Had a good day of skiing above Courchevel 1850, didn't come across many icy patches though some of the pistes were somewhat hard packed.
Any tips on decent affordable mountain restaurants? Went to the restaurant at Verdons yesterday, food was ok but not amazing. Dropped down to 1550 for lunch today which was much better (went to L'epicerie).

@calbris, it really was just the very occassional small patches of ice. I saw maybe, two patches, all day in VT/LM.

Lauze run PIC bleu - closed but excellent
|
Please take care: when that run and Bd de Loze are closed it is usually due to the avalanche risk from the slopes above coming on to the pistes.

Just back from 4 days in les menuires as guests of the excellent hotel les bruyeres. A 20cm chute de niege on Friday night meant that conditions were ok and cold temps ensured that they stayed that way.
Pistes are 6/10 I would say. Busy runs get very scraped and slick - patches of bona fide water ice are dotted here and there and mountain flora pokes through the snow on many lower runs.
That said, there's lots of good skiing on the sheltered and/or low traffic areas. As noted elsewhere, the upper runs in val thorens and la masse were among the worst having been very badly effected by the wind. We found the best skiing on the east facing slopes above meribel village and over in courchevel 1650
N.B. The ever-unreliable Mont de la chambre chairlift was closed all 4 days and looks to have finally popped its clogs

Having spent the last couple of months on the View from the Espace Killy for our January week, I now switch over to here for our Easter week in La Tania! Keep up pics and posting folks, looking forward to getting updates. With 2 little ones in tow though and childcare, I think we'll only be doing the Courchevel valley, hopefully that'll keep us busy for the week.

@red 27,
Your comment about the conditions in 3-V have to be placed in the context of this season. We have had the best 4 days since the beginning of the season!

And if snow-forecast were to be believed which it shouldn't because
A. It's snow-forecast
And
B. It's still nine days out so in proper FI
The first week in Feb could!!!! be special.

@123_456, Yes indeed, everyone we spoke to in Les M was keen to remind us of our luck.
What can you do - The sun shines on the righteous
It's also worth mentioning the superb food and service we had in all the restaurants in Les M during the holiday. Those who say the French mega-resorts are rude/expensive etc really are talking out of their derrières

@compostcorner, that is looking at the slopes above Meribel, it's probably taken from the Col de Loze above La Tania. You can just about see the slope they use for slalom races down to the Chaudanne. The ridge in the middle of the picture is the one that separates the Meribel valley from the Belleville valley.

I reckon it was taken above Meribel, looking across to the other side of the Meribel valley. Maybe taken from Chamois or Maudit. In the middle of the view is the Plan de l'Homme chair with the black Bosses coming down on the right, and the blue Roc de Fer further to the right. All easily accessible from La Tania over the Col de la Loze.
If you head over the ridge in the distance in the picture you head down to Les Menuires or to St Martin - lovely long runs.
From Courchevel and La Tania itself you actually look across to La Plagne resort - or the nearest part of it above Champagny.
Have a great time in 3V!

@Patch, thanks for that. We're out tomorrow so nice to know there is some decent snow. By quiet do you mean lack of people?

Conditions very variable across the 3V and vary from day to day. We arrived last Tuesday and although the snow is much better than when we were here at Christmas its not great. We have found some nice runs but also lots of hard, scraped and icy areas.
Set off this morning from Meribel and the top of Tougnette and Lagoped were great - had been pisted and was just softening up. Headed over to ValT where we found good snow low down but the Orelle valley was dreadful - winds like in Scotland, temp of -12 C and windblown ice. Very variable conditions.
It started snowing about 5pm and its still coming down so tomorrow should be much better.
Off to Switzerland on Monday, then Italy the following week. Will update on conditions there.

Around 5-10cm of snow last night, but piste still very scratchy in many places. Still very cold, and while sun was forecast to break through, it hasn't yet. We're still seeing lots of snow on the forecast towards the end of the week.

Conditions are good. There is some grass in places, and what looks like mud picked up by the piste bashers. It's also quite icy in places. Skied Courchevel this morning. Really quiet and I think we were the first on some runs as late as 10.30! The sidecountry was quite tracked but not patchy. Found some good moguls. Meribel in the afternoon was much icier and patchy but its only in comparison.
There seems to have been light snow falling since Sunday and it's made a contribution.

Had an awesome day in Courchevel. Off piste is good with care. There are rocks just below the surface in places but also grass/shrubbery as a warning. Found some really good powder underneath the couloirs and in the bowl.
Weather was variable. Snowing first thing, then sunny around 9.30 in 1850. Cloudy in 1650 mid morning then low light back in 1850. Sunny/ clear in the afternoon but mixture of snow and ice on the piste.
Tomorrow is due to be good. We're going area wide. Then the promise of a metre of snow on Thursday will turn everything into powder!

Update: One of the Pow Puppies is down. Live by the Pow, die by the Pow.
Remaining Puppies are off the leash.
Shredded off the back of La Masse - crusty top, bouncy body. Sadly all skied up now. Skied into a brook. Walked it out (had to Christian Bale).
10cm forecast tonight by SF - what do those guys know?! Nothing yet in LT, but the night remains.
Next update due tomorrow
Pow Puppies out. Oooooowwwwwoooooohhhhhhh x

Today's update from Chairman Pow:
Big dawg's back on his fatties. Puppies reunited.
A Bostick dump over night and into the day... Sticky. But in the season of the dry, the sticky dump is king (nice). It snows still at 1400. Found pow with some spirit en route to La Praz, as previously, now slug trailled.
Weathered French folk warning of up to 1m overnight and delayed lift openings in the morning. Thankfully the Puppies have contacts: we'll be catting up at dawn.
Keep safe, keep deep
