Every time I look at the resort website I see Steissbachtal is marked as closed; has it really been closed all season? If so I assume there is still a risk of full depth slides off mattun?

That was the "Jungbrunntobel"
You ski down the top section of the ravine/gorge (Galzigbahn spans at top ) rightside until you reach the less severe ingress follow couloir down and exit leftside. The they skied the last section through the trees egressing at the Ventilator Shaft .
There are a few are other routes from Galzig. All these slopes are subject to windslab conditions & avi normally later in season.

It's not an 'itinerary,' it's proper offpiste. Can also get a slightly longer variation on the same area by going out the back of the Galzig building and hanging a left, less traverse for more terrain. Watch out though, there are some convexities and potentially sketchy parts.

The avalanche commision apparently feels like it's not stable and they can therefor not take the risk/chance of giving advice to the lift company that they can open the piste.
It's been officially closed since the last big snowfall started about 10 days ago or so.
It's skied up quit a lot, but should something happend, the lift company can not be held responsible.

Ski in Seefeld
Seriously, with all the reckless speed skiers & idiots on Steissbachtal I think it actually becomes quite intimidating for beginners.
I would like to see a new winding cat track built down from Osthang, not only to give an alternative way down for beginners but also to eleviate the problems with lawine closure.

I think this needs to be looked at; and maybe some serious avalanche protection for Steissbachtal. The problem, I guess, is that any kind of work like this would have a major environmental impact. Improving access and safety for non-experts is needed though.
You are right about reckless skiers, Steissbachtal may be the easy way down but it's not safe after about 3pm. When it's open I avoid it by traversing along the bachseit slopes for as far as possible.
Even if other routes were added there would still be a busy track from the base of the Zammermoosbahn, I wonder if that could be improved - or could a track from Galzig avoid that?
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

stanton, You're totaly right about the reckless skiers etc. I always ski Bachseite as the last run when I come from Stuben or Zürs, and down in Steissbachtal just go as fast as possible, to avoid getting skied into.
I know there is a run on the sketching board down over Maienwassen, but I guess it's a long process to get it approved, and then we would loose one of our favorite runs on bad weather days, but a bit of a trade off.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Similar to the old run back from St Christoph (T Bar ) Maienwassen & traverse to SennHutte?

environmental impact
Galzig is already an envriomental nightmare with all the lifts, ground works, excavations, Snow making lines, pump stations ,Lawine barriers, Radio & TV,Telephone repeater stations.
I dont think cutting a new cat track (similar to the one they did between Fang & Moos a few years ago) is really going to upset them
The enviromenatalist concentrate there efforts on opposing opening up new lift served areas (like Lech-Warth, ProjektDias ) .

Arriving in Zurich this Friday the 20th and scheduled for the afternoon Arlberg Express bus to Lech.
I notice on wetter.at, bergfex, etc. there is snow in the forecast.
How much snow will it take to close the Flexenpass?
Will the bus leave Zurich and wait in Stuben until the pass opens? We've been on this bus before, but nothing so bad that the bus had to put on snow chains.
Thanks.

There is 50cm to 100cm due over the next five days.
Friday is the heaviest snowfall of the five days.
The snowfall will not be heavy enough to close the roads for anything more than a few hours.

Nothing unusual about the slides on the south facing slopes into Steissbachtal. Only thing is it normally only happens in Springtime, quite often in april they close Steissbachtal in the afternoon.

That's the point, it is unusual for it to be closed for so long in early / mid January. In the spring I pretty much expect it to be closed, certainly in the afternoon.
Does anyone know how those slides were triggered - were they natural? I assume (and hope) no one was hurt.

sah, They look like they were blasted dont they? Missing happy valley is no hassle really is it, just traverse along the road and either back up the T Bar or join Kandahar half way down, much better run home IMO. I assume that Schindlerkar, the itinery off in the right bowl of Schindler is also closed? Also what about Mattun, and Mattunjoch presume this is well out of bounds for now, av risk etc.
Think you said you were going this weekend, ready for some deep on-piste pow?! Enjoy it. We arrive early on 28th, you PM'd me a couple of weeks ago - might see you in the bar late afternoon 28th for a beer if we're about that area, you can give us all the do's and don'ts from the weeks skiing!

I don't miss happy valley as such, but the lower part of Kandahar with a lot of beginners on it is not so much fun either. Also, I'm skiing with a few others next week, one of them is a little more wary of black mogul runs... he's going to hate me
I'm out there from the 25th... staying at Tom Dooleys so if anyone is around I'll likely be drinking there too (or Fang after after skiing I think). Will look out for you on Sat

Why so many folk only use Kandahar to get down is strange, it gets over crowded, people stopping in all the wrong places, can get very icy so you end up with body's sliding down all over the place
IMO I think its only good first thing in the morning when there are only a few people. You can get a a few laps & turns in & workup a good thigh burn to warm you up. OR otherwise when it is fully bumped out
I tend to take the direct route down.
A nice line down using Osthang Ski route (under the Galzigbahn) . Way less less people, & its great after a Storm.

At this time of year that's a pretty good plan, thanks for the reminder
The problem is in spring when that route gets pretty muddy lower down... then Kandahar is the only option when Steissbachtal is closed.
(out of interest, how did Steissbachtal get the name "happy valley" - is it meant to be a joke?)

Isnt that susceptible to av's? I know it used to be a piste when we first went to St Anton in early 90's but then became a itinery. Where does it come in at the bottom, by the piste-basher station just above Sennhutte or lower down?

Yes, and as it's a ski route it will be closed when there is a risk. It pops out just above the buildings you mention, directly under the Galzigbahn cables. There is also Zwischen which is not a ski route, this pops out slightly higher up the track and follow the old Feldherrenhuegel lift line. Both are good when there is good snow cover, I've not skied them for many years but should be fun next week.

It is rarely closed, in fact I cannot remember it ever being closed in 30yrs except maybe when I was out of town skiing somewhere else
The route is not wind facing,it is easterly facing, protected by the trees on both sides . Lawines are very rare & I have never seen any signs of lawinensprengung. Even after the last "Sub Storm Andrea" a couple of weeks ago.
This route is skiable right into late April. (except last)

Come to think of it I don't remember it being closed either... not sure it's always skiable in to April though, its was very thin and muddy low down the last couple of times I was there in March (both times were pretty warm and conditions were more like April to be honest).

I have always thought it was meant to be a sort of a joke, as everybody is "happy" at the end of a great day skiing and possibly knackered as well and happy valley is the way home for the vast majority of skiers.

Escalating avalanche danger - regionally high this afternoon

Bergfex is forecasting huge amounts over the next five days! 1m 40cms. Really?
Hope it keeps snowing for the next two weeks, then stops on Feb 3rd

Just arrived, quite a lot work to get here, certainly if you put on your chains on your front wheels, only to realise afterwards that you have traction on the rear wheels. Not a lot of lifts open, so we're staying in today. Difficult to estimate the actual cm's, but it's certainly enough . Now let's hope tomorrow some more lifts open up (only here till Monday...)
