No cars are allowed in Wengen or Murren. You can park them in Lauterbrunnen and then take the train to Wengen or the cable car to Murren.

chect2000, Last year I stayed in this apartment with some other Snowheads. It was extremely well equipped and very spacious, with a great view from the lounge balcony. However at the current exchange rate against the swiss franc, the apartment weekly rate of CHF2100 was certainly not cheap.
Hope this helps.

chect2000, I stayed here last year (found on a website suggested on this thread):

Not sure if the link goes through to the individual apartments, it was Chalet Am Acher 2. Also extremely well equipped and spacious with a large balcony and a view (across the valley towards Murren) but also not cheap. Highly recommended though.

Iam looking for a self catering apartment for 4 in Wengen or Murren for 8/9th Jan. Anybody know any?
Is it right that you cannot take a car into Wengen and you have to go by train?
Thanks |
For Murren i suggest the following
* Contact tourism with your requirements (info@muerren.ch)
* Visit http://www.muerren.ch ....click on 'Accommodation' and search through the listings
* Visit http://www.topapartments.ch
One i always suggest to friends visiting Murren is this one http://www.muerren.ch/raufthubel/index-e.html

Reservoir Ischlag on Mannlichen more expensive - but more stable - due to more then expected rock
http://www.jungfrauzeitung.ch/artikel/104445/
Snowmaking on the Brandegg-Grund run. Water will be sourced from Ischlag.
2 weeks to go for a week of hiking/via ferata... No plans to come close to Ischlag, but if I can get a picture using a big Tele or from the gondola perhaps I'll post it...
Base down in Lauterbrunnen, planned hikes take us from Wilderswil, to Schynige Platte, Faulhorn, First, Schwarzhorn, Marmorbruch, Eigertrail, Eigergletcher, Trummelbach, Mannlichen and finally the Inferno run to Schilthorn!

Alastair Pink, well said!
Before making detailed plans what to do day to day I expected to visit more... but... I think you need 3 weeks to go everywhere really.... and then me and wigan are pretty quick...

I'm at Geneva airport right now. Had a fantaaaaaaaaaaastic week with wigan hiking and via ferrata around the region.
Special tip: hanging off the cliffs under Murren on nothing but 11mm of steel wire and sturdy steel steps drilled into the rock.
Saw lots of rain, but we have been in the woods mostly when the rain fell, so no big problems with that.
Completed my little walk up the Schilthorn on saturday in just under 4 hours... ranked 95 out of 103 in the main class...
(rediculously expensive) Pics:

Was rather crowded on Schilthorn... had to wait 3 runs to get on the top section of the cablecar down.
[edit] Ooh looky, a certificate too:

Ronald, congrats! you must be super fit to do all of that.
we spent the previous week in interlaken (first time in the area) and didn't get to go up to the jungfraujoch or schilthorn cos of bad weather. or should i say, we weren't prepared to spend ~£100 each to see lots of fog/mist/rain/snowstorm and no views up there. it's such a shame as the afternoon we arrived, we had some lovely sunshine. we did walk up schynige platte, and the aare gorge and the reichenbach falls were superb. i definitely want to return so i can get that amazing view of the "three sisters" once again. though i think i can do without the sore calves for the first few days!

Seemed to be buildings and pipework mostly. Mind you, it was nothing compared to the excavations at Mannlichen - you would think they're building a new Olympic stadium up there!

I assume thats likewise for the new water supply and pipework we were told about earlier in the year or the upgrading of the GGM gondola
