harri20000, ansta1, like jimmybog, says there's little real link between the conditions one month and how they might look the next.
Moreover, the similarity between now and December 2010 are limited. It is currently colder than average and there is quite a bit of high latitude blocking. But both the extent of cold temperatures and the blocking in late 2010 were far more severe (NAO index of -1.8 compared to around -0.5). ENSO was also quite different, a strong negative La Nina (-1.5) compared to a weakly positive neutral ENSO (+0.46).
So I wouldn't in any case say the two months are that similar.

I was the coldest I've been for some time in Val D'Isere today, it was apparently -15 in a few of the lads cars as they drove to the meet point!!
It warmed up after lunch to a balmy -5 at the bottom of La Daille. If I read my wigglies correctly the temp is going to keep rising tomorrow, before dropping off a cliff on Wednesday!!
Not used long johns for years, may just have to use them Wed onwards!!!
nozawaonsen, do you have any view on wind strengths for Val D'Isere for the next few days???

kitenski, at a quick glance strong winds, cold, snowy. Wednesday winds look lighter (relatively speaking), Thursday looks best chance for a pause in the snow before it picks up Friday. Good for testing kit.

Heading to Chamonix in a couple of weeks. Looks like they got a good dump yesterday and overnight. MeteoFrance is forecast another 150cm at 2000M over today and tomorrow. With more coming at the end of the week! Looks like France is getting the goods....

Temperatures are going to be well below average across Europe for at least the coming week.
http://www.wxmaps.org/pix/temp4.html
Friday morning in the Alps looks especially cold.
Further snow through to the end of the week with a possible pause Thursday night.
Winds look like dropping from Sunday and particularly in the west more sunshine looks likely next week.
Some suggestions this morning that the second half of the month may see some warmer temperatures, though that means warming up to seasonal average rather than anything more alarming than that at this stage.

Well it hasn't stopped snowing in Val D'Isere since I arrived on Sunday!! Deep ski tracks I put down yesterday to get back to my apartment were completely filled in by today.
Fingers crossed for a break in the weather tomorrow as we have the performance strand of my course to do!!

Ricklovesthepowder, cold. Here's a bit from the Met Office.
Wintry weather continues across the UK
"Temperatures are expected to fall well below freezing tonight with lows down to -8 °C across parts of Scotland, making it the coldest night of the winter so far... rain will turn to snow in places from the Midlands northwards.
Snow is likely to be persistent and at times heavy across western Scotland where over 10 cm are expected above 400 metres or so. Further south, accumulations of snow are also likely over the Pennines and the Lake District. Temporary snow cover is forecast to lower levels in England as far south as Lincolnshire.
... As we head into the weekend high pressure is expected to build across the UK bringing much drier weather but it will stay very cold and frosty."
This evening's ECM finished on a very cold easterly for the UK for mid month. Obviously at that range it could easily change (and easterlies are tricky), but signs that colder temperatures may well be down the line.

kitenski, still looks quite breezy, but a better chance if clearing up as the day goes on (more so at altitude).
Here's some highlights from SLF this evening.
"Between Tuesday midday and Wednesday midday [there was]
Northern flank of the Alps, northern Valais, 30 - 50 cm
... Thursday
In northern regions it will be heavily overcast to begin with, accompanied by snowfall. It will turn dry in the afternoon, amidst bright spells in inneralpine regions and snow showers until evening in eastern regions. In southern regions it will be rather sunny.
Fresh snow
Northern flank of the Alps from the Berner Oberland into the Alpstein: 20 - 40 cm
... On Friday and Saturday, skies will be heavily overcast by and large, snowfall is anticipated in northern regions in particular... The wind will be blowing at strong velocity intermittently, on Friday from westerly, on Saturday from northeasterly directions. The cold will persist. The avalanche situation will continue to remain treacherous."

And just to highlight the SLF's recent warnings have described the avalanche risk on many areas as "treacherous" and "critical."

Piccadilly, next week looks less snowy than this week. Cold and more frequently sunny at least compared to this week. That said 10/11 December look like they could bring more snow to the northern side of the Alps, it's less clear whether it will reach as far south as Val d'Isere though.
From mid month a lot of possibilities opening up, some suggestions that temperatures may return closer to seasonal average, some suggestions it could turn colder. Take your pick.

nozawaonsen, how's it looking for snow as i drive down from UK on Sunday via Luxembourg (stay over the night) and then Monday Stuttgart, Munich, Salzburg, Ski Amade area. Long way out I know but you mention some snow 10/11 and I've seen forecast (http://www.xcweather.co.uk/DE/observations) for snow over much of southern germany for Sun/Mon. It's a shame my winter tyres are waiting for me at the end of this trip in Austria, doh! I of course want snow just not when I'm driving.

Only if you're going to France.
In a break with tradition, I'm going to Mayrhofen this christmas, I've been watching anxiously Austria NOT getting much of the snow that France has had, I would like to see a decent dump there yet.
Nozawa, whats the story with the begfex forecasts - they seem to predict huge amounts which whittle away to nothing. This friday saturday they're now offering 8 and 12cm (down from the 50s!) whereas j2ski is predicting a pretty useless 1cm. From webcams I do not see what I would call _much_ snow at Mayrhofen.

Callum001, yes worth taking a look at mid month as a change looks possible with low pressure heading in from the west.
From now until then it looks like temperatures will be well below average, but recent runs have suggested warmer air getting drawn up as this system passes through. Also a lot of moisture so it could well bring a fair amount of snow particularly to the south and west of the Alps around the Italian French border.
andyrew, Austria hasn't been getting the large quantities that have been falling in the French Alps, but it has certainly been getting snow (especially at the western end). I wouldn't worry. Bergfex is usually pretty good, it was suggesting some rather silly amounts of snow this weekend, but had no real support from elsewhere, so not really a surprise that this has been reduced. Still looks like a fair amount.
waynos, you will be travelling with the snow on Monday. Reckon Sunday should be ok, but it might be snowy driving on Monday.

I've just cleared about 8" of snow off my drive that's come down since last night here in Lenggries. Roads are bad round here and it's still bucketing down. I came back from Munich Airport last night and the motorways were completely clear but it wasn't snowing then.

I don't really want a diversion to Munich...but I suppose Friedrichshafen, where my Monarch charter diverted last year, wouldn't be disastrous for getting to Lech.

Maybe this belongs in another thread but just curious what the protocol/mindset is of the Euro ski resorts when it comes to snow making. Do they have the snow cannons fired up whenever the wet bulb temps are favorable? With these cold temps, I would imagine they would have the snow guns fired up on all cylinders to lay down a good base.

The more it snows, the longer the trail lasts.
I have skied on a white concrete ribbon of 2-foot-deep fake snow in a totally green valley in heavy rain at 1200 meters in France in May.

Some of the cannons were running in Les Arcs today. I could see a couple of big piles of artificial snow when I went for a look at the nursery slopes this morning.

Planes have been flying in and out all day, they're pretty good at dealing with snow. My comments (mostly) refer to my flat, which is halfway up one of the mountains to the north of the city, so we usually get more snow than the airport down at city level. I'm sure you'll be fine.
