Admin,
Would you look at a season long package ie 3 to 6 months of cover. Im struggling to find a good one as im off to Canada next week for the whole winter. Do you know when you will have details?
Any fellow snowheads who have any season cover advice please feel to comment or PM me.
Cheers.

At Cardiff Ski Club we have been impressed by the cover provided by TGIC. So much so that we now provide a link to them through our website www.cardiffskiclub.co.uk One of the important things we were looking for was race cover for our kids going out to race & train over the winter without their parents, which is sometimes difficult & expensive to get.
This company will provide that cover for amateur racing (which actaully covers FIS racing) for kids aged less than 18 if they are going out as part of a training group - and they can increase the number of days cover for those who are going to spend the whole season out training.

The TGIC small print tells me that I would need to pay a guide or instructor to step beyond the piste markers and be insured. Additionally, this policy does not seem to cover luggage en route to your destination, if you drive to resort and overnight. Buy this policy, and take your chances, or unload the car. Snowcard do cover luggage in vehicles en route to destination, and suits me fine.

Just went with Go Insure - £65 for a annual multi trip cover for family. Pretty basic cover as not really bothered about lost luggage, hijack etc - I'm driving. Covers off-piste, but excludes areas considered to be unsafe by resort

Boris, Go also clami to cover piste closure, but only actually do so if there is no other resort within reach.
If you manage to find somewhere else to ski, they will not cover you for the cost of getting there, as I found out the hard way last year.
They are cheap, but will wriggle out of anything they possibly can.

so has anything happened with Snowhead insurance? I need to renew my annual policy and am looking for a good policy.
I had a fall in January and had to make a claim...it was ok, but not perfect and i wouldn't want to get it wrong this time. Response and claims handling is more important than cost.

alex_heney, yes agreed on piste closure, often the case I've seen, but luckily not been affected by that. Main reason for going with Go is the off-piste cover - I have this dread of falling over while taking a photo etc the other side of the piste markers and not being rescued!

Boris, There are not all that many now which don't include off-pite, but they do vary wildly in the restrictions - some require a guide, others just say you can't go in areas the resort says are off-limits, with every possibility in between.
That is indeed one of the things where Go have fewer restrictions than some.

admin, any news? I thought I had already renewed my annual, but have just discovered, on checking the documents, that I hadn't. So maybe the snowheads version would be better. Where do things stand now, and what options are available? Many thanks.

I noticed that (on travel supermarket.com) annual multi-trip cover with 21 days skiing was cheeper that a single trip policy of 14 days. Guess which I chose. Unfortunately (or rather fortunately) I shall be skiing for 28 days this season and I couldn't see a policy that covered that many ski days. If nothing happens on my first holiday, then no-one's the wiser.
It's a bit like my car insurance with Privilege - Third party fire and theft was MORE expensive than fully comprehensive - Go figure!!!

skiday, try direct travel - the annual premier policy has good cover for skiing including off piste, you can make as many trips as you want as long as no single trip exceeds 17 days

To me the No1 thing I want to know is will they payout or try every trick in the book to avoid it. So I would like to see stats for No claims settled / rejected on the 1st , 2nd then appeal!
I had a very bad experience with travel insurance when my father died and although I got the payout for my mum it took some hard graft. The thing that upset me most was we were 100% correct and honest and had declared all preexisting health accurately but they still tried it on.
I have gone with Dogtag as I have heard good things or should I say not many bad things. I accept that you need to pay a reasonable amount for quality insurance.

This is a key point. I just paid £140 for an annual ski club insurance - plus membership which I wouldn't otherwise have paid. But needed unlimited winter sports, off piste without conditions (I don't do much) and 60 day trip lengths. Couldn't find that combination anywhere else. You do get what you pay for with insurance, I think (unlike ski jackets!). When we had a claim in the past, with Snowcard, they were brilliant - I would have stayed with them, but they don't do an unlimited wintersports/60day trip combo. It would be unreasonable to expect a policy limited to 17 days wintersports per year (which quite a few annual policies are) to cost the same as one which covers you for months.

Just reading the small print of Direct Travel insurance and noticed Freestyle / ski jumping is exlcuded. I assume this means anyone venturing into the park / building a kicker by the side of the piste won't be covered. Worth looking in to, as I suspect way more "recereational" skiers these days will be messing about in the park than will be race training / racing, which is covered.

admin, You are too slow! I am going to get my insurance from SnowCard.
One addition to your insurance is to have a clear option for those with any form of mental disability or on any form of psychotropic medication. We are going on holiday with a friend who has certain issues and insurance is always difficult for him.

I have just bought annual family multitrip insurance from Direct travel- £68 Europe wide - a bargain- covers off piste and when I claimed with them several years ago following a dislocated shoulder off piste (only just) very helpful- as I had an E111 they reduced the excess to nil!
I had tried to renew our SCGB insurance about 4-5 times but- on various occassions their computer was down (they promised to phone back but didn't) rang in office hours- got answer phone- left contact details- no reply, got thorough to a human - who ended up like the Little Britain 'computer says no sketch'- ended phone call after asking her to discuss our call with a supervisor and for someone else- not her to ring us- no reply.
Direct travel was a refreshing change.
We will also get Carre Neige and take out our european health cards.
What I want from insurance;
ski cover on and off piste with no restrictions on the wording at all -search and rescue etc.
24 hr UK based call centre to handel emergencies
easy to take out- 24 hr call centre- to a human- not internet based
cancellation cover - with a large excess
medical cover- including preexisting medical conditions for which there has been no treatment/follow up for x years
equipment cover up to £3000 (but with a £500 excess)
some sort of reduction if I have Carre Neige- which would also cover SAR world wide I think
ditto for european health card
What I don't want;
a low excess- I only really want insurance for what I can't afford to cover for myself- and I don't want to risk share with lots of people who make fraudulent claims (which was rumored to be a problem with the BMC insurance about 20yrs back- when several of my student colleagues made claims for mountains of gear lost or stolen in Chamonix)
'free' gifts- luggage tags and crap like that

Guys, be patient with me.
Need insurance for 5 days skiing single trip - no off piste, not taking own equipment (hiring at resort).
Looked at BMC and Dogtag but both would be about £50 (have to pay membership of BMC first). This seems a touch steep. Can anyone advise a better option for my specific requirement.
Bit confused by "winter sports cover" - is that for own equipment? This seems to rack the price up.
Cheers

Tim Sawyer,
I just bought an InsureandGo policy via travelinsurance.co.uk. I have standard insurance for travel/bagages etc..so only really wanted cover to get off the mountain. With that in mind I chose their bronze package for 6 days..Cost me £13....
Bearing in mind that I am a beginner boarder and won't need off-piste cover this time around, I figured that it should be fairly straightforward should I get hurt and would not need the specialist covers of the BMC or SCGB and the likes...

has anyone had to make a claim with the new SCGB insurance policy. I understand that it is the same as the BMC policy, does anyone know if this is correct?

I want everything I might do on snow covered and also cover for other "dangerous" sports such as cycling and sailing, and anything else that might take my fancy on holiday. I don't want to have to think about the insurance implications. That's why I've gone for the SCGB cover.

FWIW, the policy offered by SCGB to cover ski racing (my son, not me) for a few days was the cheapest I could find.
