Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Well, @Ricklovesthepowder, Chamonix Meteo suggesting 20-30cms at 1,800m so I'd temper your expectations.

I know that I rather provocatively, nay almost trollishly, suggested that the idea of snow in Morzine was just a rumour put about by the tourist office, but in all seriousness how much of the season / how often would you actually expect to see snow in the village?.

So far this week: Once.

Today about 5cms has fallen in town and it continues to snow lightly. Pretty much all of Avoriaz is closed for wind. Bits of Pleney and Les Gets are open.

Normally we have snow in the village from December - end of Feb then it gets a bit grotty.

Snowing even down in Montriond today.

how does this points scheme work?

@mihaid, on the back of your hands free card, in the blue printing that they put on at the lift pass office, there is the word "bonus" followed by a number. Each time you add another day or week or whatever on the card, this number goes up (I've never quite understood by how much, but someone else will be along to explain it I'm sure).

When the number reaches 200, you can get a free day's pass for the full PdS area on that card. Points cannot be transferred or amalgamated though.

[To cover this sort of thing, I have revived the old "unofficial Portes du Soleil not-the-weather thread" from 2014 in "the Piste". There was a similar general thread started last year but I can't find it.]

... on that other topic (i.e., snow), Val D'Illiez website Meteo is forecasting snow every day this week until Sunday and temperatures not rising above zero at any time.

Just checking flights for the weekend ... where's my diary?

Skied around Les Gets today. 15cm of fresh snow on an icy base made for some easy and fun off piste.
Overall the snow is OK but thin on all pistes. The bottom of Pleney is still 30cm's of snow from opening I think. The temps are warmer than expected, +1C at 1000m at the moment and light snow falling.

@zzz, icy base?....was soft everywhere a few days ago. The only thin spots I found were heading into the bowl and of course down at village level....but would have hoped they would have filled in by now

Lovely conditions in Les Gets today. Very soft snow with fresh powder to be found to the sides of the slopes. Visibility much better than expected, with some brief but heavy snow showers. In the last hour though the clouds have come in and snow is now accumilating quickly.

It's pretty normal for it to be quiet up there, especially at this time of year. It's a great find isn't it?

I must have seen about 20 people (skiers) all day. The red under the Tromby had lovely conditions. About 20cm of fresh powder, and as I was pretty much the only person using it for the first hour, I was able to have powder every time Smile

Unfortunately the red and blue under the Braitaz lift were quite icy and with a pretty thin level of snow. Although it snowed quite heavily in the afternoon for a short while so even those runs improved greatly.

Was open from around 9.30am I think. As mentioned in my other post, conditions under the Tromby were superb, but not so great under the Braitaz - perfectly skiable, just a pretty thin cover and very icy. I imagine it will be much nicer tomorrow. Hopefully the rest of Torgon will be open too.

I can imagine. Top of Braitaz was like that for most of the day. I'm staying pretty much on top of the Panthiaz lift, so was relieved to see it finally open this morning, rather than having to get the bus into Chatel like I have done for the first couple of days.

Winds are forecast to drop tomorrow, so really hope they open up the Tronchey link.

@zzz, yep saw the rain, but surprised that's it's hard already, as temps haven't gone much below zero.
And @Evan Roberts, says 'lovely soft snow'...at least the top layer

It's all good either way, stronger base, powder on top and plenty more to come to cover up any patches. Hope it's all open by the weekend....anyone done MC yet?

There is the wet heavy snow of yesterday as well as ligher snow from overnight and today. Makes for a very good base and the icey patches from two days ago were mostly covered in my experience. The black runs down from La Rosta were both well skied today with good snow, though officially still closed.

@mikeycharlton, Torgon piste report here:

http://www.torgon.ch/ouverture-des-pistes/

Sounds like Tronchey might open tomorrow. That would give you a good area to go at from Pantiaz.

Had the cakes from the Col du Braitaz restaurant bar area yet? Highly recommended especially on a wild windy day.

They have some really, really good wine in la chaudanne.
Depending on how deep your pockets are, ask them to show you the wines that aren't on the wine list-had a great bottle of '90 Chateau Pavie ,before xmas, in there Smile

About another 15-20cm fell last night making a total of about 30cm overall in town. Should be a nice day.

Not sure there's been as much as some forecasts but probably 50+cm up the top of Morzine/Les Gets and 20cm down at Morzine village level.

Main problem this week's turned out to be wind, rather than lack of snow - not made it up to Avoriaz since Sat and avoriaz.com listing "violent winds" for the lifts that are actual open.

@Ricklovesthepowder, not sure how much fell in Morzine, where you are interested?, but quite a lot here in Les Gets at about 1240. Looks like about a foot of fresh stuff on the lids of the poubelles I can see from the window. We think we are heading over to Praz de Lys a bit later this morning.
