Chris Brookes, Not spotted him so far, but I don't always look in the shop when I drag my planks out in the morning.
Weather update is not good I'm afraid - 12.45am (just back from the Sunstar) - +4C and rain in Wengen. I can see Murren and Mannlichen from my terrace, so I guess the freezing level is about 2500 metres.

telford_mike, not good, but I thought that would be the case. Snow-forecast was suggesting rain, turning to snow as the temp drops overnight. Tomorrow is forecast to be a much colder day - as is Christmas day with light snow flurries throughout.

Looks like you might get a little more than the possible 20cm I forecast the other day, in more good news temps now look like remaining cold for at least the next week with Wed-Friday being a little above freezing but not much, following week now looking more promising with temps now forecast to remain below freezing and further snow indicated throughout much of the week starting Next Sunday with a little light snow with heavier snow possible from the 6th of Jan.
However as we all know accurate forecasting more than one week in advance is pretty hit and miss

Hi Chris we last went to Murren in Feb this year, just for skiing as we stayed in Wengen. about 6 or 7 years ago we went to Grindelwald in September for a short walking holiday and decided that we would go back and ski sometime, we thought at the time that Grindelwald was lovely, Murren was better but didn't like Wengen at all!
3 years later we booked flights and train transfers and secured a hotel booking in Lauterbrunnen at the Silberhorn. We booked here as friends were staying in an appartment in the same village. The hotel was ace, fantastic food and room, couldn't ask for better hospitallity, the only down side was there was very little snow! It was bad throughout the whole of Europe this partcular season! The short walk to the new gondola was made worse by the rain, we were wet almost every day, though of course, it was snow at the top. The view from our room was almost all very green, rabbits were frolicking in the meadows, it had a very spring like feel for the end of Feb.
The following year we booked independant again and checked into the Hotel Bellevue in Murren, we took my sister and her family along, they were "ski virgins", and also some other family and friends. There was 13 of us all together, the flight got us into Geneva on the Friday morning, we had booked a city hotel by the airport for the Friday night and spent the whole day in Geneva, it was amazing. The Saturday morning we were up and on the train 1st class to Lauterbrunnen then onto Murren. Hotel was great, food ok, not the best but not the worst either! The only "downside" was the slight altitude sickness some of the party seemed to suffer with for the first few days, and the fact that the exchange rate had taken a dive between us booking the hotel and arriving/paying for it made it more costly than we had anticipated.
Hence, the following year we booked with Inghams and went to Grindelwald, Hotel Hirschen. Hotel good, room excellent with the most fantastic view of the Eiger. This was the year my brother in law & neice had a serious toboggoning accident in Murren, 2 helicopters and a 4 day hospital stay! Inghams were fantastic, the rep, Ian, sorted everything for us, it was a harrowing time for all but thankfully all is ok now.
This year we waited as we had booked for Austria end Jan, during the snow we had over New year we were surfing the net and came accross an offer for Wengen, hotel Brunner, the only hotel ski in and ski out in Wengen ,(their words not mine)it was only £329 so we booked, this was half board end feb again. We arrived not expecting too mmuch because of price but also becauase we hadn't liked it years ago either but I have to say that out of all the resorts I liked this the best, it is so easy to get where ever you want, and was full of serious skiers.
So, back to next year, we have booked for Murren again, Hotel Eiger, 8th Jan, Why???
no deal, no reason other than its something different, a beautiful village, hotel has swimming pool and the best views of the Eiger and my hubby is obsessed with the Eiger, has read everything there is to read and watched all the films and documentaries going, lol
How about you? whats your reason for going to this region??

jim1515, if people want to know which resort to choose they will ask on here where the depth and range of knowledge is unrivalled. You make yourself look not a little foolish by suggesting that your website is a better place to go for definitive information!!

Not to mention the superb information on his website about Wengen, quote "Wengen itself boasts over 112kms of pistes, and has a 4777 feet vertical drop. However, access to the mountain is limited to cog railways (my italics) which are slow and can be frustratingly infrequent."
Ah, I take it the Männlichen cable car from the centre of Wengen was vapourised by a passing UFO!

My parents introduced me at the age of 5 to Murren and I have been returning for over 34 years now. I have taken family and many friends to Murren and just love the fact it hasn't been commercialised not like so many other resorts. The views are amazing and it is so peaceful and quiet and it is such a break from the normal pace of life back home. We have made many friends through the years and class this as our second home due to the amount of time we spend in the summer and winter here.
I have skied many places around Europe and still can't find anywhere that tops Murren.

Skied in France and Austria, but was introduced to Wengen about seven years ago, and just haven't found anywhere that quite compares - beautiful scenery, fun skiing, good company, friendly environment, pleasant nightlife

Well I suppose it's everyone to their own choice? However, I was first introduced to Wengen by my late father in 1952 and have missed very few years since then and I will be back there next weekend on the 2nd jan for a week, so make sure that the snow is good please! I Have skied just about everywhere in Europe and although there are some fantastic other resorts. Wengen has a certain magnetic charm and in my case many very very happy memories. In fact I nearly married a young girl from there!
If Jim thinks the Cog reailway is slow now he should have tried the old 'Coffee grinders' of the 50's and 60's when the ticket collector used to shuffle up the step on the outside of the carriages to collect his tickets!!
See you all again next week!!

I wouldn't go anywhere else for info on this region. The recent photos have been great.
In 28 years of skiing I have never been to the same place twice. That is changing this year having spent a week there last year. 5 and a bit weeks to go, providing I return safely from my initial trip.

Arctic Fox, be careful the place can become addictive, having been going there since before I was born in both summer and winter I ought to know
