Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The normally accurate Chamonix Meteo forecasts about 25cm over the next 2 days for that NW alps area, so better than nothing if not exactly epic

On the plus side, next week now forecast to be less cold and quite unsettled so we may get some worthwhile top-ups (admin - could you arrange a fingers crossed smiley please, ta)

Bit disappointed as it doesn't seem to be snowing in Val Thorens. In fact people seem to be injuring the sunshine.

Let's hope so. I've been looking at the webcam every 5 minutes or so whilst I should have been working and the clouds just seem to come and go without dropping any of this white stuff.

Panic over looks like it is just starting to snow at Val Thorens.

nozawaonsen, Is the weather rolling down from the North as it has been snowing in Chamonix for quite a while and only just starting to snow lightly in Val thorens??

emwmarine, it's actually being scooped up from the south initially then pushed in from the east as a low pressure system moves across the Mediterranean. Hence why the Italian side of French/Italian border could really benefit. But I'm confident you will have plenty to play in in Val Thorens. Temperatures do look pretty cold from the end of this week. Here's the Arlberg ensembles as an example.

They are projecting some very cold temps in Zermatt. Somewhere in the neighborhood of -18C! Shocked Holy frozen popsicles, Batman. That is chilly! Makes for good snow making though! Kind of bummed that I can't see anything on the webcams though. Was hoping the Zermatt Bahnhof webcam would be showing snow on the ground. Guess the cold temps haven't quite hit yet?

Us Yanks who are fortunate to be domiciled in the PNW will be getting a lot less snow this week than the Alps, but still snow forecast to start falling in the Cascades Wednesday evening, off and on through the weekend. Just stay cold, pretty please! Will be getting in some turns this weekend to practice for Zermatt.

Also, through a break in the cloud from my office window I reckon the snow settled on ground down to about 750m last night round here. There are a few fields that lie only just above Annecy that look like you could just about go sledging on them!

benpudney, I've not seen ensembles for the US. Slightly slow start out there at the moment, but plenty of time for that to change!

But as boofit, suggests http://www.utahskiweather.com/ is a good site.

"Conditions at the resorts are variable. Hard packed snow on the groomers in the mornings with icy areas in the high traffic zones. Cooler temperatures are keeping things from softening up throughout the day on all but the sunniest aspects. Some pockets of powder can still be found on the north facing slopes.

...Just remember that the snowpack is still VERY thin and there will be lots of rocks, trees, stumps, bushes, and snow snakes hiding just under the surface. If you do head off trail do so with caution and try to avoid a season ending injury before the season has a chance to get started!..."

Dumping it down in the Aosta Valley - more in the easterly resorts (Cervinia, Monte Rosa area) than the western ones (Courmayeur and La Thuile) whilst in between at Pila (opening Saturday) the only webcam on which much is visible shows a snow cannon gradually being covered...Happy At my level big wet flakes, and laying on the meadows 100/200m up from the valley bottom (550m c.).

To get a regional overview: http://www.lovevda.it/turismo/prima_di_partire/in_tempo_reale/webcam_i.asp

Some of those webcams showed no snow at all this morning - not that I've been checking, or anything....

fluter, yes as expected the Swiss Italian border has really been getting the Lion's share.

Here is SLF from yesterday evening (they've just updated the layout of their avalanche warnings incidentally New format for avalanche bulletin - rather good I think).

"Fresh snow

The snowfall level in northern regions will be at 800 to 1200 m. In southern regions it will be at 1800 to 2200 m to begin with, then drop during the course of the day down to 1400 to 1800 m. Between Tuesday midday and Wednesday evening, the following amounts of snowfall are anticipated:

From Monte Rosa over the Simplon region into the Bedretto, Maggia valleys: 100 - 160 cm
remaining Main Alpine Ridge as well as remaining regions southwards therefrom excluding Lower Engadine; Upper Valais, Urner Alps: 50 - 100 cm
remaining Valais, western and central parts of northern flank of the Alps, Glarner Alps, western part of Central Grisons: 30 - 50 cm
remaining regions: maximum 15 cm

Thursday

Widespread snowfall is anticipated down to low altitudes. The wind will shift to northwesterly. The avalanche danger is expected to increase in northern regions and diminish somewhat in southern regions.

Friday

A small amount of snowfall is expected to fall in the far eastern regions during the night, it will then turn partly sunny in all regions of Switzerland over the course of the day. It will remain cold. The avalanche danger will decrease."

As I mentioned to emwmarine a few posts above the weather direction will switch to coming from the east. Run the animation below from 1500 to 2100

and you'll see it piling up against the Piedmont side of the Alps spilling across to the French side.

The snow's reached Austria/Innsbruck, was really cool to watch the clouds roll in from the South - guess the Italians didn't steal all the snow, though we'll have to wait to see how much is left. Looked pretty dark over in Stubaital, and started snowing on Nordkette around 4pm. Pics in the Innsbruck/Tirol thread.

SLF's evening update for Switzerland.

Temperatures dropping quite steeply in the Alps from tomorrow, Saturday morning could be very chilly.

Clearer weather on Friday and perhaps Saturday too.

Snow showers in parts on Sunday, before more substantial snow looks like it could push across again on Tuesday and Wednesday (04/05 December) along with Krampus!

Temperatures consistently below average for at least the next week.

rob@rar, yes though I must admit that I'm not really clear what it refers to given it covers a week long period.

12z GFS is another cold run with temperatures in the Alps below average for the length of the run (out to mid December).

The second week was warmer than average for Scotland, but this didn't enjoy much support from the ensembles.

18z had some very cold and snowy weather in FI for the second week of December.

Anyone fancy -34C in the Arlberg in a week's time?

Obviously that's up a mountain before sunrise and I wouldn't necessarily expect it to actually turn out like that, but it does suggest some chilly weather on the way.
