Frankly, it'll make little difference to me if holidays do go up, I invested a decent chunk into cryptocurrency which has more than tripled in the last couple of months with profits to pay for several weeks skiing. I see a trip to the states on the horizon next year.....quite happy not to spend in Europe unless they show fairness during the coming negotiations.

That's OK Claude, don't worry about your grasp of English, ultimately it'll be the money that'll do the talking anyway, as in most negotiations.

Quite probably a result of how I do my shopping but if anything the basic cost of hitting the hills, apart from NA, has come down. Fair to say though I'm not automatically tied in the the French 'top brands'.
Slightly different case when you get there, but a small price to pay, in the grand scheme of things.

If you reduce a negotiation to its common denominator, then often when you look at some so called negotiations it is clear that there is no negotiation. It becomes a parade, a facade, a confusion, which serves to hide the fact that there is no negotiation.
If you consider the UK's exit from EU, you have to reduce it to its common denominator. Then you build up from there.
The EU wish to link free movement of people with free trade as an initial negotiation stance, but that is not the common denominator.
You start from nothing, no movement, no trade, and you negotiate from there. No deal is no deal, a better deal for both sides can definately be achieved from this common denominator. (although some in the EU might prefer no deal)
The exchange rate will return to 1.5, to 1.6 to US $ in 5 years, and within the same timescale we will see 1.3 Euros to £1. Whether there is a deal or not!

Technically access to free trade in the EU is linked to free movement of people (a core part of the Treaty of Rome and the reason we joined (what has become) the EU) and it's the UK that want to unlink them as a negotiation stance.

Shame the (Euro) balance for my summer holiday's going to fall due next week, not in 5 years Currently at 1:1.129, a 6-month low.

I believe that the levers of power britannic will shortly be passed to some of your fellow islanders - might they perhaps provide a remedy for the decline of sterling? Thoughts, oh wise one?

It is good if you have Euros and you want to move back to the UK. If you have pounds and you want to leave the UK, it is not so good. It depends on your point of view. My guess is that more pounds want to leave the UK than Euros want to come to the UK at the moment. However, when the bulk of those pounds leave, there will be less pounds wanting to leave and a Euro crisis will see Euros wanting to move to the UK.

Yup...it's starting to strengthen....maybe because of the murmurings of a cross-party Brexit team and the disintegration of Hard Brexit.

Handy for the tourists you pick up in your taxi who haven't got any Euros I guess

Hi @stanton, Unless you earn money, paid in Swiss Francs, Euro's and US Dollars then I suggest you either have zero balances on your foreign currency accounts or you are indeed exchanging money (unless you have a labour party style money tree!)

Usual cup half empty from @Stanton,
Calculate 5% of £1000, then calculate 5% of £1100.
Tell me again, why is it not good news?

I can do the sums...but afraid you've lost me on this one. How is lower value of £ good news if I want to ski in Europe?

@intermediate, he said it wasn't good news for uk tour operators. I am suggesting it has just increased their turnover in GBP.

@Strax, only if the increased prices don't mean a lot fewer people go skiing

Strong Euro weak Pound
Higher operating costs
Tour/Chalet companys pay their bills in Euros.

@stanton, if 1000's of people don't care enough to buy currency online and get it at airports with a 15-20% hit, then a drop from 113 to 110 is not going to make a difference at all.
As for buying packages. If I was a tour operator I'd be trading all these European hotels against each other.
You see, if so few people are going to go abroad due to your Armageddon hypothesis then these hotels will be 5h1tting themselves and will do anything to get the business and will drop their pants in prices.
Off course....... none of this will happen.
Cheers
GC
