Will anyone admit to adding any of them to his/her iTunes/iPod playlist? I hereby confess to having added "Hey Baby, Oooh Ahhh", by DJ Oetzi, but only because I happened to see the CD in a charity shop for 50p; also "Atemlos Durch Die Nacht" by Helene Fischer, because I couldn't seem to come to terms with life without it, after hearing it a zillion times a day the season before last.

@AthersT, excellent. Anyway back on topic. Where abouts in Saalbach/Hinterglemm can I listen to this? My kids will hate me

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
@boabski, I have only limited experience, from a week in Saalbach last year, so I am going back in February to do some more research.
I visited the Goassstall in Hinterglemm, where you will hear most of the above, if not all, as well as see live goats kept in the bar (behind plexiglass, the poor things) and witness lots of Germans, Dutch and Scandinavians dancing. I also experienced Bauer's in Saalbach, which has several open air/umbrella bar areas and (I think) has some live music. I didn't stay long there since it was full of middle aged men like me.
I was in the Hinterhagalm on three out of the six late afternoons in Saalbach because in my view it was the best apres ski that I've ever experienced. It's the same live show every single day although the songs are rotated.
Basically there are some old guys up on a balcony who play some singalong tunes which everyone joins in with, then later, the legendary Evi appears who sings some slower numbers and performs her Herzeltanz where she showers red hearts onto the crowd below (which are actually stickers advertising the Hinterhag ). She's been doing this since 1979. You'd think she'd be bored by now, but maybe the money is good.
The bar is crowded but you get served quickly by friendly, efficient staff. It's not cheap, but hey, it's 4.30 and you need a beer, right?
If your kids are small and they can see what's going on, they'll love it. If they are teenagers and they can see what's going on, they'll hate it for being uber-cheesy
Viel Spass!!!

@honved, thanks. Have only managed 1 day skiing in Saalbach a few years ago whilst staying at my sisters place in Zell. Can't wait to do it justice n January.
@boabski, Although I'd like to have seen "Er Hat Ein Knallrotes Gummiboot", "Do You Know The Way to Amarillo", "YMCA", and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" included, I'm well impressed by that otherwise fairly comprehensive list! You're obviously a true aficionado of the genre and should be proud of your accomplishment. Any plans to go on Mastermind - specialist subject, Austrian apres-cheese?
Whilst we're on the subject, I realise that there are probably a fair few regular skiers reading this, who haven't yet been inducted into the parallel universe that is Austrian apres-ski and haven't therefore got the foggiest what we're talking about. They may even think we're being derogatory, rather than paying homage (it's surprising how many people go skiing in Austria and expect to hear the same kind of music that they'd hear in a club or on the radio back home - they just don't get it, they think we've lost our senses, and who can blame them?)
Occasionally we have guests who have always skied in France, or at least who have never experienced Austrian apres-ski, and I've gone from deriving amusement from their looks of bewilderment to relishing the wide-eyed wonder on their faces upon discovering that there exists a form of joyful escapism that they never dreamed existed - like a small child discovering ice cream for the first time. However there's many a slip twixt the cup and the lip, and I've learned that careful induction is needed in order to prevent them from scuttling hurriedly back to their accommodation to read a book, muttering words like "excruciating" and "banal" and "puerile" and that next year will see them returning to Courchevel or Tignes.
Those who would include the Birdie Song or The Smurf Song amongst their Desert Island discs are unlikely to pose a problem - they will be instantly hooked. However anyone whose musical appreciation has progressed beyond nursery rhymes may well find their first Austrian apres-ski exposure a shock to the system. For some the taste may need to be acquired (it may take repeated listenings for an "Ohrwurm" to burrow its way into the ear canal!), so it's important to break them in gently - don't plunge them straight into the Hinterhag Alm! (Let alone upstairs!) It needs to be emphasized, preferably before the holiday starts, that all musical sophistication and pre-conceptions must be set aside; like watching Eurovision it's important to have a completely open mind about the musical standards they will encounter in Austria, where basically anything that has a simple, sing-along chorus - la-la-la or ooh-ooh-ooh included - goes down a storm, especially if it also involves waving your hands in the air.
The other important thing to understand is that the playlist is strictly proscribed - people (many of whom immerse themselves for only a week a year) expect the same songs - most of those listed by Boabski above - to be played repeatedly in every bar they go into; it isn't unusual to walk or ski from one bar to another at apres-ski time and find the same song being played in both. Equally it is entirely normal to hear a song being played and realise that you've already heard it half a dozen times that day. Any attempt at wider-ranging originality is positively discouraged (it's a real achievement for any artist to have their song added to the regular playlist. "Atemlos" by Helene Fischer is one fairly recent example). (I once suggested to the Goassstall that they might consider adding "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy" by the Tams to their playlist - it has a "ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh" bit that struck me as very suitable - but I was wasting my breath.)
We have a good friend, who is a Slovenian keyboard player with his own band. He used to have a residency at the now defunct "Arena" nightclub (now the Pipamex restaurant) in Saalbach, but he now spends much of his time touring Germany. He yearns to play something musically challenging or different, but he says that all the Germans want to hear is "schlager music" - "Living Next Door To Alice (Who The F*ck Is Alice)" is about as sophisticated as it gets.
That's another thing - over there they seem to latch onto certain artists, like Smokie, Sutherland Brothers and Quiver, Tony Christie, Robbie Williams, Brian Adams, AC/DC - often it will be only one song by that artist that has struck a chord with our fellow-Europeans. Be prepared for a blank look if you mention another big song by the same artist, or another artist or band that is even better-known in the UK.
That's enough waffling from me for now - but more on this fascinating topic please!
My name is Bob. I've been an addict since 2003. It was the Eisbar song pumping out full blast at the mooserwirt that started my addiction. I take great comfort in knowing that there are other addicts out there

Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...
My name is Richard, I too am an addict. I dabbled in solden and zell and then came mayrhofen, the elchbar and ice bar at either end of the penkenbahn was where I became hooked! I was warned about it by my brother in law who's been into it for years but as a bit of a music snob didn't see the dangers. The scary thing is I don't want to be rehabilitated. Can't wait till February for our next fix!

@HoneyBunny, The Walleggalm is high above Hinterglemm and from what I gather from @ski for fun above, it's a lunchtime venue. It's huge, with a large terrace to one side and I only discovered the show after finishing my Germknödel and Schiwasser, en route to the loo. We had arrived, eaten lunch, and completely missed the fact a show had started and there was a crowd of folk dancing about round the corner.

@maxima, There's a separate thread for the new link, here: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=2793555&highlight=saalbach#2793555 ....and to answer your question, we're all of the opinion that it will make a big difference to the Ski Circus, with the total km of piste increasing from 200 to 270 this season. I also once heard Fieberbrunn described as "Austria's best-kept secret" on account of its extensive freeride terrain, so the off-piste skiers will be extremely happy. The run down towards Fieberbrunn from the Reiterkogel is graded red, and it's reds and blues once you get over to the other side, so you should be fine. Let us know, by the way, if we can help you with accommodation for a sneaky pre-Christmas visit - we're not going till 19th, so we have a couple of empty apartments till then.

My estimate is that you would want to be a confident intermediate to ski these pistes happily. I know the Reckmoos Süd piste on the Fieberbrunn side and that is quite steep in places (although there is an easier bypass).
I have only walked along the new Vierstadlalm piste on the Saalbach/Hinterglemm side but, to me, that looks quite challenging too.
Should be great, though, for those who like that sort of thing.

@HoneyBunny, and @honved, The Walleggalm specialises in presenting some of Austria's "big apres-ski stars", with regular appearances by the likes of Antonia aus Tirol and Mickie Krause. This happens during the afternoons, and the music can be extremely loud, with a crowd of people all waving their hands in the air, or doing whatever other dance moves they are instructed to do (which they always love). Last time I was in there, I found the food prices to be higher than elsewhere, and I was forced to gulp down my gulasch soup to the accompaniment of drum 'n' bass as quickly as possible, as conversation was impossible. Not really my scene.
By the way, @HoneyBunny, I have a photo of the Angry Birds, posing in front of a large stack of skis outside the Walleggalm. You're conspicuous by your absence, so I guess it was almost certainly the day after you got totally wasted in the Hinterhag Alm and decided not to ski. However you're present in photos taken later on at the Goassstall, so you may have taken the bus to Hinterglemm when you finally dragged yourself out of the sack.

Ah yes, Antonia - once-very-pretty-but-now-aging-woman in a tight dirndl jumps up and down while shouting loudly into a microphone connected to a PA system set to 11, in inverse proportion to any actual musical talent
@ousekjarr, She's 35! (Rather you than me, but full marks for bravery!) Here she is performing probably her best song in what looks uncannily like the Hinterhag Alm.
(You've got to hand it her - she works very hard at the audience participation - and that dirndl must be very cold in early January!)

Hey it takes more than a hangover to stop me skiing! I'd actually caught a virus and had to stay in bed . Luckily the worst passed after a day.

Actually, she's 38...
And I said aging, not haggard old crone - she has lots of energy and is successful at what she does, but I think that the fact that her promo poster uses a 10 year old picture suggests that she's also aware of her career reaching its natural end as it was based almost entirely on looks and cleavage and both are inevitably going to show signs of maturity as time goes on.
We hit the Walleggalm for a lateish lunch on a powder day, and I can testify that eating is not helped by having a banshee accompaniment.
