I remember the U.S. parallel races from the 80's. The Mahre bros were amongst U.S. racers who 'retired' from the World Cup to race in the series, it was seen as a retirement home to ease off from the serious World Cup season. A sort of cash source for the pension!
Not a fan of it in the World Cup programme.

'Park and Pipe' fans might find my interview with GB snowsport athletes Izzy and Zoe Atkin of interest. Izzy won Bronze in Slopestyle at PyeongChang 2018 and younger sister Zoe is a definite podium chance in Ski Half Pipe

Thats why I dont bother watching the parallel races anymore, when you could see the impact of that rule.
World Pro Ski Tour? All held in US, with mainly US skiers? A bit like the baseball “World Series” & NFL’s “World Champions” |
I spent a week in a hospital in Beijing with swine flu whilst on a school trip, sharing a room with an American student. He hadn't even considered the fact that the World Series of baseball didn't involve anyone but the US (and possibly a couple of Canadian teams!?)

Just caught up with the mens racing last night, having already seen the womens race.
It certainly seemed like the red course was much quicker than blue, particularly in comparison to the women's race where it didn't seem to make as much of a difference.
I actually really like the parallel races, but they need to do something to make them more fair, and scrapping the 0.5 second rule has to be looked at. If you fall perhaps they need to punish you by 1 second but for all other scenarios, just keep the clock running. That would make for some really interesting/tight finishes.

Parallel races are boring and unfair. Maybe do a reset or two as the competition unfolds?

While the FIS is struggling with the format of parallel races, the World Pro Ski Tour is growing and organizing parallel races for women for the first time. Mathias Berthold, former racer and coach, thinks in the interview about how the organization of parallel races could - or should - look in the future |
Mathias was a former Austrian WC racer, coach for the German's women team for seven years, during this time three olympic golds were won at the 2010 olympics, he was also head coach for the Austrian men's team until 2014 during which the Austrian men had a nice haul.
In other news Adrien Théaux , the Val Thorens local, and French speed specialist crashed during training on Copper mountain, he fractured his left elbow and his right tibia and ankle in a super-G practice run so will be out for the season. Brice Roger another Frnech speed specialist is also out and missing the Olympics due to an ankle injury.

I see Dave Ryding won his FIS race in Sweden last weekend (as he should), but also that Mia Brookes won the first Snowboard Slopestyle of the season.

Impressive. But why should he have won, was it a lowly ranked field?
I cant find him in the race on the second day, didn’t he compete in that one?

Great result for her on day 2, particularly quick over the first couple of splits.

It was the lowest level of international race but there were some other WC racers in it.
Strange race, the FIS rules have a limit of 140 racers but the bibs go up to 176.

Dave can't make points from a race at that level, he may stop anyone else making points as well.

@rjs, FIS points were awarded do how can't he make points?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@holidayloverxx, Your FIS points are calculated as the average of your best two results. He is currently on 2.91 but the minimum penalty of a FIS race is 23.0 so he can't improve his points even by winning that race.

Anyone had any luck with Eurosport player discounts - it's renewal time, usually there is a black friday deal going on somewhere. Mine renews next week for £39.99 (£19.99 was last years BF deal).
The renewal price seems like it is a bargain compared to the £59.99 option for a new subscriber - though that gets you package with Discovery channel now?
I've turned on the VPN and had a look at the EU prices - €39.99 for the classic EU player package where it hasn't been bundled with Discovery but no deals on the continent either
|
|
|
|
|
|
Nope, nothing yet. That £20 BF deal has run for the last few years. Might be run on the day itself?
Yes apparently you get more with the new subscription even if you dont want it, so you pay more. And I thought bundling was dead.

Mine has run out too. Discovery seems to be adding more adverts too.

@albob, previous experience is you need to have a card that is issued in the country you are purchasing the subscription from.
I tried last year with PayPal, revolut and a euro card issued abroad to purchase via vpn in cheaper EU countries and it didn’t work.
Thanks for sharing though - there is hope that something may come up on Friday!

I can’t see any deals for a UK Eurosport subscription today offered when I log on. If nothing eventuates then I might just do it by month for the skiing season as I’m not too interested in the summer sports it carries.

We were paying £30 Broadband and £14 for Netflix plus the Eurosport subscription so I cancelled the lot and signed up with Sky which was installed today.
The Sky installation engineer just mentioned that anyone with Sky can get Discovery+ for free for the first year if you sign up via the Sky website.
Not sure if that helps anyone as you will have Eurosport already but I think the catch-up options may be better

PS Eurosport on the SkyQ box is excellent !

Just had another look now - seems on the continent at least where I have an EU card issued there is no deal but it's €39.99 for a year - my UK sub renews at £39.99 - so can save £6 - probably not worth all the effort to get a new account up - but the question is will it keep renewing at £39.99?
Also - 7pm this evening the first DH of the season is on, the Men are in Lake Louise with a DH again tomorrow and an SG on Sunday. The ladies are in Killington this weekend - with a GS Saturday and a Slalom Sunday - exciting weekend!
