Samerberg Sue, You predicted this block beginning of April? Is this a pattern that has happened before, as in a high over the Ukraine in April is still hanging around in November? If this has happened before then when will the high move on? |
This is a blame culture we live in and someone must be to blame. Logic would suggest that the weather forecasters giving us all this rubbish information are to blame.
Looks like Samerburg Sue has just put her hand up for the Alp's lack of snow to be her fault completely. Everyone else is just copying her. She should have forecast a nice set of low pressure zones way back then - and we wouldn't be in this mess now.

We have angered the Snowgods by attempting to usurp their power of creating Snow. The Gods must be appeased. They demand a sacrifice.
I'm sure all right thinking skiers would agree that the proper response is to burn nozawaonsen, in a wicker cage on the learner slope at Hemel Hempstead. It might seem harsh, but if it means there'll be snow in Tignes next week I'll be there with the burning brands.

emwmarine, That was a bloody auto-correct bloomer from my iPad. I meant at the beginning of October!
I'm not panicking yet as I can more or less pick and choose when I go skiing, unlike some here. I feel sorry for those who end up with no or little snow, but can't people enjoy the holiday anyway? It's got to beat work or grey and miserable UK winters surely?

For the last day or so the GFS operational and control runs have been at opposite ends of the spectrum. The former mild the latter cold. Obviously one had to buckle. On this evening's 12z it was the operational which has dived down to join the control turning things colder and snowier in the Alps from the start of December. As ever for it to mean anything it needs to continue to be picked up in future runs.

Spud9,
Well if 12z GFS comes good then it's snow next week , re burning Noza not so sure he influences the weather he just predicts it, well actually he doesn't do that , so let's burn him for not predicting anything!!?? Re noza question please, re the fantasy thread and the day of predicted snowfall what happens if it starts snowing at 4 on the 2nd December but doesn't reach the required minimum height until the 3rd, which day wins?

The 'grey & miserable' bits of the UK winter are actually what makes it snow here.

I'm keeping my thumbs pressed for snow but if there's no real snow for a while it will be fun comparing the artificial snow offerings of the different resorts. So, which is the most extensive, which the deepest, which the most natural looking and so on.

So next issue... When it snows, with the temperature inversion... does it not mean that the snow will melt relatively quickly on the upper slopes, unless the temperatures after the snowfall remain below freezing?

Timmaah, unlikely to have a temperature inversion and snowy weather at the same time. An inversion requires calm, stable weather.

Thick horrible cloud here this morning, the first morning for ages I've not been able to see the sun rise over La Tournette from my bedroom window. Thick frost too.

06z GFS is just finishing. It's operational run was not dissimilar to the 00z, bringing cold and snow into the Alps from 03 December.
Obviously off in the distance so it pays to be cautious. And at this stage building consistency is important in establishing any confidence. That's four out of the last four runs.
