Nadenoodlee, Very true. I was trying to think what motivates me in the gym. Frankly - nothing. I just do it. I don't give it much thought, I just fit it in. At 46, I need to do it to stay fit for skiing and endurance riding, plus it keeps me from getting SAD in January. I suppose that's motivational.
For keeping up the pace then good music helps - I've got stuff like 'The Theme From Rocky' on my i-pod. Is that a better suggestion?
snobunni, Have a look at the booklets 'Matt Roberts' writes. You'll find them on Amazon. They have some really good workouts in there that actually work. For weight training, I meant free weights - bicep curls etc. etc.

Fat people, with a BMI over roughly 25, should not exercise.
Pain indicates the body does not like it.

erica2004, for the gym i have downloaded the 'we know snow' video podcasts, all the cardio machines have ipod connectors on so as i'm working out i get to watch people skiing, constant reminder of one of the reasons i'm doing it
Anyway todays progress is my Firetrap boyfriend cut jeans that i bought in the january sales even tho they were snug now fit with no muffin top and the thighs are actually slouchy/baggy like they are supposed to be . . .

Nadenoodlee, thanx
Also noticed that i walked briskly up the stairs to the 5th floor office i'm in today, carrying my laptop case/papers/files etc and didnt feel like death when i go there (beat the lift too much to the annoyance of the finance director)

beanie1, they are cut baggy but not saggy if that makes sense. Particularly fashionable turned up. Although Harem/ Peg leg (eww VILE) are supposed to be the best shape at the moment 70's is coming back for Spring - WOOOHOO to flares

Nadenoodlee, harem pants are the vilest things i've ever seen! Surely theres something wrong when they dont eve look good on models! To be fair many of the spreads i've seen on springs fashions have not been my thing so i may just stay in until may when i emerge in the new summer trends with my hot new bod like a butterfly from a crysalis lol

I had to google 'harem pants' and them made me think of MC Hammer from the 80s. It wasn't a good look then and I can't see how it would be now...
I can't get into 'boyfriend' jeans either, they just make my huge butt look huger!
I'm too old for fashion anyhoo...

Nadenoodlee, love dresses too and really love Asos had some great stuff off there, it was my very very first internet shopping site all those years ago lol
queen bodecia, i would have paid money to see your face when you saw the harem pants!!! Possibly the most ridiculous fashion trend for a while and yes very MC Hammer but in muted urban colours instead of gold lame or bright patterns. The boyfriend jeans i love though, seem to flatter my butt. And NO you are not too old for anything!!!!!

Me & snobunni went to Pilates on Tuesday. Loads of people there and not as tricky as I thought it would be after having struggled along to my DVD at home. But I couldn't do any of the lying on my side exercises. The instructor was great, really explained the moves as she went along...
Same time, same place next week...

I'm sort of seriously contemplating the couch to 5K program Nadenoodlee recommended (I still can't quite even admit to myself that I am contemplating it ). However I don't have any running shoes. I presume the right footwear is just as important as for skiing? How do you choose? I obviously don't want to spend a fortune if there's any risk I'll give up. Is any running shoe better than a non-running shoe (e.g. tennis)? Is it a case of whatever fits best? FWIW I have a tendency to over-pronate and certainly don't want to do myself a mischief

eng_ch, well I know shoes are VERY important but I think I was just a bit lucky with my trainers. I have Nike Air Max 90's (i think) and they are very comfortable and supportive, they didnt cost the earth either. I think tennis shoes might not be the best idea.

eng_ch,
Although I once ran a half marathon for someone else I'm no big fan of running/joging (prefer to use the bike and let it take the knocks). Someone in the know directed me to a proper shop and they sorted me out with really good running shoes instead of fashion items. As with ski boots - it's worth going to a specialist rather than just a shop.
http://www.therunningadvisor.com/running_shoes.html
this link includes a running shoe selector / finder
http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=481
There must be internet running forms where they talk about gear too.
PS If you do go to a speacialist take your old running shoes (if you have some) - it gives them more info to work with.

Nadenoodlee, its all going well! After 4 weeks of not losing any weight i weighed myself last night to find i have lost 5lbs!!! Yay me!!!
Have also seen the wellbeing adviser at the gym who has set me a more comprehensive exercise program for the gym, its bloomin hard but i guess thats what i need. Also i have been out road running and didnt hate it quite as much as i expected . . . . unfortuntely had an accident with a horse on weds night so currently have some very bruised possibly cracked ribs so have to be very careful what i do for a while now
