How are the roads looking in the resort? Always used to be well cleared but I'll be driving in on Saturday and I haven't received my snow chains yet

Roads are good - snow is falling faster than they are clearing so it's not totally clear but winter tyres are fine

Thanks! @Nadenoodlee, Has anyone done any digging to see how the off piste areas look? I would assume that with the warm temperatures, rain and strong winds that there is going to be a pretty unstable base with lots of fresh stuff on top for the weekend? Slab city..

There is a chance that I will be driving from Samoens to Morzine next Wed or Thu to meet a friend for a days skiing. He is not yet sure of the best place to meet as he nor I have been there before but could anybody help regards to parking, is it free, is there plenty?, etc.

Hi @Basil, Here's a handy link from Morznet: http://www.morznet.com/parking
Depending on where you want to ski there are going to be different recommendations, for instance the Prodains lift to Avoriaz is a good spot to park at if you want to hit that side. Free parking is relatively limited in Morzine, you might get away with it in the Carrefour car park, but you might get towed. Otherwise the parking doesn't look too expensive and underground/covered parking is always worth the extra pennies when you're changing out of your boots on the tailgate of the car and accidentally stepping in the puddles in your socks.

Lovely morning on MC, after an abortive trip to Praz de Lys. Road closed and a gendarme at the bridge.
We must have passed at least eight snow ploughs of various types between our chalet and the perrieres roundabout, more than in the whole of Sussex probably. The sun has now come out and all looks stunning.

Basil - I've always found that parking at the Ardent bubble works well for accessing the heart of PdS. Slightly longer drive, but you park at the base of the bubble itself. Or if you want to maximise ski time you'll drive right past Les Gets from Samoens.

@simo1234, Thanks, I see what you mean about Ardent but I am meeting somebody in Morzine and expect only to ski the Morzine-Les Gets area as it's a day trip.

Good idea @nadenoodlee, its probably only about 20 minutes on ski and lifts from there to the top of the Pleney bubble, and the OP will save themselves about 15 mins ( at my driving speed) travel between Les Gets and Morzine, and the Perrieres is down at the Samoens end of the town

I'm interested to know if they have fired up the snow cannons? We are coming out to Morzine on Saturday. Is there a possibility that the Pleney lower slopes will be open? - Thanks

Pretty nice conditions around the Panthiaz/Braitaz and Torgon today.
It got ridiculously cold and awful visibility at the top of the Tronchy around lunchtime to I started to head back to La Chapelle. As soon as I got back down to Torgon the clouds cleared and the sun came out (and it felt about 10 degrees warmer )

Just seen from Morzine Source Magazine on FB that there's been a big avalanche up at Avoriaz this afternoon - many pisteurs and instructors helping with the search. Six injured - one heli'd off. They think they've got everyone out now.

Snow cannons all came on just before 4pm. lots of people returning to morzine by Piste b, though officially closed presumably due to having to jump a stream at one point. Amazing powder today, though i spent nearly twenty mintues looking for one of my skies when the bindings released early in a gully with metre deep snow. Shop i bought them at had set the DIN to low. Really need to work on my off piste technique anyway. Great day and more snow to come later this week.

Hey snowheads
Just a quick question for those who are out there at the moment. I'm flying over tomorrow on a work trip and skiing Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There are a few decent skiers going so I'm trying to decide on skis to bring.
I've seen that quite a lot has come down and not everything is open yet with more snow to come. So.... Should i take powder skis (atlas) or every day skis (cochise)? My heart's saying the powder skis!
Thanks
J

Hi all. We are thinking of booking avoriaz. Flying out either a week on Sat/sun (24th) or the weekend after. After a bad start to season, Will the snow that has fallen be ok in a week or 2 (hopefully with more a ow falling before we arrive) or are there still rocks and mounds showing on piste. We'll prob just stick to cruisy blues and occasional red but will want to go all over (morzine and other areas, not just avoriaz). Or should I be looking at other resorts. Been looking at alp d'heur (??) And la cluset. Again, org had good snow fall this week but hoping its enough. Thanks for any advice

Looks like there was an avalanche today in Avoriaz that ran onto a piste and caught some skiers out:
http://www.powpowpow.org/avalanche-in-avoriaz/
Luckily no one was injured but I've never heard of this happening before (avalanche onto an open piste).

@kesone1,
The powder is light and fluffy. It doesn't matter what skis you are on, as long as you have the correct technique.

Hope your technique is rock solid to make statements like that
Far more fun on the proper skis for the conditions. So if you've got powder skis now is definitely the time to use them!

Had an amazing, untracked, thigh-deep powder afternoon on Morclan in Chatel yesterday, when the chair opened at 1pm.
Now snowing heavily at 600m in Lausanne, it's turned white outside in the time it took to write a couple of emails.

White and around 3-4 cms in Geneva - started around 8:50 our side of the lake (rive gauche).
