@OuatteDePhoque, Judging by the amount of French and Swiss cars queuing to get into/through Les Gets on Saturday as we were leaving I'd guess masses of "locals" hoping to enjoy only their second good weekend this year. At 10:00 am the traffic heading up from Taninges was pretty much solid all the way. Pretty much the same as the previous weekend where all 4 lifts in the LG bowl had long queues all day. |
We skiied in LG last weekend and whilst there we saw some queues we never waited more than a couple of minutes. Ranfoilly had a bit of a queue most of the time but by nipping round to the Nauchets side entrance even that wasn’t bad - and the rest of the time we just chose whichever lift didn’t have a queue. Weirdly there always seemed to be one with no wait - one time Grains d’Or would be stacked but Rosta was empty, one run down and it had reversed! But other than one time up Rainfoilly we didn’t wait anywhere all day.

Did a Samoëns 1600 morning, Les Gets afternoon on Saturday. Apart from an expected bottleneck in Chariande Express (I know, wrong thread), I found the pistes weren't that busy on either resort.
The drive morning (really early, damn those kids' races...) and midday (two kids, two resorts) went smoothly.
However the drive back via Cluses was a nightmare - again blaming the kids and a forced stop by Ski Clinique in Cluses.
Second weekend with locals (us included, sorry) invading the pistes!

Doubt they have the space or budget to put in a second top station. I personally like the current config.

@OuatteDePhoque, I think mainly day/week end visitors. We arrived Friday night and there were long queues from Lausanne up the Rhône valley. Skied La Chapelle (both sides) on Saturday and it was pretty quiet. Sunday had a late start but was amazed that I could even get into the PLJ parking at 10.30 and had to park below the dechetterie and walk up.
Today spent a few hours at Braitaz/Torgon before the rain arrived - virtually deserted, don’t think we saw more than 30 people total.
Hammering down with rain this evening, hopefully snow higher and level falling in the night.
Was anyone on the slopes in Avoriaz today? Busy? We’re thinking of heading over tomorrow if the rain stops.

@Ozboy, replacement of Linga sounds good to me.
Bumped into a mate of yours (Steve J) who was out with a friend of mine and had a few runs with him. I hear you’ve been beasting him on the bike!

Copied from elsewhere:
@swskier, apparently the run down Linga is a bit horrid at the moment as it’s all blocked off for the junior worlds - so anti clockwise as @OuatteDePhoque says is probably better.
We skied both sides of the blocked area yesterday. Stay well clear - it is narrow and VERY icy.
So I hear - have a mate with us next weekend keen to do the circuit, but it’ll be anti-clockwise if at all!
Still tricky getting from the top of the Linga Gondola to Echo Alpin alongside the blocked part

We were skiing Avoriaz / Châtel today, no real queues tbh, pistes were relatively chill. Got a tiny bit busy at some bottle necks but otherwise good! Imagine tomorrow might be a bit more busy with new snow and sunshine though (although all much better than Sunday)

Random question - has the Chamossiere freeride area gone? Not sure I've ever really skied it to be honest but seems to have disappeared from the piste map I've got.

Heading out to Avoriaz for this (long) weekend. Looks like the weather will be as mixed as the abilities of our group!
Quite keen to do a loop of the main part of the PDS circuit but as noted above there is junior racing going on over the next week which makes Linga a bad route. Assuming that clockwise is out, what’s the best way to do an anti-clockwise route starting/finishing in Avoriaz? I’m most concerned about the link from Morgins to Chatel - does for example the TSD PDS and TSD Gabelou load in both directions to get across the valley or do you have to ski into Chatel and pick up a bus to Linga cable car?
Thanks

Morgins to Chatel: Corbeau chair up then ski down to the Culet button - that takes you to near the top of the Chalet Neuf drags. Keep bearing left and you’ll pop over the ridge into the Super Chatel area. PdS and Gabelou both work in both directions, ski down to the Linga bubble, down to Echo Alpin and head back.
Going anti-clockwise, if you want to ski most of the Champery/Morgins area I think you have to use a couple of drags (a button and a t-bar) before skiing down into Morgins - or miss it all out by skiing Didier Defago straight into Morgins.
You can still go clockwise - it’s just that Linga isn’t much fun. But they’re finished by Wednesday teatime.
Or miss out Chatel altogether and just do the long blue into Morgins and zig zag back through CH, finishing up the Swiss Wall chair and down into Avoriaz.

@munter, if you go anti clockwise you could follow @andy from embsay’s advice but avoid Linga altogether by taking the bus from bottom of Linga to Pre La Joux. Buses pretty frequent and take about 5-10 minutes. Then decide if you have time to play around that area or straight up on Pierre Longue/ Rochassons down to Lindarets and a lift up to the ridge above Avoriaz.
Usually taking the Linga lifts is fine but with the race course it means a steep icy red run marked “Bons skieurs” which wouldn’t suit a mixed ability group.

Over to the Swiss side today though the French Mosettes was late opening which was a bit of a pain. We managed a run down Grands Paradis but it is only just possible due to thin snow on the road. Mixed weather with some cloud and some sun and a rain shower just now. Snow mostly still decent on piste.

Stayed around Super Chatel today. It was above zero all day and turned to rain around 1600.
Strangely enough had a great day even though conditions not perfect. Still plenty of snow and easy enough to ski back down to the bottom of the SC gondola.

We are arriving in Les Gets at the weekend and following all the mild temps and rain it all looks very grim on the webcams for decent skiing. Forecast seems to be for more rain and mild temps so is anyone able to advise on what the pistes are like around Les Gets, over to Morzine and Mont Chery please? Looks they might get worse over the next few days as well? Wondering whether we may have to drive up to Avoriaz if not enough skiing in Les Gets??? thanks

@Russ1447, Mt. Chery was fine Tuesday morning last time we were there.
Rosta bowl ok yesterday, the Ranfoily lift was not going to open till 11, I don’t know why, probably making everywhere more crowded. It did feel very busy to me for January and we have skied here since 1999, apart from last four years. There appeared to be huge groups of young French around, ( no reason not to be there!) late teens/early twenties, hooning around, all in woolly hats, shrieking away, I was pleased when they disappeared up the Chamossiere lift!
The Lievre was pretty soggy by 11.30, we were home by 1 and took the dog out. Up at Praz de Lys today, sun out at the top. We are expecting our daughter and family tonight so a bit disappointed it has turned so warm.

Yes.
The "Morzine-Les Gets" area/pass is anything 'west' (Nyon/Pleney gondolas) of Morzine. Everything 'east' of Morzine (Super-Morzine/Adrent/Les Prodains) are the "Avoriaz" area/pass.

Pistes looking a bit rough this afternoon.
What's the pick for this weekend? The obvious choice of going high or some less trafficked areas like Mt Chery or Roc d'Enfer?

It’s not far off!
I think by this time last year we’d had a pretty good dump of snow to low levels, so Pleney and Les Gets were pretty ok (albeit briefly). That hasn’t happened this year and we have nothing but warm and sunny weather in the forecast. Makes for a poor start below 1600m. All the snow on Pleney, except the very top, is man made and disappearing rapidly. The links to Nyon and Les Gets are still open I’m pleased to say.
Super Morzine is still ok, a few brown patches under the Zore chair.

Fornet bowl icy/scraped and no fun at all. Burgers in Changabang good!

Arriving (Les Gets) Wednesday evening for 3 days skiing. Regretting not booking Morzine now. Is there such thing as a combined Morzine/LG and Avoriaz pass or do I need the full PDS one?
Also wondering if I can cancel my LG airbnb and book something closer to the super Morzine lift

Nope. You just get "single zone" or "full area" passes. You can though buy day tickets for individual zones.
From memory last year the cut off point between "Morzine-Les Gets week pass + Avoriaz day passes" vs. "PdS pass" was "+ 3 Avoriaz day passes" (though that may have been half day Avoriaz passes as I was looking at the costs for dragging friends and their children that side after morning ski school lessons).
|

@Mjit, I’m not sure if they still do it, but there certainly was a locals/seasonnaire pass that did Morzine/LG and Avoriaz (but not the rest of PdS), but you need(ed) a work contract to buy one. And TBH if you are under 26 or reasonably quick off the mark the earlybird season pass offers are such brilliant value - my mate who is out for about 12 days bought one of the flash sale ones last year and is saving money on buying individual passes.

Forecast was for rain this afternoon and it duly arrived around 14.15 and still raining now. 8C on our balcony at 1300m.
We skied the Chalet Neuf, Morclan, Super Chatel area. Pretty quiet and whilst soft it was in reasonable nick.
Only tomorrow morning left on this trip then a run to GVA followed by dodging the agriculteurs on Sunday on the way home.

As posted elsewhere:
Based on this week you need to avoid the Fornet bowl like the plague. Very icy/scraped. The best conditions we had over the last couple of days were in Super Chatel. Swiss side also not bad.
Today we had an early start and everything above PLJ was well groomed and crispy. By 1200 it was all scraped and icy. Very busy as well. PLJ car park completely full.
It needs more snow. The run down to Ardent was OK earlier in the week.
That’s the end of this trip. Dodging agriculteur roadblocks tomorrow.

Skied the circuit yesterday; boiler plate pretty much everywhere for most of the day. Some lower sunny slopes had softened by the end of the day. Not often in January that you can sit on a sunny terrace at 4pm and drink beer though.
