snowangel., maybe, maybe not, they're ususally fairly reliable reports though from past experience. It certainly looks white at Casse de Beouf and Grand-Alpes. Like you say, hard to judge, I only have the webcam pics,a the official snow report. Out there to see for myself soon.

Helen Beaumont, i know what you mean, its hard to judge from here and i look at the bloody mountain everyday. It LOOKS great, and the tops look amazing but i just keep being told its not as good as we think.
I wish i could go up there and no for certain but unfortunatley i'm not that lucky! I just have to go on what others that are that lucky have told me.
fingers crossed they're all wrong and we'll all be flying down them sloaps by this time next week!

Chris O'Loughlin , we're in Villeneuve I think!! Staying at the Residence L'Alpaga. We arrive early/mid afternoon on the 24th. NOt got a car.
You differ from SnowAngel who would book!!
snowangel., Thanks. So what's the crack with la Grotte then - how do we go about booking - do they have a website?

dandtd, la grotte will be a fun filled seasonairs christmas dinner. If you want sit down and sensible it might not be the place to book! I think you would need to pop in on the 24th, but i'll ask my other half to find out for sure as he works there as one of the cheffs (hence it is where i will be spending christmas dinner!) All the locals tend to go (english locals) and lots of seasonairs!
The other option would be to check out places when you get there. If your in villeneuve there are lots and lots of lovely resteraunts. La moroc is a very good choice but you definately have to book for that. You can also get good food at Mojo's or Le petit pont. I'm just not sure about booking for christmas but i can look up there numbers if you like so you can call them

dandtd, i've just been chatting with the owners of Mojo's and they said definately book, avoids disapointment! They were fully booked last year
Just let me know what sort of place you want and i can give you the number as i probably have it and its no bother.

snowangel., Thanks a lot - I'll have to ask my travelling companions but as far as I'm concerned i just want somewhere to have something to eat and a wee drink or five. been 20 year s since i've been sking so not sure what a seasonair is but i can guess.
bntw there seems to be a new picture on http://www.serre-chevalier.com/en/hiver/plus/visites.html which I'm assuming is this year. Looks good.

dandtd,
Snowangle has kindly filled in most of the details.
Ski resorts are not usually that busy on Christmas day, continental skiers tend to start to arrive on 26 & 27 Dec, and New Year week is very busy if snow conditions are OK. Businesses tend to treat Christmas Day as any other day in the ski season, ie they do not shut because it is Christmas day, nor do they put up their prices (unlike the UK). There are plenty of resturants in Villeneuve but the place is very spread out, there are many in the Old High St, which is across the big main road (then across the river) on the opposite side to the ski area. Suggest you book after you have arrived it should not be a problem.
If you have not skied for 20 years you need to consider careful where you ski the 1st day. Suggest you take the very old aravet bubble up, there is a good nurery area to practice on at the top of it.
Have a great holiday, provide they do not get strong gale force winds, there should be some good skiing available at altitude.

snowangel., yes off-piste is the saving grace at present. The pistes are ok at the top but towards the mid point snow cover is minimal. Nothing is open below mid point. Although there has been light snow this morning it wasn't enough to have an impact. I would say that if there is no more snow before Christmas it will be rubbish during the busy new year week. Go on Kim, get naked and dance.

snowangel., there is a red Fiat stuck on the Mickey. I think they will need a Piste Basher to get it out.
Conditions on the mountain were slightly improved this morning. An estimated 5cm of snow has helped out a little.

shellthecobbler, it's beautiful from mid station upwards. Due to low volume of people the pistes are not being damaged. No snow forecast in the next six days but there is a good plenty of spare at the side of the pistes which the bashers could use. Very cold even when sunny so nothings melting and the snow makers have been busy. No need to worry just yet.

The hoards have arrived and there must be a lot of snow chasers 'cause it seems busier than usual. 10 minute queues at the lifts and pistes full of people skier faster than their abilites. The piste snow is good but off piste is very frozen and its not always possible to break through the crust. No fresh left anywhere (without hiking). I'm looking forward to the end of next week when it will be empty and new snow should have materialised.

Helen Beaumont, Just returned from our first holiday ever in Serre Chevalier, staying at Hotel Plein Sud. According to the local press Serre Chevalier has some of the best ski-ing in the area, although there are a few worn patches appearing on some pistes.
Only the highest pistes on the Briancon sector are open and there are long queues for the button lifts. These are best accessed by the chair lift from Chantemerle
For Chantemerle there is good ski-ing from the Grande Serre 6 man chair lift above the middle gondola station and the "black" Luc Alphand run to resort is due to be opened this weekend.
For Villeneuve some runs back to resort are open. Most pistes in the Clot Gauthier region are in reasonable condition with good ski-ing possible - some rocky parts and loose stones to be avoided at the bottom of Clot Gauthier and the end of the long Cucamel runs.
For Le Monetier there was some of the best ski conditions in the area - we greatly enjoyed the Red Yret run where conditions are nearly perfect. If you are staying in Chantemerle or Villeneuve personally I would use the excellent "inc. in sk-pass" bus service to return home as the usual Cucamel piste for the return to Chantemerle and Villeneuve is quite stoney at the lower levels
Considering the general snow conditions in the Alps at the moment, Serre Chevalier is in pretty good shape.
Helen I understand now why you love the place. We spent Xmas in Serre Che as our daughter is a ski-rep in Villeneuve this year. We hope to return next year.

DAVID SNELL, hello david, I hope your wife is feeling better. I am the english waitress who looked after you in the mornings! Glad you had a good time, see you again next year!
went up this morning. conditions are still very good. only pists suffering that i discovered are the south side of the clot gautier and its just in a few places.
Not too busy before 11.30.
I rode the luc home, it was closed and so very very nice.
still the forecast snow is needed and lets hope that the temps and a degree or 4 lower than expected so it snows and not rains!
