charlie26, Night skiing is on Tues and Thurs on piste by Chantel lift.
Today we had an amazing day off piste, not sure which locals you are talking with Allanm, but the guides tell me they are happy to do most of the off piste now as it is all getting much more stable as long as you stay clear of faces that have fracture lines or wind slab on them.
Today we did a number of routes into the park and the col de chal as well. All gave us the chance to put down more fresh tracks which was great. Tomorrow promises to be another great day.

Snow still fine today, run of the day Clair Blanc but not between the markers, past the normal 'entrance' and drop off the edge a bit further down, steep start, but easier after the first few yards. Villaroger from the top, OK, but there is better. M pretty tracked now, but still good fun.
snowcrazy, TBF, I only posted what we'd heard from several sources after asking advice, including locals and instructors we know personally.

Great lines still to be found off front of Aiguille Rouge and Claire Blanc asallanm says. Had a great lunch @ Arpette yesterday. The lady who owned le Solliet until Nobember is now at the Arpette. Had a very mediocre meal @ Solliet Sunday. Currently @ GVA where it is snowing/alerting heavily.

Mountain Haddock, Had lunch in the Arpette today, was fine.. efficient and 'relatively cheap'.
Had a quiet day today, started snowing about 3PM this afternoon, have a few centimetres already and forecast to continue all night. Hopefully off-piste with guide tomorrow, so would be nice if it stopped at 9:15AM

What a day it turned out to be. Thought we would be going to the forest in Mont Albert and ended up on Bellecote. Great snow and few people but could not hang about as the weather front arrived early afternoon. Lots of tracks there but still room to put down fresh lines and now it is snowing outside so another powder day tomorrow. Should be good.

allanm, To your defence on the snowpack stablity the bulletins are now reporting 150cm fractures (whole snowpack) above 2800 meters.
This is prob what they are talking about. On monday a large slide pulled the whole snowpack starting with a 20 cm fracture. Im guessing this was what prompted the locals to mention this.
After a scary event on a wind slab BELOW cachette last week, Im paying a lot more attention to the bulletins when I come out next week.
Had another "whoomph" on saturday when crossing a relativity flat area above vallandry (allanm, You may remember when sam fell over) wasnt steep, so wouldnt slide, but just shows there is an odd layer in the pack.
Be careful.

tuxpoo, allanm, I just spoke to my young snowshepherd (son), he got into a slip today not far from the transarc managed to stay on his feet and get out of it. He's just got a good telling off from me as he knows better. It sounds like the nice blue sky is having an effect after new snow last night? or is it just lee slope slipage? can anyone confirm

livetoski, tuxpoo, Et All After all said and done went off piste with a guide today, Did the 'Par Avalanche' in the afternoon. It's a couple of small hikes up from the Launchettes lift out of 2K, then all the way down to Villaroger, in deep powder, many fresh tracks on the way down. My initiation to 'real' off-piste... and I struggled, but brilliant.
Didn't know at the time, but apparantly the guide's (Philippe from Arc Adventure) best mate died on this run, although not sure when..
Edited to correct a typo.

thefatcontroller, The rest of the group went off the back of the AR down to V in the morning, but the guide took us down some 'slightly' off-piste on the way to 'weigh me' up. In no uncertain terms he said that the route they were taking was [totally] unsuitable pour moi, as a first 'real' time off-piste. So dipped out of that. TFFT, apparently the morning was much harder than PM - which I obviously survived.

Today, after the fresh snow yesterday afternoon and evening, it was fresh tracks all the way. Did some real milage today. Up to Bellecote on the La Plagne side again then down to Champagny de Haute. Untracked almost the whole way. Then up Bellecote again and along the Friolin ridge and down into the bowl via an alternate route. Fresh tracks again and not to hard back to the baiches chair. Up over the top and down through the forest to the Van Express and home. Quite a day and more miles than I care to work out.
Tomorrow promises to be more of the same with blue skies forcast and powder everywhere still.
The pistes on the way over to la plagne were great but getting icy in many places going down to VE. The pistes over in la plagne were good, but coming back to the VE was starting to get icy in the busy places.
With the fresh snow those coming out this weekend are in for a treat. Powder, good pistes and blue sky some of the time.

Blue sky day today. The piste is firm, but not overly hard (luckily ) - the sun today on the top surface had it skiing really well. There is the very odd patch on the well skied blues that is a little hard and shiney, but on the whole it was skiing really well. We are promised a little new snow over the weekend which certainly won't do any harm. We saw a lot of the local area around Arc 1800 and just dropped into Arc 2000 - Taking the blue off the top of the second Arpette - lift for a short time and conditions were pretty uniform over that sort of area. Hoping to go further afield, maybe over to La Plagne on the VE tomorrow.

charlie26, depends which day but about 2hrs on a good day i guess. Would be interested to hear how fast you do it.
WesTaylor, it all depends how much time she likes to shop 15 min on bus both ways 10 min on funi each way plus waiting arounbd time. Walking to superU. Altogether 1hr 45 to 2hrs I would guess in travel plus shopping time.

Another great day in the sun. Blue sky and fresh powder. There is still untracked powder to be found if you search a little harder. The snow conditions today are still great. On north or north west facing slopes out of the sun and wind the snow has stayed fresh and light due to the cold temps. The pistes are in great condition higher up but we did find some icy patches going into resorts later in the day. The snow depth is about 1m in many off piste places. We found this out first hand today. Not a lot of fun digging for a ski. I would advise powder traces if you go of piste. They save a lot of time. But it was interesting to see how the snow has started to bond with older layers and get up close to it, just like digging a snow trench. Tomorrow it should be more of the same and then MAYBE a bit of snow on sunday/monday but people are not to sure right now. For those driving out you should have an easy trip as the roads up to resort are clear of snow right now.

Went skiing up Bellecote off piste yesterday with an excellent guide. It was a tremendous day, the snow was in excellent condition, a lot of untouched powder, and pretty deep. We had two big runs, the first one up the old traverse chair, then skied down to "Le Chalet de Bellecote" chair, to warm up, off piste most of he way. That was good, but better to follow!
We went back up the old bubble from the mid station (When are they going to replace it, it must be 40 years old?) to the top of Bellecote. This time we traversed across just below the Couloir des Canadians and into a superb gully which gradually widened out as we progressed towards Les Lanches village in the valley of the Ponthurin river, the one which flows down below the "flying handbag".Our group of five was good, we didn't have one wipe-out till near the bottom, when a young lass from Newcastle finally crashed, with exhaustion, I suspect, on the lower slopes. No lost skis, either, Snowcrazy! When we got to the bottom, we caught the free navette back to Peisey village, then back up the hill on the "lobsterpots".
It was exhilarating stuff, one of the best days of my life, but hard work. When I got back to Peisey, I collapsed in le Solan, and had a few beers with Christophe, with a contented smile on my face. What a day!

bertie bassett, We had a lesson the week after the avalanche and our instructor had been involved in the rescue. He said the reason there was so much so snow was that the bottom was a gully and while normally an avalanche would spread out at its 'end' in this case it all just collapsed into a pit with nowhere to go. He said the depths were incredible and the whole thing was horrible to deal with.

Yes indeed, had I known this beforehand I may not have done it, especially given my ability, but survived
Had an off-piste lesson with Geslain from ESF (Vallandry) , did some homework the other day, and he was mentioned a few times. His english wasn't brilliant, but lesson was excellent. Amazing how these guys find untouched powder yards from lifts!! He is one I'd definately recommend. Best instructor at Vallandry (M. Bernard) does not arrive until February.
Spent the afternoon with two excellent skiers, best runs were off the back of the Derby, left at the top and a bit of a traverse, quite steep and lovely powder, getting worse though as you decend through the woods to the Maitaz, the 'Rat Run' is totally skied out.
Quite nice though, was off the top of the Derby, look 'forward right' as you get off the lift and stay as high as you can. There is a bowl, which, if you can keep speed up, you can dip into and up the leave fresh tracks on the other 'downhill' side.... easily seen from the Vallandry lift. Magic.

Fair influx today after a deserted Saturday, but still very quiet... Comborciere was pisted last night, was both amusing and quite frightening watching people snowplough into each other from the lift. Not sure if the theory of pisting difficult runs on a Saturday is correct. If they left them alone then perhaps people wouldn't attempt them.. 'M' is still great but you need to be a little more adventurous...
Snow is holding out pretty well generally but we could do with a topup, locals are pesimistic about anything tonight. Runs into Vallandry both early morning and later on in the afternoon were pretty hardpacked and scratchy in places.
Having said that there is still great snow, you just need to think of where to go according to the time of day.

Late start today, looked awful out the window.. lightly snowing, drifting fog. Made straight for the Grand Col hoping to get above the mess. What a result! Very quiet, I think most people made striaght for the Vallandry Trees, instead of going high. Many Transarc bubbles going up empty. Everything off the Grand Col was brilliant, lovely snow - freshened a little overnight, and in glorious sunshine. Played up there for a while and skied back, possible in the worst 'flat light' I have ever encountered. Although you could see people, you couldn't see the snow under your feet. Several times hit bumps and ledges completly unaware that they were there - really a 'bend ze knees' and hope!
Cracking few hours though!!

Monday report from the on-piste group: What a pity that you seem to rarely get the snow and decent vis. all at the same time. The resort certainly got a passably useful dump (5cm or so) of powder this morning.
Back out this afternoon and went up Vagere to take the kids to the park - what a mistake. We found the same dead vis and fog that allanm, described. Following a short trip to a bar the vis got a bit better but the snow on the Belvedere tracks back down towards Chantel were becoming scoured.

Megamum, it sure did not seem like even 5cm by the time i went home. I will be interested to see what the official depth of new snow is by tomorrow morning. If anyone is online tonight. Is it still snowing now?

Decided to go to Montalbert yesterday afternoon, via the Flying Handbag, not quite a "Challenge", more an adventure in the mist. At the top of Sella chair, coming out of the Montchavin sector, actually got lost, it was so foggy! I had to sidestep back up to the piste for about 50 metres, I could just see some vague shapes in the gloom. Anyway, finally got to Belleplagne, and I was OK then! Took the Colosses drag and zoomed down to Plagne 1800, then up and over to "Montybear".
It was great in the trees going down, much better than on the tops, at least I could see where I was!
After a hot chocolate, the return journey was much better, I enjoyed the new fast chair, La Bergerie, out of Plagne Centre, it makes a big difference, but still had to pole a little to find it!
The rest of the journey was quite uneventful, even though the big Arpette 8 pack was mysteriously silent, carving through the thick mist back to Montchavin.
