Still got our gas fire on here at night. I was rather hoping that summer would start soon !
Only another 6 and a half months until the decent conditions arrive

Just over two weeks of meteorological summer left.
Chances of La Niña continue to weaken (see CFS at top of page 1). At present looks like neutral or perhaps weak La Niña.

Some more unsettled weather heading to the Austrian Alps this Sunday could see the snow line briefly fall to 2200m.

Walking around the forest of bowland I've noticed some of the trees are particularly laden with berries this year, maybe a good sign or old old wives tale?

As I remember this guy did a pretty accurate prediction for Winter 2015/2016 last year. Currently he's predicting mild autumn in UK but colder in mainland Europe (Alp region, Central and Eastern Europe).
http://www.gavsweathervids.com/autumn-2016-forecast.php
Starting from september, he will do weekly predictions for winter 2016/2017.

@matejp, yep Gav is good, though he would also be quick to caution about the accuracy of long term forecasts (his own included!).

Heat alert tomorrow for London. Meanwhile the northern half of the UK forecast to only reach 18c

The Great Lakes are very warm right now.
Often, but not always, means a snowy Northeast US Winter. Cold winds hit warmer water:

Interesting look back over last season in Switzerland by SLF (in German or French).
Familiar story of the exceptionally dry and warm start followed by heavy snowfall in the west in particular in January although marred by a couple of warm rainy incursions and finishing with a cold and snowy end to spring.
Persistent weak layer set early in the season subsequently caused problems when the heavy snow arrived.

Good grief 33.9C in Kent yesterday (93F !). That's about 14 degrees warmer than here in North Yorkshire !
Would be nice to repeat that this winter.

ZAMG look back on summer in Austria.
- 11th warmest on record.
- Though clearly not as warm as the extremes of last year.
- Also the 15th wettest on record.
- Notable for the very heavy rainfall over short periods of time.

Meanwhile Sturm and Kürbisse are appearing in the markets, so although it doesn't feel like it, Autumn is not far away!

@Peter S,
no not really , but considering that nearly every month seems to bring above average temps I'm not surprised .
However I'd take last winter again , pretty good where I go in France from mid Jan onwards

@Peter S, Chin up, chest out, stiff upper lip and all that! Nobody is nailing their colours to any masts yet. Winter is miles out and as @Noza says over and over... don't put your faith in anything further than seven days out!

Brief cold spell coming to the eastern Alps over the next two days bringing the current balmy spell to an end. Temperatures in Austria look like dipping by 10C and that could bring snow down to 2500m in Hintertux (10-20cm) along with some strong winds.

@Jonpim, I wasn't referring to the end of the month.
Here's this morning's GFS for Chamonix showing a dip beneath average as we go into the second half of the month in contrast to the current warm temperatures.

Looking at the chart a couple of posts above it does look like at least a few days of below average temperatures in parts of the Alps as we go into the second half of September with the snowline dropping beneath 2000m for a bit before warming up again.
|
|
|
|
|
|
ZAMG reporting on the unusually warm September weather. 3.5-4C above the long term average for the first half of the month in Austria which would be on course for the warmest September since records began.
http://www.zamg.ac.at/cms/de/klima/news/bisher-ungewoehnlich-warmer-september
In fact there is some cooler weather on the way over the next week with the snowline around 2500m so fresh snow for glaciers.

Before the proper forecasting starts in earnest, are there any 'Old Man of the Mountain' anecdotal forecasts? You know the ones "I saw a marmot circle the tallest genepy flower three times clockwise at midnight, so it's going to be a bumper year for snow". I quite like those, especially if they're optimistic.
