-resort and not hammered by the expensive cost of the accommodation.
One thing for sure our 7-seater Shogun has plenty scope to load up the wines and cheese. UK is permitting 90m litres of red wine per head into the country and most red wine I pick up in French Hypermarket is about one sterling per bottle (Bordeaux!). The North Sea ferry is now selling Spanish wine for less than a sterling per bottle too.

Sounds great Saikee, maybe we'll try it next year. Always thought the crossing expensive though, we've used it before to visit relatives who live in Ijmuiden where the ferry lands.

Helen,
I think I pay about £300 per trip for two of us plus car. Ferry crossing in winter is always low season. I use to finish a working day (leave slightly early) before borading the ferry and have gone to work immediately after returning from a trip. Newcastle/Ijmuiden ferry works for those living in NE.
DFDS, the ferry operator, serves excellent dinner buffet on the ferry and there are cinemas and disco on the ferry too.
We usually drive one day to the resorts (getting late check-in agreed if necessary) but take two days on the return because the ferry departure time. We choose a Geman city to stop over night and there are plenty nice choices along the river Rhine. There is a lot to do if one manages to arrive early in the evening and spending the morning in places like Koblenz, Bonn, Dusseldorf...
