I'm pleased that wearing a helmet is optional, not compulsory, but I fail to see why people get so aerated about the subject. It all reminds me of the arguments before seat belt wearing was made compulsory in cars back 1983. |
People are aerated about the subject because they don't want it to become compulsory, like that of seatbelt.

Any activity that causes a person to exceed walking pace or to move assisted by some mechanical device tends to draw attention from the scaremongers who try to force the wearing of protective gear but if a person takes part in an activity that their main speed is walking pace but they hurl objects, little is mentioned - eg golf, racquet sports etc and some nasty injuries have been sustained in those events.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

thecramps, No idea what O levels are?? But try applying what you learned. Accidents happen, some people go their whole lives without one others are not so lucky. Deciding to take action that may reduce the impact of a potential accident is common sense. It should always be personal choice for adults, but attempting to dismiss the potential risks involved with the sport or dismissing the extra protection helmets provide is daft

Fattes13, you undermine your own argument. You criticize me for saying "bang on the head" and then quote newtons laws of motion to explain that momemtum is what damages brains necks etc. By your own argument, increasing head weight, by for example, adding a helmet, is a bad idea. As I have said, I wear a helmet, but not for any reason you think I should.

Masque, they know nothing. They should try putting a ski either side of a birch tree. That is a real test!

ITV report on this ...

Worked better for me than the Sky report, though the reporter ignored all negatives of helmets ... and the ongoing fact (as I understand it) that the boom in sales has had not reduced the incidence of serious/fatal head injuries.
Great scary video, though, for those wishing to scare people into buying helmets. |
From the opening lines of the link, I had to wonder would it not be safer to just take the tress out of Hemel?

Actually, a heavier head - helmet - anything - will stop more slowly due to increased momentum. it is the deceleration that damages the brain as the momentum of the brain inside the skull continues as the skull stops. Helmets reduce deceleration by providing a compressible layer & reduce external damage by providing a protective shell.
