Just got back from week learning to ski in Niederau. Hardly any snow falling at resort level after monday, although fresh snow at top.
Nursery slopes treacherous (ice) in morning turning to slush in afternoon.
Instructors took us to top 2 days early and even kids were on red23 by thursday.
Had a great week, but Im glad we arent going this week as forecast is v poor.

bryan6, thank you for the report, and welcome to SnowHeads!
This week does not look that bad in Austria. No snow is predicted for the next days, but the temps is around zero above 1000m.
Austria was split again. Sat and Sun the Western parts (Vorarlberg, Tirol, Salzbug) got the plus and the Southern-Eastern part (Karntnen) got the minus temps again.

Saturday morning so I'll be on the slopes Sunday.
You're right, the forecasts aren't commiting themselves.
I'd be more worried if there was too much snow and the beer lorry couldn't get through.

bob sleigh, Just got back from Soll (Sunday 18th), the skiing is good over 1000m, the nursery slope in Soll is looking very sad, the blue back to Soll was closed
and looks as it will remain so. The red under the Gondola was open and looked good.
If you know Soll, Ski the Rigi side in the morning, and the Siller (51) side in the afternoon.
Chairlift 7 (6 seater) is one of those best kept secrets, as the run down does not connect to anything other than the 7 back up, it is only used as a lift up, so skiing down is very good (Well it used to be ), its is a rollercoaster red/blue, allows for good improvement from beginner to intermediate, getting used to speed knowing the uphill will slow you down naturally.
Ps. The Rigi restuarant is one of the best, its new clean, very modern, a slide down to the toilets Tip if busy there is sitting upstairs that people miss.

Not really any black runs to speak of, the one off the top of the Hohe Salve, is very short. I have seen an instructor take snowploughing kids down so
scary I think not. But there are other in the Ski Welt.
The challenge is to get to the Hart Kaiser top of the Funicular Railway, it is a great day's skiing and the restuarant at the Hart Kaiser ain't bad.
Escalators to the bogs this time
Nice blues through the trees on the way there cutting across pistes, on the way back plenty of skiing, so don't get to pissed lunch time.
Have a great time.

saalbach so good went two years running. the run down from the shat express mid station was my first ever steep icy black; didn't fall once but it took me ages to get down - steeper than some of the expert runs in canada

Charlatanefc, Soll is a small town compared to Saalbach/Hinterglemm and Zell am See, I think you would have done all the bars in a matter of hours
The snow was just as good as Zell, not as good as Saalbach though. The runs in Soll are probably the same if not better then Saalbach, Zell was a bit more limited
but they were long.
The Private B&B was very good with Ensuite Shower & WC, for 25 euros per night/per person, funny thing I was in the Shower and noticed the sink
was cracked, I was very careful the rest of the week not to touch it
My daugthers birthday the landlady got her accordian out and played happy birthday, then kept on playing aargh........................... We would come back from skiing and she would be practicing, crept in just incase she wanted to show us the other 1000 austria accordian songs she knew
Great trip for half term, very reasonable, we took the snowcoach.co.uk they dropped us off in Soll, Skis were prebooked via Worldski.co.uk (who use SkiSet, but they were cheaper them then). Left Friday @ 11:00am got there 09:00 Saturday so avoided the scramble for ski hire, then on the next Saturday left at 18:00, so skied Saturday all day and avoided the scramble of ski hire return............
Unfortunately thats my last trip, EOSB 2007 is not possible due to work commitments

I am off to Kitz on the 17th March and lets face reality its looking extremely grim. A number of questions, would appreciate if anyone knows the answers?
What is the nearest Glacier or high altitude resort(s) to Kitz?
Any ideas of availability and cost of car hire?
I have bought and in receipt of vouchers for both ski school and lift pass for Kitz - what the usual procedure if there is no snow. Is it automatic refund in resort or lengthy battle with Tour operator when I get home?
Leaving aside the presumed nature of ongoing gloom of the above question, anyone any idea what are historical weather patterns in Kitz for mid march. I.e if the cover remains miserable up to March 1st is there any chance beyond some freak mathimatical one that there will be good cover for the resort to operate by the time I arrive?
Any answers will be appreciated!

2005 - 2006 seasonal weekly averages cms
March
Week 14 upper 126, lower 71 cms
Week 15 upper 154, lower 76
Week 16 upper 143, lower 68
Week 17 upper 121, lower 44
Copied this from skiclub, I can only get last season's as it's free, (not a member). Check your insurance with regard to unused vouchers etc, but some friends of ours that couldn't use some of their lift pass days due to high winds closing their resort down (Cervinia) just got some credits that they could use the next year!!!!

Here in Saalbach we're having a party!!!!!!!! But the snow is very poor. The tops have some reasonable cover and the pisteurs are doing an excellent job but it is so warm. We have spring conditions. Very heavy by 1.00 pm.

That's great so the next year you have to go back, high winds again (common in Cervinia I believe) and no skiing again!

Just returned from Europe, and I spend the 17th to the 19th skiing at the Ski Amade resorts.
Started the 17th at St. Johann-Alpendorf, where my friend and I skied over to Wagrain, then took the bus over to Flachau. The best conditions were at upper Wagrain, where the pistes held up well throughout the day. Flachau, especially, was slushy at the bottom, as was the return trail to Alpendorf come 4:00 pm. My friend is a resident of St. Johann who usually hikes for all of his turns (either before dawn or after working hours), though this year has been tough for him given the paucity of natural snow.
On the 18th, we went to Zauchensee (we hitched a ride from my friend's father), where the snow was markedly better and we were able to get in quite a few fun runs. The World Cup DH course is still rock-hard under the new snow that's fallen on hit, and all the traffic headed down its twists and turns had exposed the injected base. You can imagine the carnage that came from that: many more novice skiers finding their way into the A-nets. Having skied the DH piste, it's tough for me to fathom it for an Olympic course. Comparing it first-hand to the DH pistes at Snowbasin, Utah, the Zauchensee track is much, much more tame.
We eventually made our way to Flachauwinkl and Kleinarl (good snow up top, slushy as hell at the bottom, with some really brown snow at the base of Kleinarl), took the bus over to Wagrain (where we again enjoyed the upper pistes quite a bit), then back down to Alpendorf.
On Monday morning, I did a quick half-day at Alpendorf and Wagrain. The snow held up throughout, and endi early allowed my to truly enjoy the run back to Alpendorf better than its usual, Slurpee-esque afternoon consistency.
Overall, I really enjoyed my trip. I'll post photos to my Flickr page soon, which is linked from my blog at www.randomduck.com .

Kitzsteinhorn glacier next to Kaprun Fri 23rd and Sat 24th was great. Lots of snow, hardly any bare patches on piste, no ice to speak of. All runs open and the run back down to the top of Gletscherbahn 1 was good - not even slushy. Off piste was variable, windblown crust, small pockets of powder, but actually mostly tracked out and not too different from skiing on the steeper pistes. Quite crowded, as you'd expect, on Fri, partly as people were being bussed in from other lower resorts where it's limited or too slushy. On Sat there were shortish queues but bearable. I'd say though that because it's a relatively small area especially the main blue glacier runs at the top could feel a bit busy. Put it this way - I'm glad I didn't have my small kids with me. Also the weather was good, esp on Fri with blue skies and only a little breeze. On Sat it was a little cloudy but still lots of sun and with moderately strongish winds at the top. Great skiing was had.

Slightly fuller report from Samnaun /Ischgl as I am back and yesterday was my last days skiing.
I had seven days skiing the piste conditions were generally very good, largely due to excellent maintenance, there were occasional stones and icy or worn patches. The depths in Ischgl were not great and most of the ridges were heavily wind scoured and the runs to resort kept open by man made snow, pistes became very packed as the afternoon progressed as the resorts were very full for Fasching week. Off piste was only really possible in sheltered areas due to low depths on the Austrian side.
The Swiss side had greater depths with no stones or icy patches to speak off and reasonable depths of piste though warm temperatures during the day and freezing at night made for a hard or crusty surface in most of what I saw. If the new snow forecast arrives there should be more excellent skiing.

All the lifts are open in Zell am See, but snowdepths are way below-average.
It looks like snow up top and rain down low in ZaS for most of this week. Roughly 5 - 20cm of freshies have fallen today already in higher spots.
