Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

He may get some ideas, the place is doable by bus, I've used them a few times. If you were based in Flachau you could have 5 great resorts right on your doorstep and perhaps just try one or two long bus runs in the week if you fancied anywhere different.

Cacciatore, they will probably have to travel on separate busses though, those Austrian drivers don´t like squabbling passengers Cool

I am truly sorry for causing this unpleasantness. My use off a rolling eye smilie was not meant to be rude, more of a tut and disappointment. I truly apologise for the wrong selection of smilie. I am a she not a he. And no I have not made up my mind yet despite all this unpleasantness.

We like the ease of ski in/out. We have skied France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Canada, Scotland and Bulgaria. In most places you have to walk to the slopes or get a bus, we just prefer ski in/out (tired old legs).

Hells bells thanks for mentioning serre chevalier, was there in 1996, really liked it, but too many drags and a long walk at the end of the day. (No bus where we stayed) we will return.

In Austria we have skied the ski welt (staying in scheffau), st Anton, and my husband has skied in kitzbuhel. Dare I say it, it's the buses that get on my nerves. That bus between Raus and zurs needs to be seriously looked at, its a disaster of monumental proportions and they could learn something from the bus operators in tignes and val d'isere. My husband said the only thing he didn't like about kitzbuhel was having to get a bus to the slopes.

Avalanche poodle, when you say long bus runs, how long are they?

On the map there seems to be a major road running through the middle of the ski area, is this correct? Somewhere near flachau.

Again, let me apologise, I did not mean to offend anyone and the only smilie I will use in future will be a smilie one.

The motorway runs through flachau winkle, there is a noddy shuttle train bus thing.

As I say, I always hire a car and drive between resorts, furthest ive parked from a lift is 100m, it really is no bother. If you diy it is also cheaper than buying a transfer.

NE1, Schladming (as mentioned in the first reply) would be a good base to give access to a very decent sized ski area (4 interlinked mountains), plus bus options to others. Not sure how pretty it is as I've only ever stayed at Haus, one of the outlying villages near there. I'm no Amade expert, but have been there 3 times.

NE1, The motorway runs alongside Flachau. It connects Flachau to Altenmarkt/Radstadt and Flachauwinkl/Zauchensee on the Post Bus. There are lots of bus stops on the main street in Flachau (parallel to the motorway - which you can't hear by the way) so as long as you stay somewhere near the main street then the walk to the bus stop would be minimal. If you do decide to stay in Flachau you can get to Wagrain/Alpendorf/St Johan by lift - no bus needed; there is a town shuttle bus that runs between the lifts so again you can minimise the the walking. My advice would be to stay somewhere near the main street in Flachau but also near one of the 3 main lifts - I would recommend the Star Jet end (actually in the village), or the Acherjet (there is a ski depot so you can rent a locker and leave skis and boots). The Space Jet lift is as the far end of the village and is a bit for away from restaurants IMHO.

If you like the idea of Flachau I'm happy to advise on the location of individual hotels/apartmetnts

The noddy shuttle train referred to above is a little shuttle between the Flachauwinkl & Zauchensee base lifts - it takes about 30 seconds

NE1, Don't stress about the idiots that have made this thread into a complete farce. I left this forum about 7 years ago because I got fed up with the same nonsense. I've been back a couple of weeks and it's pretty scary to see the same unpleasantness still lingering (all be it from different people). It's a shame that so many people with a passion for something so wonderful as skiing can get so uptight. It's like being in a school playground

NE1, You generally seem to be talking 15 - 20 minutes on the buses for routes that I know, but a lot depends on where you stay and I only know a few routes. If you look at this map of the Flachau region you can see the way that the resorts are linked or close by.

http://skimap.org/data/607/1/1256187734.jpg

I've skied these, plus Schladming / Haus, both are great areas. The Austrian buses seem to be quite efficient, sounds a bit of a cliche though Laughing From what you seem to wish for I would definitely stick to one of the central towns close to the lifts, you can then ski up and over mountains with no need to travel unless you want a day away. If you wanted to get in more resorts which are further outlying then a hire care is much easier. The Super Salzburg pass covers about 44 resorts, the Amade one still really requires three weeks to get around it all.

Don't worry about the threads, people always argue about Austria vs France, it's like two rival football teams. If in doubt add a winky smiley rolling eyes wink

Yes, mine too. My place is in a satellite of Les Saisies and is ski in-out, but not for complete beginners. I would never recommend a beginner to stay here without their own car, because the bus is a pain. It's not that frequent, sometimes it's very busy in school holiday times and this year it's not been reliable - the first bus has sometimes been too late to get people round to ski lessons in the village. And getting a couple of small kids, in ski boots, with all their stuff, up the big steps, is not easy.

I've "done" ski busses in La Rosiere and Alpbach where they were reliable but still a ball-ache. Driving to the slopes, however, with nice big free car parks near the lifts, is no problem at all. I would be very reluctant, these days, to take a ski holiday anywhere where I had to clomp around for buses morning and afternoon.

If you are looking for somewhere "different" there is plenty of ski in/out accommodation at very reasonable prices in the Espace Diamant but I wouldn't recommend it in school holidays because there will be lift queues, sometimes quite big ones (15 minutes sometimes even more). Out of school holidays it is rare not to ski straight on to the lift. Maybe six people ahead of you when it's busy. 185 km of lift linked skiing (and a bus to Les Contamines or Areches Beaufort if that is not enough) and 120km of cross-country. Lots of easy and intermediate skiing, family atmosphere, reasonable prices. Very French and very friendly.

NE1, if it is 1996 since you were last there, most of the drag lifts in Serre Chevalier have been replaced. My apartment is 200m from the ski lift.

NE1, travelling without a TO is easy and gives you far, far, more choice. Only a handful of the hundreds of French and Austrian resorts are served by British TOs and even fewer of the Italian ones.

In Les Saisies there is very nice (high end, not cheap) accommodation available through Peak Retreats who also do packages with Tunnel tickets, though not the full package.

and equally difficult to garner any precise information in response to the OP's query. How much skiing can she access in one place, without having to use ski buses? It's really quite funny that instead of actually answering that simple and predictable question the "locals" are moaning about people going off-topic. And although the OP has been gracious in apologizing if she upset people inadvertently in using the "wrong" smiley (for goodness' sake rolling eyes what will people get upset about next ) they don't appear to be in any hurry to apologise in their turn, kiss and make up, and market their ski area (which I have always thought sounds great).

None of the other 'locals' live in Austria!

At the risk of being villified.........

Done the French 'megas' and ski amade.

In my youth - the French resorts were right for me. Snow sure, good night life, big areas to ski (I could afford 2 week trips then!)

Now, with the family, -Ski Amade wins hands down. Super scenery, very child friendly, much nicer accomodation, and sooooooo much cheaper.

Very Happy
