Eeyore, I have looked into it. Thomsonfly have dropped the Tuesday flight, but the cost of the flights is already in the region of £150.
That said, the boys are desperate to go again.

Has anyone honestly costed a road trip to Austria.
Twelve seater minibus, hired by the furthest away and pick ups on the way down to the ferry/tunnel shared driving non-stop.
Would be interesting to compare with all the extras the airlines add to the fare, cab from the airport to resort, etc.

I haven't but I intend to as my current plan is a road trip in Austria and the Italian Dolomites for the whole of February. And depending on when this trip is I'd like it to be part of that trip.

Assuming a minibus is anything like a van rental, you'll probably find that 1. there's a mileage limit, beyond which you'll have to pay n pence per mile (may not be a major factor), 2. you have extra hassle sorting out green card business at the rental location (had that with 1 place in Bristol, when we moved a load of stuff when I quit the country), and 3. the ferry ticket is extortionate compared to car+discounts.
Worth pricing up though. Remember to factor in luggage space especially with planks
Dunno If i'd do a whole week, but could be persuaded to gatecrash for a weekend if it's somewhere easily accessible by car (or train). Was gonna do a few weekends either at Zell am Ziller / Mayrhofen again or maybe Wengen (5hr drive after work not much different to flight from UK).

Comparing:
Ryanair 24th Jan - 31st Jan London Stansted - Salzburg with one bag and Ski's £209
BA 24th Jan - 31st Jan London Gatwick - Salzburg £178
Travel from Salzburg to Saalbach and back €100 / 1.23 = £80
Total Ryanair = £289.
Total BA = £258

Frosty the Snowman, So what, we not going to wedding, bring you duvet and pillows to make it more comfortable, if we have full breakdown cover whats the issue?
General Comments
For getting a bunch of people anywhere cost effectively, the LDV Convoy is the minibus to choose. The Convoy uses Ford Transit turbo diesel engines and running gear and as such parts are easy to find and pretty cheap. Don't let the relatively low power output put you off as the engine delivers bundles of torque low down. Although not exactly a boy racer van, it will sit reasonably happy at 70 on the motorways.
Good Points
Space, you can actually stand in it even if your 6'4. Reliable cheap cheerful.
General Comments
Basicaly if your looking at moving 16 people from A to B then this LDV Convoy Mini Bus is what your after, no frills just space. Noisy and its thirsty but what the hell. National car rental/Avis/Burntree all cant be wrong.

is that 353 for minibus/van + driver? or vehicle+12?
from www.onlineconversion.com 30mpg ~= 9.5 l/100km (rounded up), so my fuel calculation came to...
35 * 9.5 * 1.3€ = 432€
belgium is a ripoff for diesel iirc. not sure what price is in germany, but I'm sure petrol was more than €1.50/l (will check on way home)
Depending on route, Austrian tolls and vignette (maut?) need to be added, but that's pocket money in relation to total cost.

I've drove to serre chavalier in a LDV mini bus about 10yrs ago (so it was an old model) with 4 drivers. the resting guys were in sleeping bags across the spare seats, loads of room for kit including a beer run on the way out and back.
Each driver took a 3ish hour stint. I think it took us 18hrs non stop so it was not hard work for the drivers.
Left Thursday evening and was in the bar Friday afternoon ready for first lifts on Saturday.
It does have it's merits as blytht, is pointing out.

I've travelled to the Tarentaise on a variety of coaches, all designed to be comfortable for long overnight journeys. I'm not keen to do that again.
I've never been in a mini-bus that's particularly comfortable.
If I drive to Austria I'll probably take 2 days doing so, stopping at a hotel overnight. But as I'd be planning to stay "local" for a month once I arrive I don't mind spending so much time to get there.

Charlatanefc, I'm not keen on driving either. Besides, can you imagine all 12 people on the bus opting to stay sober and not drink any alcohol on that length of journey so everyone can take their turn driving? It wouldn't happen in practice IMO, it would end up probably 2 or possibly 3 people ending up doing all the driving! £350 for fuel does seem a bit low too andy's calculation of 432 Euros seems more like it. My 42 mpg Renault Clio worked out to be £265 return to get to Tignes so a minibus has got to be a fair bit more to Austria.
Anyhow so the plane option is £100 more we think but is a lot quicker. Where we going then Charlatanefc? Is St Anton any good to you as previously mentioned on the last page as a possible? It's got it all after all. And not as deer as Ischgl.

VolklAttivaS5, actually €432 = £342 from xe.com today
Actually just looked again at blytht's calcs, and see the conversion for €350 to £285, but then £350 used in the final totting up.

What's wrong with Bambi
St Anton and Ischgl are fairly close to each other so getting from one to the other shouldn't be a problem.

Destination? I assume it's Saalbach?
Hotel? Which hotel is recommended?

As I understand it, this is not a snowhead bash, but a group of mates that went on holiday with each other. Perhaps the word BASH should be removed from the title. I believe that the official snowHeads birthday bash will be around the same time. Organising Large groups is difficult and on this holiday last year there were 2 flights and 1 minibus to collate. 5 of us met up for a long weekend with the larger group, but that was arranged seperately. I doubt myself or family will make it next year

Ahh, so you'd rather have a clique than a more open 'join us in Resort X on these dates' trip.
Of course if it turns out that the Vera Lynn Bash clashes with this trip then folks will have a dilemma.
