In Avoriaz it is still raining, but hopefully soon turning into snow. Still snow in the village, so don't worry.

@Astontech, Cooling of air by Lac Leman for storms approaching from the north. |
Lac Léman in winter is warmer than the surrounding land. |
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake-effect_snow
Lake-effect snow is produced during cooler atmospheric conditions when a cold air mass moves across long expanses of warmer lake water. The lower layer of air, heated by the lake water, picks up water vapor from the lake and rises through colder air. The vapor then freezes and is deposited on the leeward (downwind) shores |
Sure, but my point was related to the freeze level in pds, the air isn't cooled by the lake, in winter, though it may well be moisterised slightly.
I doubt lac Léman is big enough to contribute a significant amount of snow to a ski area that is double it's size (approx 1000km2 v 580km2). You might get lake effect snow off the Great Lakes, but I doubt it happens here. I would be happy to be corrected, as I'm no meteorologist (but I do spend a lot of time on that lake).
As I've mentioned before, I think a lot of this talk of "lake Geneva microclimate" is misunderstanding or estate agent speak. There are many microclimates on and around that lake. For example, non-frost hardy palm trees (or tree ferns, whatever) grow along the shore in Montreux because it's protected from the north wind (the Bise) by mountains. A few km along the shore to the west, there are no palm trees in Vevey because it sits to the south of a valley which funnels the bise. The annual Bol d'Or yacht race is won and lost each year by tacticians with a London taxi driver's Knowledge of these microclimates and resulting winds.

^^ exactly this ^^
@Astontech, It will be what it will be. Morzine will probably be green when you drive through it. Avoriaz will be white and a winter wonderland. The weather over the weekend will be blue skies and the skiing fabulous. If you’re still here next week, it will rain again on Tuesday and Wednesday, but maybe not so much in Avoriaz, and then it will be warm and sunny for the rest of the week, and if the forecasts are correct, until the end of January (FI I know).

Hello,
Where would you recommend skiing tomorrow? If possible we would like to have fresh snow and some off-piste. We are staying in Morzine. In Avoriaz it will snow tonight at all levels, but will there be wind? visibility? Les gets... Will it still be rain in lower Ranfoilly?
Châtel...

@Ichure, Very much depends on what is open due to wind and viz. It’s likely to rain > sleet > snow as the snow line drops through the day to valley level by evening. I would head to the it’s around Linderets where there is some protection from trees. Stay on piste as avalanche risk is high at 4/5 on Thursday.

Awesome! I saw a few specks appearing as the webcam seemed to stop for the night at 10pm last night. Hoping the temperatures dosent climb to turn it to rain.
Pretty insane amount of PPN in the NW alps the last 24 hours.

@Astontech, it’s going to sleet and snow later but don’t worry. (I see you’ve been of many threads wondering about the snow situation). A couple of day’s rain will not have significant impact and will be forgotten by Saturday. Avoriaz is one of the snowiest places in France.

I will be in Morzine for a week early March.
If we wanted to do some guided off-piste for a day can anyone give me any suggestions/recommendations of who to approach.
There would be 3 (or 4) of us, (2 or 3) would be quite new to this but are proficient skiers/boarders.

@Ray Zorro - Peak Snowsports or Marco Barcellari both do off-piste guiding. Peak might be very busy, but Marco is a one man band and often has random availability.

Contact the ESF office and see if Guillaume's available. Brilliant guide with a dry, British sense of humor who had no trouble finding us untracked, wind blown snow 2 weeks after the last snowfall a couple of years ago. Flying out in 9 days for another, I think my 4th, week with him.

Can we talk about Morgins please. I feel like I’m missing something as I just don’t find it that great.
The blue/red run down from the télécabine always seems wonky as you go round. The other main blue (where the speed test is) is nice at the top then incredibly scratchy until that shushy bit going down to the T bar. And there was a big incident there last weekend.
I’m lucky enough to live fairly local so we’re in PDS most weekends. Last year we tended to stay in the Chatel side but my kids are doing ski school in Morgins (they’ve always followed ESS) so I’m “forced” (first world problem of course) to be in Morgins every Saturday.
We’ve headed over to Champoussin but then you’ve got to do the zig zag up and down back to Morgins which is ok but just not my fave skiing, and don’t have quite enough time to go as far as Les Crosets (and don’t know it well over there anyway).
I’m quite experienced but love a lovely blue or red, rather than anything too challenging. Chatel is sooooo much better in comparison IMVHO but wondering if I’m missing something about Morgins.

Hi all - arriving in Avoriaz Saturday evening, fingers are crossed the snow is good (it's looking decent right now! )
Quick question, I have a new set of skis and need my bindings mounting on them, where would be best in Avoriaz to get that sorted?

Of course, climate change at a local level is not necessarily about warming. There will also be some places likely to get colder. Or wetter. Or drier. With more extreme events.

Arrived in Avoriaz at around 7pm after a very sketchy/scary drive up from Morzine.
Very deep snow here, I estimate probably around 50cm fresh judging some of the tables/chairs.

Best thing about Morgins is the long run back from the top of mossettes. If you can make that lift in time, you can get home, which makes it pretty accessible on the way back. The way out is a different story however.

No actually, perhaps we'll drop the kids at TC Morgins for their lesson then head over that side before picking the kids up again at lunch. I know Super Chatel well, but not the bit from Morgins... thanks for the reminder.

Honestly, the scratchy bits on the blues at Morgins are giving me a hard time to get my confidence up - feel like I'm skiing like a beginner again (and I've been skiing on and off for 37 years !!) so just not feeling the idea of blacks at this point. And my youngest would deffo not entertain it either.
But if that's the best bit, then perhaps its not just me and that actually Morgins, dare I say it, ain't all that?

Sounds like in and around Chalet Neuf is ideal for you. The chair from Morgins is annoying if you need to download due to lack of snow but think it’s well worth the trip - also probably queit on a Saturday.

Lovely day around PLJ today, even the steep run down from Echo Alpin back towards Linga was in good condition. Lots of fun nibbling at the edges too. Linga has racing over the next few days so the main piste down was closed/closing as the day went on. A couple of cold, clear days to come before milder weather arrives early next week as mentioned on the main weather thread. Think there will be a lot of local traffic/skiers around this weekend so car parks will be pretty full.

When the snow is decent, I've found Morgins (especially Champoussin) to be relatively quiet and less crowded than the Super Chatel area (much fewer lifts). The long run off Mossettes, as noted, can be great. I was once caught in a white-out up there, was not fun. I like Morgins, in general.

Pros: Corbeau is lovely when open and has Fresh snow
Nice Beginner area around La Foilleuse and La Combe
Plenty of places for freeride
Hidden spots ( Savolaire, Rock Gap, Forest)
Defago is a great run
Its much less busy than surrounding areas.
Easy access to Chalet Neuf (also quiet) and Super Chatel
Cons: Corbeau not open very often.
Long T Bar back from Champoussin bowl.
Patchy snow coverage on South side of Pt de l'Au ridge
Need to remove skis / board when crossing the village - though the same is True for Morzine and Les Gets.

Anyone know why PdS was sooooo busy this weekend?
Mid & Late Jan are traditionally the 2 quietest weeks, yet Avoriaz was heaving in Saturday.
The queues for Tour and the New Arare lifts were pretty much joined at one point.
Lindarets was a bit quieter and Linga / PLJ a lot calmer.
Sunday, seemed like a big Dutch contingent in Chatel / PLJ on the pistes, but mainly French cars in the car parks.
Ardent car park is full by 9:30, Perrigner Car park (les Gets) was rammed on both sides, and even P7, the big overflow in PLJ was 3/4 full.

@OuatteDePhoque, Judging by the amount of French and Swiss cars queuing to get into/through Les Gets on Saturday as we were leaving I'd guess masses of "locals" hoping to enjoy only their second good weekend this year. At 10:00 am the traffic heading up from Taninges was pretty much solid all the way. Pretty much the same as the previous weekend where all 4 lifts in the LG bowl had long queues all day.

Haven’t been there yet this year (will be there in 9 days though), but in all the years I’ve been going to Les Gets, I’ve never known Mt Chery to be busy. Even when the rest of Les Gets is rammed.

We were on Mt Chery on Saturday after arriving Friday. There were a lot of kids races going on but all fine. We did the circuit at Roc d’Enfer yesterday, lots of cars around but no queuing to speak of.
Pleased to be able to get to La Paika this morning, and down from there onto the Melezes, after picking our way down a very sparse Vorosses to La Turche first time round.
