Why?
What's so interesting about it?

@lambert, ah yes, the cider delivery. We do follow Ben's progress. Hope you have a good time in Serre Chevalier. Big snow flakes an hour ago when I was walking the dog, but wet snow, and just on the snow/rain border right now.

I was in Morzine exactly a year ago, and it was pretty much identical conditions. Had to go up to Avoriaz to find the snow. Don't think there was anything at resort level in Les Gets either.

@aceandy79, we got back to Les Gets last year around 5th January and had friends to stay quite soon after that and we were skiing Mt Chery the day after the Charlie Ebdo massacre and we stood in silence above the Grande Ourse when all the lifts stopped. The snow was certainly on the thinnish side but the four of us and the other four people we probably saw all day made a decent day of it. We did manage to get to the Atray Creperie the next day, dripping wet, and agreed that we had only gone there because the friends were staying and we enjoy it there. But those lifts down there are not running at the moment.

I know that I rather provocatively, nay almost trollishly, suggested that the idea of snow in Morzine was just a rumour put about by the tourist office, but in all seriousness how much of the season / how often would you actually expect to see snow in the village? Others will know far better than me, but I wouldn't have expected anything close to continuous snow cover throughout the season, so surely no snow in mid-Jan is highly likely, as is no snow in mid-Feb, mid-March, or whatever. It just depends when it last snowed. Of course, you'd expect the artificial snow on the pistes to be a bit more permanent. Maybe that was what you meant.

Been skiing in Pre La Joux all day. Conditions up the top are decent (if a little windy right at the very top).
Quite a bit warmer and slushy pistes at the bottom (and raining), but I have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of snow at the bottom. Hardly any brown/green patches anywhere.

Managed a couple of hours in Avoriaz yesterday and thought conditions were actually pretty good.
Skied Morzine/Les Gets today, mainly as we have some beginners in the group so being friendly and not the best conditions ever but perfectly skiable - once you got above the freeze line, which hovered around the top of the Pleney most of the day. Weird mix of snow though with patches of fast, older snow and very slow, stickie fresh stuff.
Back to Avoriaz tomorrow I think...

@foxtrotzulu, you live under bridges, eat billy goats and I claim my €10.
Srsly, Morzine really is often snow covered. It often rains in December and March but it snows sufficiently in town that a recent Maire instituted a lunatic "trottoirs blanches" policy for ambience.

Hey guys, 1st post. Cheers for the in-depth reports over the last few weeks. Been lurking like hell as we fly out Saturday. We've a full PDS pass, so I guess it'll be Avoriaz/Chatel for most of the week. All being well the snow this week will help things.
We're hoping to get a car for the week and look at a few properties while we're there. I believe some of you live in and around Morzine and was hoping for some advice and direction on villages near by that aren't ridiculously expensive to buy in. Thanks in advance for the help.

Billy goats are yummy! I wasn't seriously disputing the fact that it OFTEN snows in Morzine, but I was questioning what % of the season there is snow lying in the village. Up the hill you'd expect snow that falls in Jan to remain pretty much until mid-March but down in Morzine I rather presume that it comes and goes throughout the season.

@foxtrotzulu,
Nope. In a normal season mid Dec to Mid March is common. I've seen mid Nov to mid Apr too, continuously. On occasion it never really stays for long, perhaps this year.
I think in a normal season the, pretty much, total snow making cover has made a big difference on Pleney.

I just wanted to know when it opened really.
Kinda get where your coming from, last year snow parks didn't register at all for me and I skied past them. I'd happily answer the question, if it isn't rhetorical.
I personally don't get all the threads that are cluttered with people completely shocked that other people have different interests to their own. Some threads make for painful reading, "Can't believe you like that resort, time of year, airport, route to the resort, restaurant, etc etc etc." For me I want people to go and do pretty much whatever they want (as long as they don't crash into me). If you like off piste great, if you like nursery slopes great, you hate snow parks I'm happy for you, like chocolate box ski resorts fine, modern high rise resorts all good. I like coming on here to find out more about places and the options so that I can choose the right holiday for me, and maybe waste a little less time when I get there. It's a big mountain and there are plenty of ways to get down it. Have fun people, because no matter how many times I go skiing it never really seems to last long enough.

@Fourstar, well said. I don't when you're going or where you're staying but I would encourage you to visit the Swiss side. I won't say more because this is the weather thread, but try posting on the PdS not-the-weather thread in the Piste section.

@Fourstar, If the stash isn't open, the natural side hits down prolays are always worth a visit.. You can loop it really easily from the lindarets bowl and there are loads of tree lined runs accessible from the same lifts if there is enough of the white stuff. That area will get tracked out quickly in the mornings, so get up early to get the best of it.. (check the vid I posted on page 16)

I was just curious @Fourstar why a very small part of the area was a main draw for you.
I've never heard anyone say that El Stasheroony was the big attraction.

Interesting day today, with most lifts closed in Avoriaz due to wind (or at least that's what we were being told down in Morzine, with both the Super Morzine and bus to Prodains stopped). Thankfully the Pleney was running and we were able to get some amazing runs up and down piste D/Mouilles. Snow in perfect condition and only about 3 tracks down it when we did our first run.
Lifts, including the Pleney gondola started stopping on the Morzine side around 11 leading to discussions of just how DO you get down from the top of the Pleney when it's not running and you can't ski down. Walk apparently! Thankfully we stopped being stupid and remembered you can ski over to Les Gets and get the bus - but the wind dropped and things resumed around 12.
Snowing/hailing off and on all morning but actually some hazy sun in the afternoon around La Rosta with all forecasts suggesting lots of snow on the way tomorrow - with some worryingly high winds...

Nice to hear something so positive being made out of a not so good day. It certainly did blow around 11 with horizontal hail onto our windows at the same time. Let's hope for something better tomorrow.

Loads of lift closures in Chatel today, in fact the Pierre Longue was the only chair open in Plaine Dranse. Did a few laps of the red and green runs, and then headed over to Super Chatel played around there for a bit on the button lifts.

Agreed. Don't listen to these grumpy old codgers. The Stash is great fun - a nice tree run, with big terrain features built from wood for you to mess around on. Lots of little trails off into the woods at either side to explore, and lots of amusement to be had falling off things, and watching other people fall off things.
Honestly, I sometimes think this forum is half populated by grumpy old bachelors in their mid 70s. Skiing is for everyone, not just the pitiably middle-of-the-road.

Thanks for that, good advice, any thoughts restaurants, pistes, or anything else I should try? Thinking of heading over the Swiss pistes but don't know the area. |
You're welcome! Restaurants, bars I don't (unfortunately ) spend enough time up there any more to keep up.
Runs, it depends on your level and what floats-your-boat; but it's a shame to come to the PdS and not do the "Circuit PDS" which takes you through all the linked french&swiss villages as you circumnavigate the dividing range. Also smaller loops exist to visit Morzine, Les Gets and Mont Chery, or Chatel, Torgon & Abondance if you're over that way. The PdS is rather haphazardly signposted, the full PdS lift map does have a pretty good diagram of how the links between villages work.

@Fourstar, based in Avoriaz you can get pretty much everywhere. The only part that is a bit of a stretch is Torgon/La Chapelle and the three non-connected bits - St Jean d’Aulps, Abondonace and La Chapelle Cret Beni.
Early start and over to Lindarets, Plain Dranse, Linga, Super Chatel, Morgins, Champoussin, Les Crosets and back to Lindarets is very doable in a day. Just watch for the conditions to get down to Morgins that is often a bit sketchy. Morzine/Les Gets in easy reach and plenty on your doorstep. Certainly best to avoid ending up on the Swiss isde when the lifts close - it could be 70km by road to get you back the 5km to your apartment as the crow flies!
There is a PDS restaurant thread somewhere. Beer, burgers and fries – Changabang opposite the Prodains lift arrival.

@Harry Flashman, i'd argue the " stash" was more fun before they added the preposterous wooden features (that even the pisteurs admit are nigh on unrideable).
But i'm approaching a certain age. And grumpy.
I would strngly argue, however, not middle of the road

Fair point, hopefully it won't be busy. Other than Flachau, it's the only one in Europe, and looks more varied than the usual snow parks. There's also a range of things you can do from beginner to expert, where as most parks are too hard to progress in as they are a bit all or nothing. I was looking for something like this for a while and couldn't believe it existed. It has other features rather than just rails or kickers so I'm looking forward to trying to improve. Got almost two months so should be open.

The heavy showers of snow today didn't last long, with mainly light snow at the top of Pleney. As Mjit said earlier, piste b was is excellent condition with a nice layer of fresh snow building up. Nyon sector was closed, and lady at ticket office did her best to try to put me offf going up the mountain at all but the wind wasn't too bad and skiing was quite pleasant.
Snowing in Morzine when i went out for a drink around 5.30 but still quite wet. Hopefully we get some useful snowful overnight.
