@Perty, No, I'm staying at home. It would be sad to see everyone else having fun and being able to ski. nbt is trying to sort out a trip for himself later this season, when I'm more able to look after myself (still can't so some basic things eg washing up the dishes).

@mountainaddict, Well done to Mrs. MA. I too miss mtbiking, being out on our tandem, hill walking and of course skiing. We must all help each other along and be encouraging on this great thread.

After a week of feeling little or no pain, I've been feeling pretty achy yesterday and today-enough to take some paracetamol. Hopefully it's just because I've been doing some different exercises-and not because I've overdone it-though I may have got a bit enthusiastic with a resistance band exercise a couple of days ago. On the upside I drove today for the first time in nearly a week and things have definitely improved in terms of pain on a specific movement changing down gears. I'm going to take it easy on the exercise front for a couple of days.

Can now lift my arm to horizontal when standing but shoulder doesn’t catch, so doesn’t stay up. So I can swing my arm up but it will come come straight back down. X-ray again on Thursday and anticipating will get clearance for proper physio. Next Saturday is 6 weeks since the accident. While I can lift arm straight standing, can’t do it sat down. Did anyone else have similar issues.

@dan100, could be that when standing you unconsciously swing the body, where you can't when sitting

Definitely some body momentum at this stage. Hands up I’m impatient but I had how’s I would be able to drive next week

@dan100, I think it was the same for me. Lifting my arm above horizontal was definitely a struggle sitting down. I did drive a couple of miles at week 6+2 days. Automatic. It was hard to get my arm up to the start button at the top left of the dashboard, so I used my right hand. Holding the steering wheel, I had to creep my fingers around it. Things were definitely easier about 10 days later. Lack of strength seemed to be the main issue at the time. It will come though. Must dash- have to go and do my exercises!

@dan100, I remembered after my earlier post that there was definitely a point where the physio could see that I was raising my arm to the side to horizontal , but the “hinge” in my shoulder wasn’t really flexing, so in effect the top of my arm/ball joint and shoulder were moving together. He manipulated it a bit and things improved (then stiffened up!)..I think that’s probably a normal stage- and it was probably around week 6..

Yep that did hurt a lot - it was at that point I rang my don in work and said I’ve got a problem. Whether it put more cracks in bone I can’t say but it didn’t help. . Skied down rest of palafour after second fall. It was the track behind the hut on palafour. Would have been better walking to main piste after first fall rather than snow plough the narrow track.

This was an issue for me to. My physio worked at it and got me to realise what was happening so that when I did my exercises I made a conscious effort to keep the shoulder down and try and raise the arm only

You know it makes sense.

Yeah…I’m not sure if I could have just changed what I was doing by thinking about it, there was a physical block too. At one point he placed his hand on my shoulder to hold it flat and steady while I lifted my arm to the side. I also recall reaching over to the end of my shoulder with my good hand and holding my shoulder down while I SLOWLY raised my arm. I also pushing my fingertips into the end where I could feel the softer tissue and feeling where the flex should be. The latter wasnt a physio led thing, but it helped me understand what was going on and feel if I was getting it moving. It was a slow process. FWIW I did wonder if I’d ever get my arm above horizontal!

Really good info that @Perty,
This thread has inspired me to get back into more conditioning.
I thought the recovery was done, but it's not. Back on the strengthening, and stretching. Realized it's adequate, but no where near 100%
Some aches after 3 days on it, but all good

My physio session didn't go as well as expected, in that I haven't improved. She's given me the same exercises but I do them in a different way. She manipulated and massaged the shoulder which has definitely released muscle tension (this is good). I'm to do all exercises very slowly and not lift anything at all (was doing a few things, eg lifting a porridge bowl to the table.
Today is fracture clinic. Let's hope the break has mended well.
What exercise is everyone doing? I've been gently spinning on a turbo bike (25mins) and going for a slight hilly walk almost every day (45mins).
@dan100, I too do not know how on earth you skied at all after your awful accident. Mind you the 'body bag' wasn't much better

@Mrs NBT, Sorry to hear that. How did fracture clinic go? Perhaps it's too tempting to make direct comparisons between everyone's situation. We all did something slightly different to ourselves (Frosty TSM wins the "most spectacular" prize ) which must have an impact on how and when we recover. I am now "on my own" regarding exercises and trying to implement everything suggested at my session in the UK last week. I am sure I am still making progress-but it's less obvious.
I was walking the dog cautiously -no styles and avoiding slippery mud -before Christmas. Once in France from Boxing day I walked loads-I averaged about 5 miles per day (on some days more, and 3 times a week it was involved my 2km walk to physio and back). I had some really really good crampons for the snow and ice, so after a couple of walks I realised I didn't need a walking pole and I could manage the dog on a lead. To start with it was a bit trickier as I wanted to carry a few bits and bobs, including the walking pole in a tiny backpack, which I slung around my neck and underarm on my good side, but towards the end I could actually put the back pack on. I confess, despite not skiing, I really enjoyed myself-and the dog (Spud the rough coated Jack Russell) had a great time. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C1zLkzBt_X9/

Perty - you seem to be doing well and getting some exercise.
Fracture clinic went well thank you. The Specialist seems pleased that everything is as it should be. I actually got a good 15 minute session with an nhs physiotherapist, this was very good, as I can now push myself more as my break is virtually healed. Also our local hospital has a hydrotherapy pool and I've got a few sessions booked in 3 weeks. This has to be from recommendation as they need to make sure the patient is the type that will definitely benefit from hydrotherapy. I'm still very down and need to keep telling myself this isn't forever.

So drove for the first time today. Little uncomfortable but fine but drove on the basis I felt comfortable I could control the car in an emergency. Ironically I was driving for an X-ray in Cardiff as I turned up yesterday evening for a prearranged X-ray before meeting with consultant only to find out that X-ray was shut all day for servicing. Not great from Spire Hospital. Did mean that the meeting with consultant was a little pointless as all he could say it was it seems ok but I can’t say for certain without the X-ray. Physio proper starts Monday.

@dan100, That’s annoying.
I’ve not had an x-ray since before Christmas (just short of 3 weeks), though I should have had one on 11th Jan, I cancelled because I didn’t want to come back from France for it and the physio in France was so good. I can tell it’s basically mended (bit late if it isn’t!)
11 week anniversary of my accident tomorrow. I probably went a bit OTT with exercises again yesterday and ache a bit. Strength is returning, but my biggest issue at the moment is what I now know to be “exterior rotation” and getting my hand up behind my back towards my shoulder blades. The only exercise I have for that directly is using a pole behind my back and grasping it with my bad arm behind me in the small of my back and with my good hand from above, pulling up gently to itry increase the range. I’m not making much improvement. This is where hands on 3 x physio and advice would be really welcome.
@Frosty the Snowman, Thinking back, I’d be interested to know what your range of movement was like at the 11-12 week mark and what changed in the 2-3 weeks after.

Bit more of an essential move if female. Even though I can see progress in last week it’s so frustrating the range of movement you lose in 3-4 weeks of your arm in a sling.

I now have the same movement up my back with both hands.

@dan100, good news. Luckily 2020 is so long ago that I can’t remember the details but photos show that I was able to shave after 4 weeks even though I was still having to sleep sitting up.
I was diligent with the rehab exercises but still needed a cortisone jab to relieve a frozen shoulder later that year, luckily one of the doctors at my local surgery is good at that. I seem to remember one of the exercises involved walking my fingers up a wall to increase RoM.

@dan100, that is good news. It’s taken a long time for you to get the all clear for physio, but it sounds like you’ve regained a decent amount of movement without it.

A little update from me! 4 weeks since fracture (humeral shaft, just below the shoulder) & 3 weeks since Cardiff fracture clinic put me in a Clasby brace. Whilst that initially put the bone into perfect alignment, it has kept hinging out of alignment! Latest x-ray on Monday shows that whilst still not perfectly aligned, it’s at an angle that shouldn’t provide any functional problems once healed! Pain has been very manageable but the swelling in the whole of my arm, hand & fingers has been most frustrating! Some areas of hypersensitivity under the brace has had me whincing but I’m having weekly skins checks with the nurses to make sure that the skin keeps intact! Another x-ray planned in 3 weeks. March skiing cancelled & also advised that I won’t be doing a 10K Funrun in April or a 5K in May!

Thank goodness for some humour, we all need it.
@Scarletgirl, when I had your injury (10 years ago), I too had the 'sausage fingers' for quite a while, also bruising for many weeks after, which I've still got with this recent injury.
@dan100, You are doing so well. I'm at the same 'time stage' as you, but I can only hold my arm up horizontally, no higher, also I can't drive yet and not sure when I can work (self employed, so very frustrating).
Yesterday lots of painful physio, with pain staying all day. It's a case of just grinning and bearing it I suppose. I've been told little and often for the exercises.
What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

@Frosty the Snowman, I actually want to see it, but maybe one needs to be in the right mood first.
@Scarletgirl, I’m surprised about the 5k run in May being off the agenda. Assuming you are physically fit anyway, but you can’t train much, what’s the reason other than being ultra cautious? (Yours truly is hoping to ski a bit in just over 2 weeks-week 14 post accident, though I’ll only know if I’ll feel confident enough when I get there)
