nozawaonsen, Today in the Times, Paul Simons, weatherman, alluded to the discovery of a strange pool of warm water off Newfoundland, coupled with heavy snowfall over northern Europe and Asia, blocking off the milder gulf stream air, thus allowing polar air to pour in to the UK. He then goes on to link this to increased polar ice melt and if true, will lead to more regular big freezes in December. Would you concur?

Lots of snow forecast for the French alps today;
Quote: |
Above 800 meters, the amounts will be around 40 to 60 cm in Isere, Savoie and Ain |
.
An avalanche risk of 5/5 has also forecast for this evening.

Worth remembering, it's currently Autumn.

In Dusseldorf at the moment. Completely clear roads this morning, then 5 cm of snow in 2 hours, has eased off but is still coming.

Mr Piehole, I thought the meteorological start of winter was December 1st? If that's right, then it is officially winter now isn't it?

No, it's Autumn.

Technically I think winter starts December 21-22 - ie, winter solstice

Astronomically winter starts on Winter Solstice. 21 December at 1112 this year. Also called the shortest day or midwinter. Meteorlogically winter starts in 01 December. So I guess you can take your pick. Either way 21 December is a good excuse to light a huge bonfire and eat lots of food.

Astronomically wins, surely. Michael Fish can't beat God in an argument.

Mr Piehole, Depends on whether God is a figment of your imagination or not..
nozawaonsen, Hear mention of flights into GVA cancelled at the mo due to snow. Might be an interesting evacuation of 100+ sHs from Tignes tomorrow do you think?

I managed to get on it fine? There was the odd flight cancelled here and there, but no mention of snow being the main effector.

From Geneva airport FB.
Despite snowfall Geneva is open, but other airports are affected. Heavy traffic on the GVA website means it may be easier to get up to date info on the Geneva Airport mobile app.

Ibex, I've not seen the article, but there are certainly links suggested between SSTs (sea surface temperatures) near Newfoundland, autumn snowcover in Eurasia and negative Arctic Oscillation. The latter describes high pressure building to the north disrupting the polar vortex (the low pressure that builds over the Arctic in winter), which tends to force the jet stream further south allowing cold air to drop down across Europe.
Separately there is also research suggesting that lower levels of Arctic sea ice may lead the jet stream to become more meridional (so with a "wavier" pattern) which would mean more frequent blocking (fixed patterns of weather for periods of time). This could increase colder weather patterns for Europe in winter.
If you scroll back through this thread you'll find several articles on these topics.

Jerby, up to Christmas is too far out to tell, but there is more cold weather and snow likely for many.
The meteorology behind the ‘Beast from the East’
Back in the Alps here's Meteo France.
"BEAUFORTAIN-VANOISE-MAURIENNE-HAUTE-TARENTAISE et HAUTE-MAURIENNE
Les chutes de neige prévues sont proches de 50/60cm en 24h avec des vents d'Ouest puis Nord (rafales 80 km/h). Les cumuls précédents étaient proches de 80 à 150cm en 72h de la Maurienne et le Beaufortain. "
- 50/60cm in the next 24 hours in the Beaufortain, Vanoise, Maurienne, Haute Tarentaise and Haute Maurienne.
- Gusts of 80kmh from the west then north.
- Total snowfall over last 3 days, 80-150cm for the Maurienne and Beaufortain.
It adds that large natural avalanches are expected peaking overnight, possibly affecting communications routes, habitations and lifts.
Looking at the GFS further snow looks likely from Sunday night through to early Wednesday across the northern Alps though more focussed on the eastern Alps. A warm up mid month looks likely too, but temperatures look like dropping back below average again shortly afterwards. FI was cold and often snowy.
All in all a lot of snow. Enjoy it if you can!
I'm watching from the sidelines for the next two months whilst recovering from surgery from an early season tumble. Drat (and ouch). Should be back on the road soon...
