Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Megamum, you seem to be looking for things to worry about. What's 'necessary' about a whistle, a torch. an ID card and a space blanket? You're on the easy pistes in a managed resort, not half way up Everest.

Mrs FtS had a fall in Serre Chevakier manmy moons ago. She was wearing a "belly" bag containing a small camera. The fall onto her front squashed the bag into her stomach and her pancreas against (i think) her spine. 1 week in hospital waiting to see if the pancreas recovered, it did.

ahh the joys of lots of clobber.. when its cold earlier in the season i carry a rucksack for some extra jumpers for other peopl, and all the cr.p goes in there, suncream , camera, lock, goggles etc wifes specs blah etc to be honest i'd be quite happy landing on that rather than my back if you make sure all the soft stuff is on your side of the bag.. the only problem i have ever enccountered is making sure you get your head out of the way of the safety bar if someone pulls it down before you get set .. on those hot april days its money mobile and camera in pocket and thats it !

Frosty the Snowman, crumbs - thats a scary story. I did notice (apart from mrs FtS feeling sick) that you had no calamities on your last trip. we had sunstroke - but that's all - phew...

Lizzard, I have those recco things in every conceivable pocket in my kids ski kit - plus boots etc., as they ski 99% per year on the dry slope mr.rpft thinks this is v.amusing - dendix avalanches etc.,

CANV CANVINGTON, do you hire your sherpering services out?

rpft, Mr L did the avalanche awareness course at 2Alpes this season, and the head of piste security confirmed what we've always suspected - those Recco widgets make it a bit easier for them to find a corpse, but that's it.

BTW, for anyone who speaks reasonable French, that avalanche course is well worth doing - an evening lecture about snow and what it does, followed by a morning messing with the transceivers and other equipment, then an afternoon of off-piste guided skiing/boarding. All free.

Lizzard, That was what the guys running the avalanchecourse t the EoSB said too: lets you have a funeral before the spring. Remember you've got 15 min to find the body otherwise they've basically had it.

Re bags: If I'm having a piste day then I take a camelback style bag with water, some food and suncream in it. Camera etc. goes in pockets. If it's cold a fleece, neckwarmer and innergloves find their way into something too. This bag is very small and flat/high up my back so I don't need to take it off.

However, if there's more going on then I have to add a shovel/probe and maybe (although hopefully never again) snowshoes which means I not only need a bigger sack but I need to be able to fix my board to it too. I've discovered that I need a new bag for this as my climbing one is too big and doesn't have the neccesary attachments.

I'm puzzled by skiers with bags, what exactly is in them? Why do you need so much stuff or is it your normal shoes in there?

For me, I have a camelback type water container, a spare jumper (although I've hardly ever got cold enough to want it), camera, wallet, spare goggles and gloves (in case I drop one from the chairlift), suncream and chapstick. Sometimes snack food for lunch.

The main reason it has to be a backpack rather than a bumbag is the water container, although previously when I have tried using a hbumbag instead, I found it actually felt more awkward to me.

alex_heney, it takes all of five seconds. Stop being such an old woman.

But why take 5 seconds when there is no need?

If it were a fatter pack, so that I felt it pushing me forward in the seat I might bother, but I just don;t see any point with the one I have.

no way .. outside of the missus and kids i have a strict 'no i aint putting that in my rucksack' policy.

 You know it makes sense.

As for carrying stuff on the slopes, if you don't carry a whole lot get a jacket that has a big "map" pocket. I have an old Phoenix jacket that's just done it's 11th season and remains my jacket of choice due to it's pocket configuration. In fact it's so old that colour pattern was back in fashion the last couple of years! Cool

I can get goggles, hat, face mask in there, plus a bottle of water, it has 2 other chest pockets and 2 normal pockets and a couple of inside pockets. Disadvantage is that when stuffed to the maximum extent you look like the michelin man, but avoids faffing around with bags etc.

If you do want a bag but don't need a large one, take a look at some of the Cammel back bags, some models have a reasonable bit of space for stuffing bits and bobs, means you've always got a drink at hand and they're not as bulky as a bigger backback or as flappy as a larger mostly empty sack, and are slimmer so don't take up as much space on chairs. Incidently one reason why I find chairlifts to be a bloody faff compared to surface lifts, give me a fast t-bar or poma anyday.

Hi all, I know this post has moved on but I thought I'd let you know that Alexander (the origonal lift diver - see post one) has contacted me to let me know he was OK. Apart from some hefty bruising he says he got down the chair lift to base station and was skidooed by piste patrol the rest of the way to base station.

So (i) He was OK, (ii) he did receive treatment, (iii) he feels like a "plank" - lucky geezer!!!! Very Happy

debbi, You're sure it was a horrendous drop? The one I we saw unbuckled his backpack (once supported by the lifty) and dropped to the piste with no real danger of hurting himself. The chair itself was a good 10ft from the ground, but because the twatticus was adangle he was much closer.

...it may be a fairly common occurrence... Shocked

damn some of you take a lot onto the mountain. I take cigarettes, rolling papers, weed and an mp3 player. Some days I have to take a bag but I normally take it off and lock it to something that isn't going to move, like a skier.

Mr Lizzard, it was the Thuit chair lift and that has only some netting over a huge gulley at the top, i remember it was nasty cos i dropped off just after to get the powder and it was STEEP. So if that wasnt the lift you saw it on there were 2 twaticus boarders in LDA this year then Razz

Lizzard, PMSL Laughing I suppose the encyclopedia could be used to make a kicker of some sorts, the kicker of knowledge.

My brother takes waterproof matches and all sorts of crap, I'll never understand it all. I see these touring skiers every morning with what must be 80 kilos of shoite on their backs. At a push you need a bottle of coke and a ham sandwich.

Has anyone changed their mind about keeping their backpack on?
