hum3 good to hear you had a great time.
Not too worried about the off piste, but am interested to hear about the WW1 route as I'm interested in doing that. It does sound as though I'll not be able to spend too long in the refuges along the way - did you take much time out or did you just have to keep going to make it in time ?
great also to have eating & drinking recommendations - that can save some of those awkward moments when you walk into an eatery, realise it's just not for you & have to walk out again as if you'd forgotten something !
Thanks for a great report & some really useful information, particularly as I'll also staying at the Pecol ( also via sue aka sueski).

nickH, Re the WW1 route, once we arrived later than expected and at Lagazoui saw the queue for the Hidden Valley, we knew we had a bit on, so we didn't really stop. But as I said, the route is boarder unfriendly which didn't help us.
The section not to underestimate is getting from Armentrolla to Arabba. It's not a straighforward route at all, so have a look beforehand and know where you're going. Make sure you have a bus timetable to get from Malga Cipella to Alleghe as well so you know which bus you need to make the final lift back.
Speak to Sue about the route too, and get her view, but basically get the earliest bus from Pescul to Cinque Torre you can, to get to Lagazoui ASAP. Once in the Hidden Valley, you shouldn't be held up too much by other queues, but that's not to say you won't get caught! If Sue can guide you, so much the better, as she can leave her van at Alleghe, and get you back to Zoldo if it does go wrong.
It is a bit of a mission and a full day skiing! Get the miles in sooner rather than later to avoid the stress, and the potential expensive cab ride home!

thanks hum3, warning duly noted - cannot have cab rides eating into budgets set aside for more important & liquid events.
If it was a mission for you younger & more experienced skiers then I imagine it'll be a challenge for me, particularly as I'll be getting used to my new skis ! Did you check out the ice bar on the fortezza plateau ? suspect I'll need to for a fortifying tonic !
One of the links Luigi gave earlier leads to a printable list of the lifts for the route in both clockwise & anticlockwise directions so I'll be studying it well before I head off. Are the bus timetables available at the tourist office?

nickH, You can pick up a very useful map from the tourist office and some lift stations entitled Giro scustico della << Grande Guerra 1914-18 . This contains a piste map of the route with all lift details in either direction including the connection to Zoldo .

Lotsa snow ... balcony edge sees a good 20cm of fresh powder
Sad thing is I was going to go to cortina today by car (30km one pass) which I am doubting a bit now ... also for it is still snowing and we are not going to see anything.
Yesterday was about the best day we had here the last 2 weeks. SUN and little snowflakes. A wonderful sight and warm.
Any way visibility poor at the moment and it is snowing right now
p.s. about the connections ..... we are in la villa and experienced .... but it takes us quite some time to get to the sella ronde connection point(including the walk to the lift 1 hour and 20 minutes). And we need to really watch the time to get back here since lifts close 16:15 .... however it is not all bad since it just a 25 minute walk from the piste after piz illa

Just got back... A nice slippery drive but ok.
It did not stop snowing until late so quite a pack was added. However temperature rose to above zero halfway along piste.
Sadly tofana was closed but the other part of pocol was nice just the bleus were to slow with this much powder and non off-piste snowboards.

Can I help it if they're dotted all around the Dolomiti Superski area?

it was -5 & sunny in arabba this morning. Pistes all in perfect condition, firm and grippy. I'm over Corvara way now. Pistes crispier here than arabba but still good. Off piste still fresh: 30cm soft, perfect north facing, slightest hint of frostiness on top of south facing. Excellent in the trees (via SMS)

The snow's really coming down tonight so if you're sitting there thinking, "should I just pack a bag and rush down overnight to visit admin in Arabba for a bit of fluffy-gnarly action?" the answer is, "yes you should"

It didn' snow all night but it's been on and off all day so there's a good 10-15cm. Just had the lushest run through the trees. Stuff to make the gnarly boys weep. Too good even to stop and take tree porn snaps for sharkymark :sh: (via SMS)

The Dolomites - Just wanted to thank all the guys who have added pics - they bring back so many happy memories of our favourite place to ski - absolutely beautiful. The Hidden Valley...pure magic I can feel myself cruising down for a big grill at Scotoni's Restaurant. All very very special!!

The sun's been out today and when the sun comes out so do the Italians so pistes much firmer and more 'used' but temp is low so north facing off piste still in top condition, south facing a little crustier. (via SMS)

there's not a cloud in the sky and all the sunshine skiers are out. Seen 2 heli pickups and another pair of crossed skis in the last hour. No new snow today but pistes all perfect again. Haven't been off piste yet as I'm riding Storm Infernos today and while the grip and consequent g-forces are thrilling, they punnish swiftly when I ski badly! (via SMS)
