I must admit to carrying a flask* but I don't count that. I only take an occasional small sip. It's for the taste you see. (Ahem)
* normally Lagavulin, for those who know their whisky.

That seems to be tough stuff to buy at the moment.
They didnt have any (except the double matured sherry version) in
Heathrow and didnt think they would get any for another year or so.
Have they oversold themselves or something?

I'm surprised: I never had any trouble getting it in the past, though sometimes it's the 10 year and sometimes the 15.

PG- yup certainly wove my way down, unfortunately gravity was a little too strong for the upper body to bear, hence the horizontal descent of most of the course!
Talking of whiskies has anyone tried Te Bheag or Poit Dhubh?? Got given some by a friend, no idea where he got it from but it was very good! Otherwise the Balvenie 15yr old goes down very well!

I never ski under the influence- usually even the sight of alcohol during the day is enough to make me very ill. I do all my drinking after I take my ski boots off! and to be honest so did most people I met and skiied with on holiday in March.
Our daily routine was
11am- get up, eat, ski
5pm - finish skiing- go to McDonalds etc
6pm- Sleep
10pm- get up and get ready to go out- commence drinking
10:30pm- go out- drink solidly and constantly until 6/7am
Sleep til 11am and then start again
The only exception to the rule is if I dont have a hangover the next day- then ive been know to drink myself stupid in a mountain bar with my snowboard instructor and we had to walk back down in the dark, leaving our boards there! |
This year skiing holyday dayly routine was:
07:00 am wake up.
07:15 wake up the children
(More often than not, it was the opposite)
08:00 breaakfast
08:30-09:00 Rendez-vous with other componets of the group
Skiing till 16:00-16:15
Have the last drink in some mountain bar
Ski down
17:00-18:00 Children's homework
18:00 Go to the spa, swimming pool, sauna etc.
19:00 Dinner
20:00 till 22:00ish Chat with friends, I drank mineral water and lemon....
22:15-23:00 bed time
Repeat
Routine did not vary much, children or not, in the past years.
While on the mountain I'm there to ski. Nothing else.
(I'm a bore, I know, but I don't care)

maggi, yes, I do eat, usually a sandwich or a dish of pasta or a cake. This means I stop for about 15-30 minutes. If I have children or family or friends with me, that is.
When alone, even less.
And, I wish I were thin, as it is, I'm not.
170-175 cm x 72-75 kg
I'm never sure how tall (or better, short) I am, thus the 5 cm tolerance..ehe

I've known it take 30 mins for them to bring the bill. I keep saying we should just get up and go, they'd bring it soon enough then. That can happen in any country, though.

Maggi, that said, Easiski and I did have to wait a helluva long time in La Notte restaurant in Bourg St Maurice the other night... the owner seemed to have laid off all his seasonal staff and was the only one serving a packed restaurant. Good meal though, made up for the wait...

As Martin(?) Sheen said in Apocalypse Now!, "I don't see any bar".
Yes, we've been to the till or wherever sometimes, but it's not so easy in some restaurants. Also, if there's a load of you paying, it's a bit difficult with say eight of you all standing round it sorting out whether to pay £13.60 each and leave a tip or round it up to whatever each, especially if the alcohol content of the meal was large enough....you get the idea.

How on earth can anyone get trashed in 1 hour unless the "or so" means hours.
My observations are that very few drink much at all whilst skiing.
On earlier questions on the boiling out of alcohol with vin chaud, try a couple of large ones and then answer.
Hic!

The worst (or best) place for skiing under the influence is St A after leaving either the Moosewhirt or the Krazy Kangaru, that is the only time I have ever done it.
In April I witnessed people skiing home at about 8.00pm in deep slush.

Picky but does Vin Chaud count as alcoholic ? Thought it all boiled off at 78C leaving just a hot drink with no inebriating effects. |
What an interesting suggestion. I was convinced I got pleasantly merry on Vin Chaud, but was this just placebo?
Definitely needs some thought.
1. Boiling point falls with altitude due to reduction in atmospheric pressure. So what is the boiling point of water at 2000m? Answer: 93.4C
2. Vin Chaud is not stored in open containers bubbling away, but in closed containers which will reduce the loss of alcohol
3. Even at 93.4C, not all the alcohol would evaporate off immediately, in the same way the water does not boil off immediately either, but it would be disappearing faster than the water
4. But Vin Chaud is not stored at 93.4C as this temperature would cause severe injury .
Points 1 – 4 are facts. Now comes pure conjecture:
Conclusion: Vin Chaud is stored in sealed containers at about 50C: alcohol strength will be less that standard red wine (11%), but still more than beer (5%). A couple of Vin Chauds can definiitely an old guy pleasantly merry.
There is probably a proper scientist out there who will tell me I am talking rubbish.

exactly Jonim, it's not boiled only simmered for a few hours in a sealed container and then kept "warm", usually in one of those big kettle urns you see at tea time in cricket matches. Therefore there's not much loss in volume let alone alcohol. Not quite sure why a couple of vin chauds make you feel pished quite quickly though...........maybe just all the fresh air and a day of canning it on the slopes..?
|
|
|
|
|
You know it makes sense.
|
Jonpim, the alcohol will not boil off because ethanol and water form an azeotropic mixture. This fascinating site is worth a visit
