Mount Etna has erupted recently - so certainly 'warm' : Sicily?

Clue: in the photo my dad is holding a woolly hat bearing a Del Monte logo (not that you can tell that from the resolution). He worked for Del Monte at a local canning factory 1.5 hour drive from here. Hopefully that’s not made it too easy now. You could guess the most popular produce canned there? Is this too random?
|

You know it makes sense.

@albob, sadly no.
Don’t think there’s a Del Monte factory on Sicily?

@ski3, yes, perhaps

|
|
|
|
Oooh, I don't know which though. My knowledge of the ski areas minimal, I've got a wierd thought connection through Polly Peck, Azil Nadir (Turkish Cypriot) and Del Monte, which I don't know if that tallied
I'll plump for Cyprus.

@ski3, the ‘perhaps” was mirroring your Greece proposal. It’s in Greece, the main canned produce is peaches - don’t think there are too many ski areas to choose from in Greece and only one that close to the Aegean (there you go, another clue). Bonus point for the film filmed on the nearest island chain...

Is is Crete? There is skiing in the Lefka Ori mountains.
Zorba the Greek is set in Crete. There was also a film version of Patrick Leigh Fermor's exploit commanding partisans who captured the German General in Crete during the war and smuggling him out to a submarine. However the island chain suggests Kefalonia (or Cephalonia) and the book and film of Captain Corelli's mandolin.

@dobby, was right, I looked at some photos and it is Pelion. I can see the chain of Islands but can't think of the film.
Edit: Mama Mia

That was an excellent puzzle, @Grinning!

Polly Peck, Azil Nadir (Turkish Cypriot) -- I remember him ; cost me MONEY !!!
Grinning - kept us guessing...
Now -- there must be a story about how you came to be skiing in Greece? :: Do tell....
|
|
|
|
|
You know it makes sense.
|
@dobby, done it with arrow-like precision.
Pelion, legendary home of the Centaurs and launching site of Jason’s Argo, it is, the winter centre near Xania.
Rarely good conditions but spectacular vistas.
Dad worked for Del Monte’s canned business on the sweltering arid plains of Larissa (well, tucked away in an a/c office) bringing home the peaches. The Pelion was the cooler bolt-hole: 35years on, it’s still a beautiful part of the world even now that EasyJet fly there direct in the summer.
@snowball, yes, Mamma Mia and the Sporades chain although Pierce Brosnan was filmed on the mainland at the cement factory boarding a yacht because of the azure blue waters (caused by the cement sediment).
Polly Peck were licensed to use the Del Monte brand for a fresh fruit business which was separate from the stuff in cans - never skied in Cyprus though.
Lots of weekend trips skiing to Mt Parnassos/Arahova next door to Delphi: walking around the Delphic temple wearing 80s shoulder-padded slalom jumper was all the rage.
I think that is my trivia knowledge of the Pelion and other Greek ski areas properly exhausted now.
Thanks for your patience and over to Dobby!
